View Full Version : 109 whingers, Spitfire aliens and P38 masochists

I'm wondering if planes somehow reflect their owners, or something.

I have always openly admired the 190 people, as their 'how to fly a 190 to the max' threads seem to outnumber their 'the 190 should be better than <insert plane name here>' and 'the 190 is unfairly undermodelled' threads by a healthy margin. Weird. It actually seems they are hell-bent on enjoying themselves flying their tricky aircraft. What's up?

Whereas 109 people spend their time holding p***ing contests with those Spitfire aliens (we all know only aliens fly UFOs), hauling out charts to 'prove' that theirs is the numero uno fighter in RL and thus should have a 30:1 kill ratio in the game, and endlessly debating those vital 2kph Oleg cheated them out of. Faustnik sums it up brilliantly here:
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?q=Y&a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=3691057192&p=2

Why are we so insecure? Get out there and blow stuff up! Mk108s rule! Yeah baby!

For fun, lets make some other generalisations.
P38 pilots = whingers and masochists (the latter, because their whinges have some valididty http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)
*P47 = patriotic American rednecks
*P39 = harmless but likeable oddballs
*P51 = hmmm. I was going to say, helpful, reasonably balanced folk... ...but wait - didn't SirRobin endorse this plane at one stage? 'Nuff said.
*bomber/attack pilots = everyone loves them online, but no-one actually wants to BE one themselves
*cr@plane advocates = hopeless idealists, rather like used-car salesmen for Mexican taxis. Have to admire them though.
*Soviet pilots = not much forum activity re: their planes. Probably quietly congratulating themselves on their planes and trying to pretend no-one sees that 'uber' La-7...

Ah, that felt good to get off my chest.
Anyone ese? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I put the good FW190 and P-38 pilots in the same sort of basket. The plane they fly is rewarding but difficult to get the most out of.

I like flying both...its fun. If you can shoot someone down in those, you can shoot them down in anything. And thats what I try to do. I keep an open mind, fly all types...feel pretty good about most of them.

Balrog, don't you find the "L337" thing gets old? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

And I'm not sure whether to take offense to "patriotic American rednecks", since most don't know what a "redneck" really is, and rednecks are not limited to America. I can find rednecks anywhere in the world. Heck, I've seen them here in Japan. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Be that as it may, 190 drivers have some excellent, verbose members, and I enjoy their posts. I go take a 190 for a spin just about every time Zen writes one of his treatise. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Seriously though, planes do match personalities imo.

I'm a Lightning jock, always have been, always will be. Why? Simple really, the way you fight in a lightning best accentuates my overall outlook on airial combat. Don't know why really, it just comes naturally to me. Probably because I'm patient, like to move and scoot, and get a BIG thrill out of mud moving. There are finer points in which it suits me, but I'm not going to get into a long discussion on it.

On the other side of the coin, I've never been able to fly the luft birds. It's not that they're german, it's just that their fighting styles are not "me". I don't really like most of the vvs stuff either. I've been playing il2 from a vvs point of view for awhile now (I liked it better than the luft), but really that was because the game was **** good for a pc flight sim. I know that I outright CAN'T fly the IJN, IJA stuff because it's just too foreign to me style wise.

I've been wanting to try out the 262 in combat, it might have been the exception to my luft rule, but I just can't. The engine noise makes me sick (literally) and I can't play the game with NO sound. Engine volume REALLY should have been adjustable....

Recently I played a full real Lightning Pacific anti-shipping campaign. Man, that's some intense stuff. It would've been better with more ships but I can't complain too much.

I would like your verdict on the I-16/Brewster fans. They seem to be an od, though vocal bunch. I count myself among them.

If they reflect their planes, they should be short, rounded and prone to fall out unders stress. Hey, that might be me!

I only agree with half the P-39 driver stereotype: we may be odd but we're the most underestimated of the flyers out there. Everybody thinks the Cobra is a bad plane but you have to just get to know it.

