Okay, I don't have any earth shattering ideas, but hopefully as this thread evolves I'll end up with a new idea of something I can take apart and try to morph into some new simming device.

What I think will be mainstream for sims in the future:

- force feedback lumbar back support pads
- hydraulic motion chairs for less than $200
- modular cockpit gauges with a special USB hub and software interface to allow them to work with all future sims
- on-monitor air fans that change direction depending on which way you're flying (especially good for WW1 sims)
- dynamic room lighting that can change according to the levels of light in your simulator (ie. day, dusk, night)

Ideas?

The only thing that comes to my mind is FB combined with WW2 RTS and 1000 players arenas. Basically ww2online done by 1C.

USB powered genital vibrators and remote nipple tweakers.

I've been working on some prototypes but they don't have anything to do with video games....YET!

er, crazyivan, the best thing to probably hope for would be that IL2 FB gets integrated with ground thingy 1C is working on.

I'm a crappy pilot, but one hell of a shot.

All I want is an API to get flight data in real-time (like FS2xxx). Everything else will fall into place when all sims have a method of doing this (and one day, they will, I just wish that today was that day).

Genital "simulation"? Or genital stimulation?

I'd be happy with a decent commercially available, reasonably priced throttle quadrant that is marketed to WWII combat simmers. I mean real carb/fuel/prop pitch levers, preferably with 'flaps' on the same unit.

Massive Online battles, soldiers tanks aaa carriers manned flak guns pilot hangers to save your stats in, home bases for all squads on one huge online world map. wwiiol style mixed with bf1942 graphics and realism.

You used BF1942 and realism in the same sentence. But yes that would be awsome. Just think if all the vehicles/guns in FB were controlled by real people online. I bet you could get alot closer to the ships! Whenever you straffed trucks on the ground they would scatter in all different directions it would be so cool. Talking with people on the ground to set up close air support etc. would be sweet.

Pipe dream. Never gonna happen. The good old interweb just wont let it be. No matter how much bandwidth they make available, pr0n+flamewares+spam will always use it up

Now lets back to that api.

I look forward to the day when any dad can go pick out his "cockpit". No more arguments of trackir. No more arguments over FOV. No more silly ideas of semi-transparent struts (since you'll have real struts). No more forward visibility whines. No more CPU killing cockpits... Just pure physics/ world rendering. No more insta-trim-sliders!

We're almost there. Price wise, you're looking at about $10,000 for a balls-out home simulator, but hardware always gets cheaper /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Right now, You can do a "reasonably real" simulator for just a few grand. The display system may not be the best, but that technology gets better and cheaper all the time.

I want flight data! I want real guages! I want "no cockpit" players to whine whine whine about my simulator-cheat! Yeah!

They have those wicked simulators for like training, but those arent mainstream.

A good thing that CAN be done now is a projection semicircular display. It will not be as sharp as you want, but then, can any of you honestly say that you would see a plane from 10 Km away with a camo going below you? No...I thought not.

Then, speakers.....a must. Something like TRACKIR, but better.

And of course, a semi-authentic seat, with pedals, throttle, and other basic things...+ a keypay for those extra features that arent available on your seat.

The screen alone would cost something like 8000...so its not gona be for everyone.

Nope. Too expensive and the resolutions/ lighting requirements make matters worse. I think Dex might even be able to confirm this. A projector is a nice idea, but just not flexible enough. Hold that thought.....

Speakers? Panasonic has one of the BEST digital headphones on the market.. for $40! I bought a pair and would not trade the things for any speakers, ever. The crappy 3d capabilities of the Soundblaster Live! REALLY shows itself with good headphones. I hear the audigy2 does spatial processong much better... I've one on my wishlist /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

TrackIR will one day be obsolete, but for now, it makes a fantastic stop-gap.

Here is where I blow your mind. Please check this out:
http://www.acesim.com/main.html

Customer completed units (the steel version is KICK-A$$):
http://www.acesim.com/ready.html
(Yes, it really moves with joystick. Is it realistic? No, read further down).

1 LCD wont cut the mustard though. We need this:
http://www.matrox.com/mga/3d_gaming/enhanced_games/forgotten_battles.cfm

Well of course there are more toys to buy!
http://www.simkits.com/products.php
(May we please have access to flight data now? Peer pressure Oleg, All the other sims are doing it! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif )

We need more "immersion". Lets toss a pair of these in:
http://www.keohi.com/keohihdtv/accessories/bassshakers.html

Oh yeah, we're going to need control electronics. We want all our switches and buttons to work:
http://www.vif.com/users/leolacava/index.html
(Leo also provides the software needed to program his boards. He's uber-cool)

So, now we have CheatXP as a platform, how much has it cost us? Without figuring in the cost of your computer, about $2,000. You have to build the thing yourself, but thats half the fun.

With FS98,2000,20002, and CFS2/3, you can read flight data directly from the game. This is how you make your guages work. You can also use it to drive actuators to controll pitch/ yaw. The reason for this is to use the above mention cockpit as an active-motion-simulator... or in other words, it moves based on what the sim tells it, rather than movement based on stick angle. Even without the feedback from the sim, the body + ingame cues can fool the sim pilot into thinking he's really flying.

Ya'll smelling what i'm cooking here?

BTW: Yes, I realise I have an addiction. At least i'm not out on the streets bothering citizens. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Dex, is this the kinda stuff you were looking for? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

How do those aircraft gauges work with flight sims? Does FB need to have some programming built in to allow their use? Hoe the heck do you tell the gauge what to look for in the sim so it reads correctly?

I assume there is a programmable control module of sorts with USB connector?

The neighbor kids and I will be building a plywood cockpit this summer. It will look as authentic as possible. Don't know which aircraft we will use as a reference. Of course it will be downsized considerably also.

I inquired at radio shack for the type of toggle switches I could use to emulate key strokes if I tore apart a keyboard and hardwired it. This would allow me to make some control blocks with toggles that could be mapped like keystrokes. Also each one will have some means of being labeled and easily changing the labels to suite future sims.

The throttle, prop control, mixture, etc. levers will be located in quadrants. I may be tearing apart a hotas and using the potentiometers and other guts for my own build. This will be located in the pit appropriately.

Rudder pedals will also be built using the corresponding potentiometer in the hotas.

The monitor of course will sit in a cutout in the control panel and lined up to make sense.

You guys have me pumped now.

Cut the price of AVGas100LL. Or let that diesel aircraft engines work well.
Build more WWII-Replica fighters, this will lower their price. Rent them freely.
Cut price for flight lessons and lessen restricted air space.

Who will need flight sims then? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Popov_Smirnov,

You'll want to get "momentary contact" switches for your keyboard matrix. I woulnd't bother with radio shack since you can order this sort of thing through electronics wholesalers for mucho cheapo (mouser electronics would be a good start point).

Check out the site mention earlier. Leo has a nice kit he's building at lets you wire up 64 switches, and then program them in Windows using his software. Since it uses USB, you can add another 64 switches by adding another one of his control boards.

He's also got programable joystick boards. 3-axis through 6 axis, all USB. Added bonus: He's a helluva nice guy to talk to via email.

I need to get all my cockpit links together and get them posted online. You can learn a LOT about this stuff by just surfing /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
