View Full Version : Which of These Two Is Best Laptop?

Interested in a new laptop...still not convinced I actually need it and am swayed by the practicality of the wife's Advent 4211/MSI Wind clone .I would be 'planning' to use laptop for presentations at work /showing videos etc but I do have a Pentium 3 800MHz in my 'room' running XP Pro .Of course I like the idea of being able to game on it so probably placing an unecessary premium on the graphics card...Anyway :

ACER 5930G (Gemstone)

Basic 1280x800 screen-some say this is its Achilles heel

Apparently the 5920Gs sold outreal quick...This would be a massive success if it werent so big, heavy and ugly.

Your choice...tips?Thanks.

Go for the second one. You're not going to be able to run any serious game on 1920x1200 with an 8600m. If you want to use it for games that is.

But are you sure it's a 15.4 inch with a 1920x1200 resolution?

Yeah its the best of the 3 screen options in the Dell XPS .The Acer on the other hand reviews say has a bad screen (brightness 199 units vs XPs's 250 ish).
The Acer's Nvidia 9600M GT is hard to argue against.Theres a Hewlett Packard has one in it also but its about 300 euro more...
If I was just buying it for work the XPS cpu would win hands down .I love the design /style of the XPS but the (gaming) performance of the Acer wins hands down.
I reckon the Dell will hold its value much better ...As I have a home pc running an 8800GTX and 3.6 overclocked E6700 and 4GB RAM I may hardly use the laptop for gaming and obviously not for flight simming (joystick!).I would also use it at work as a 'book' replacement -reading PDF e-books
Relibility of the 8600M GT would obviously be a BIG concern...

I used an Acer for five years, it was a very solid notebook. It's nine years old now and still runs, albeit slowly. Fujitsu also makes very good notebooks but they cost a bit more.

Definately go for the second one as it uses the ATI graphics.

ANY of the newer lappys with Nvidia graphics are suspect...they sent out a whole lot of defective ones, and they are failing at an extroidinary rate.