I sleep with mine, she has a name, sometimes late at night I like to softly whisper sweet nothings and secrets into her intakes while I gently caress her sweetly curved nose....

Oh, and I'd say anybody who flies the Zero has a deathwish - it's a dang BBQ! Everytime I get in one I make sure to bring a bag of marshmallows.

Megile - 109K? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif That's what I fly!
Ouch, the truth hurts. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

(Actually, that' s old news. Only weaklings use the 109K. I have recently switched to the 109Z ('the new best') so I can easily more easily transition to the Spit XIV when it comes out.)

I-16/Buffalo pilots ARE similar = oddballs, but not harmless. Bit more niggling and cocky. Will always fly as Rebel alliance in a SW sim. Have an ego, not a plane, to 'compensate' for other 'short... ...comings'.

Zero pilots = presume they're all over at PF, but I estimate they're yank-n-bankers of the risk-taking variety. Sort of like the I-16 'hahaha, I just turned inside you so you'll have to spend another 20min setting up that 'perfect BnZ')

I could write an essay on why 109 pilots are insecure, but one truly wonders why. It is a decent plane in all respects, although probably not 'the new best' in game or RL (heresy!)

Enjoy what we've got:
Speed = to contemporary enemies
Agility = decent. Can out-turn what u can't outrun
Climb = Apollo 13
Cockpit = we can see out of it (couldn't resist sticking that to the 190 people http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )
Firepower = good (except the 109F - urk!) and versatile (gunpods,anyone?)
One word: Mk108! = the airborne answer to the 88mm PaK. Why force a plane to disengage with miserable 50s when you could cut it in half, set the halves on fire, and p*** on the embers with 30mm goodness?) Ahhh, the 108 - what the Mg151 SHOULD have been http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

Cons =
elevator sucks (****, that's like RL!)
landing tricky
the gunsight is broken http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Btw, does any 109 people have Mk108 convergance that they prefer? As I am an excerable shot, "count the rivets on the cockpit hood then unload with everything" = my normal style. But I'd like to set 30mm and MGs to conicide - what settings would I need?

Hi,

Not all Zero pilots at PF - one here.

Not just yank and bank, either - she climbs like the wind.

Can't comment on the 109, I don't like it much. For me, it just sits in that middle ground of 'all rounder' which means it's not much good for anything http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Cheers,
Norris

I think it is silly to stero type people based on their plane LOL I fly the Hurri,I-16,and Yak-9(in all its iterations http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) I scoff at most 109 pilots,they are seem to spend more of their time finding ways to sell the virtues of their beloved 109's,that they've forgotten that its not the plane that does the work,its the pilot http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif LOL

As for P-39 pilots....I envy them http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Mad respect for our Cobra brethen out there.In regards to the Cobra,I've learned this...It might not bite the first time you poke and swat at it.But by god watch your *** when you turn away from them less you enjoy having a 37mm crammed up your bum http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

It actually seems they are hell-bent on enjoying themselves flying their tricky aircraft.

==============================================

Tricky ?

Whats tricky about 109s ? there some of the best ac in the sim

They have Massive Power, & climb rate, huge cannons for spliting bandits in half & can turn very well if you know what your doing ....

Tricky ? I think not, More closer to the Uber side than the tricky side imo.

Dont get me wrong I dont think there over/undermoddled I just think there very well rounded ac than can DF with just about anything.

03-16-2005, 11:04 PM
Umm, Locust, I think you may have misread my post... Referred to 190 not 109... (which I presume you are talking about: climb rate' 'well-rounded' and '190' are not usually mentioned in the same sentence http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

190 players enjoy the game, 109 people know how to enjoy themselves on the forum. Hmmm, hang on - where's that new performance chart gone again?

Man, you're right! Coming to think of it I always hated the TIE-fighter. Sooo, we have an "Underdog complex"? I guess that goes for the Hurricane lovers too, though they might have a more rugged "ground pounder"- disposition.
