Hi everyone.

There is no need to explain you fox, why dog fight at 500 feet can be addictive. Yet I wonder if there is a game for fictional dogfight in space.
I dont mean just very high abouve the ground, like you can do in lomac. I mean fiction with nice sci-fy gaphics. and i do not mind fight against aliens http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. As long i get to use my joystick!.

Does anyone happen to know of game like that?

Thank you for any feedback.

Freelancer is good. Also try and find X-Gold, X2 or Freespace 2.

Babylon 5: Into the Fire

There's a free demo in there somewhere. I loved it personally.

I rather liked Starlancer.

Descent III was a very good "zero gravity" sim. It even boasted very good online play and video graphix for it's day.

It's a shame so many years have passed without a sequal.

FreeSpace 2....space sim/shooter like no other. Can be found for free on various websites now as there is no publisher anymore (doesn't exist) and its not sold anymore either.

Really? I got my copy from a friend who broke his joystick and couldn't play it any more - it is a truely excellent game.

X2 is my current space/management sim - I haven't played it for months though. PF and BFVietnam are more compelling...

Freelancer = not a dogfighter per se. It's more a shooter. You just upgrade your fighter enough, and can sit stationary in battle, swivelling to take out even dreadnoughts with superior firepower and armour http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. It doesnt have the sense of speed and turning battles of Wing Commander, for example.

However, it has excellent free-roam/trade/pirate/smuggler/merc choose-your-path options - kinda like GTA in space, so it's still a good game.

Something with space shuttles like in the scene from Moonraker.

I would also put in a vote Freespace2. Its a 'real physics' space combat sim.

Something a little different is Homeworld which is a space based RTS, which had me hooked for a while. Apparently Homeworld 2 has a pretty good multiplayer community out there.

For story line, great gameplay and general coolness (and some similarity to a WW2 style of dogfighting) go for the X-Wing serise. Apart from IL2, Operation Flashpoint and Zedla the X-Wing/TIE Fighter/X-Wing vs TIE Fighter/X-Wing Alliance serise is the only game serise that I own every copy, incarnation and expansion of. Actually I may be missing a Zelda here or there as I think they released on for the 'Virtua Boy' some time in 96/97. Wasn't going near that particular piece of cr@p http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Most "space" shooter is mere fun. It is a dense atmosphere in space in all of them.

Only one I have seen that tried to be "realistic" was a succesor to the Elite game, dont remember the name. No upper speed limit, no sound in space, no atmosphere-turning, used rockets to all movements, including stoping. Only force and inertia, no friction.

"Dogfightig" is of course nearly impossible.

But WWI-like spaceshooters like wingcommander had its charm...

Freespace 2 was the best, hands down.

I ran a Squadron during the heated Squadwars.

We won 3 Leagues and after that we retired since it was the last time the game developers where going to reset the map and continue to support the system behind it.

We had some great times and the Squadron rivalry was legendairy.
You think you saw heavy flamewars in here?
Well, you haven't been to the Freespace 2 Squadwar forum when Squadwars was in it's glory time then. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thats one of the reasons why VBB forum was shut down. Then all the arguing landed in my lap at the VWBB.

I only did the first round of Squadwar. People were cheating too much so I gave up.

X- Wing alliance is the last good space sim of lucasarts. A team of enthousiast even recreated all the 3d-models and added cockpits for almost every fighter so it still looks good.

I spent a lot of time with Starlancer. Good dogfighting, Ai wingmen and an Instant action feature made it for me.

On top of that, you can pick it up for ten bucks in the bargain bin. What's not to like?

I-War 2 is very good, newtonian physics ( I don't remember freespace having those, but I've only ever played the demo . . )

free story, again similiar to privateer/GTA.

decent story, too, though some of the early voices can be annoying.

decent graphics, even today. good times.

bought some, then they end up overunning the ship 'escape' lol.
done freelancer, too much same-o-same-o...visit it every year or so http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif best server i recently played on was serverside modded, well balanced with the ability to start as different factions,Nomad was HARD http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif Xeno almost as hard...down to outcasts,BH,corsairs, trader etc etc..

I'm waiting for Elite 4,if it ever appears...nothing but rumours...but Elite was/is the best space-sim I've ever played.

Wing Commander I, II and III are THE best space simulation games ever. I even traded Amiga for PC just to be able to play WC III. I loved Mark Hamill as Chris Blair. WC IV was so-so, more an addon to WC III. To much FMV, but was impressive in 1996. I don't like WC V Prophecy because Blair gets killed. I'm still waiting for WC VI. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Freespace 2, X-Wing series and I-War Deluxe. Furballs were hairy in X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter.

Hehehe, yeah I know.
But cheating could be proved easy and the developers would always rule in favor of the side that didn't cheat so after a while they just gave up cheating, at least in the European league.
The most cr@p came from the US league with all the high profile Squads like RN, TCA (And all their sub Squads), Drak, Angels Squadron and Nexus Squadron.

The only "problem" Squads in the Euro league where the Mad Cows and the EFA (Later renamed to Angels of Europe or something) but they got butt kicked pretty hard by the Euro hard ball Squads like the Freedom Fighters, Darkwing (later renamed to DRAGONFORCE), (I forgot the name of the guys who used the red color on the map with the Danish leader) and us, the DSA.
We formed this huge alliance to break their cheating @sses but as soon as we dominated the map owning 23 systems they all turned their attention on us, hehehe.
But it was all in good fun and friendly rivalry.
We still won the league owning 19 systems in the end. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The Angels of Europe on the map in white on the far right and their sub squad in blue trapped behind us where obsessed with defeating us after they posted on the Squadwar forum for all to see how they where going to crush us with their superiour tactics. (They used to be trapped behind us on the left side with both blue and white squads but let themselves kicked off the map with the white Squardon and re-entered on the left since they where unable to break out. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I looked at it but my Spanish is rather poor.....or better said, none existant so I all could do was look at the screens and I am downloading the 50mb video now.

Other then that I have no idea what the game is actually about other then that it has spaceships in it.

I am pretty bummed out since no space sim ever matched up against Freespace 2 and since the Freespace series is dead in the water because those dog $hit taco's at Interplay (that doesn't even exist anymore) refuse to sell the rights to the name. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I-War 2 (Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos) is the most realistic, and a very good & understimated game too.
