Now, i know that given the choice to slip by a DD or attack it first, id evade it. But, Once detected and i start evading him, should i just try to wait until he goes away? Or should i come to periscope depth and try to put a fish into him? If i were to attack a DD who was coming after me whats the best way to do it? Which torpedo is best? (i currently stock up on IIs)

Also two more small questions, i am currently using a type VIIB boat, and i am very reluctant to trade it for anything else minus a XXI (which im basically saving up and waiting for) I am upgrading the sub as stuff becomes available, but is radar worth it? Because all it seems to do is give away your position so..
And also, how deep should i dive while Listening for ships on the hydrophone?

It depends on the realism you are playing on. On the more difficult levels it is much better to run deep and silent. Attacking an alert DD can be suicidal: doing so gives away your position, catches you near the surface, and it is almost impossible to hit a circling DD with anything but an acoustic fish. Focus on evading rather than attacking.

I would only attack a destroyer if I have to. If you're caught in shallow water and can't get away, it's a choice of killing it or dying, so you lose nothing by trying. If the destroyer is blocking your shot at an easy target, and the destroyer isn't alert, I might try sinking it to open up the approach to the real target. Other than that, I leave them alone and slip past.

If my watch crew spots a warship and we're in a pretty good position to attack (ahead of it, can easily get within 1000m while submerged) I'll do so.

If I need to make large changes to my current course and/or try to get ahead of it I evade.

Yes indeedy, it's a judgement call. I fthe convoy is only escorted by one or possibly 2 destroyers and I'm in a good position, I'll maybe try and take them out so i can rape the convoy with my deck-gun. Later in the war this is not an option since all ships are more heavily armed than you, and evasion is the key. You could try the old trick of sitting near the surface and attracting the attention of the escorts, and allow them to rip out their guts on your conning tower, which appears to be made of Unobtainium(tm). You take a bit of damage and you dont get the credit for the kill, but it is effective. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

In real life i know some u-boat captains had a number of successes, by launching an acoustic torpedo at an atacking destoyer using a stern tube before diving.

If you ask me it's always better to dive and hide, apart from when your in a situation when you cant like explained above.

During a Patrol in my VIIB in the Channel (at night), I ran into a DD. And I was in a daring mood that day, so I gave chase to him on the surface. I closed to 2000 yards and opened up on him with the Deck Gun, after four rounds I set off his DCs on deck and after another 3 sent him to the bottom. I got lucky once and I'm not trying that again... ever.

Gun battles with Hunt class destroyers are fun, most Destroyer Escorts/ Frigates are better armed than they are.

If it is a flower corvette or Hunt destroyer, surface at long range and pound him with the deck gun. If at closer range I recommend just evading. Many of the convoys I've run into lately have the escorts banging away with active sonar. My suggestion in that case is to go to flank speed, hit the tankers, crash dive as deep as you can and slip away. Then plot a course to interecept them again while you reload your torpedoes. Rinse and repeat till out of torpedoes. BTW, depth charge attacks are basically harmless at 100m or deeper as they can't hit anything that deep.
