Just curious, do modern homing torpedoes ping their target as they approach so the sonar officer can properly inform the captain about the activities of the torpedo? I mean as seen in the movie?

You know how that sonar Soviet talks to the captain in the movie: "High speed screw! Torpedo in the water! (ping...ping) Torpedo has acquired! (ping! ping!! ping!!! ping!!!!) Torpedo is homing! (the ping turn into a high crescendo as the torpedo informs the crew it's seconds away)"

What is real homing torpedo evasion like in a submarine?

Yes they do, this is called "active homing"

The evasion procedure is : Top speed, launch countermeasures and alter course.

Additionaly the sub can try to change its depth to make use of thermal layers in hope to weaken the torpedo's sonar reflection receptance, lowering the possibilty that it reaquires you after a failed attack run.

Then hope that the torpedo looses you. This procedure gets repeated until the torpedo has lost you, accidently triggers prematurely or runs out of power.

Not a very effective way of defense though.

Its more a thing of luck and the grade of technical sophistication of the torpedo than of what you do to evade it.

There was not much significant technical improvement in countermeasures.

This is the point where super-cavitating weapons as active anti-torpedo weapon come into play http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

But thats still sci-fi. No navy has such a weapon capable of that in service at the present time.

But the development is surely underway.

If your enemy uses a super cavitating torpedo offensive on you. You can kiss it goodbye. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Escape is not an option, just hope that it takes on your countermeasures at the first attack run......thats all you can do http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Regarding SHKVAL, it's like being shot at with a rifle. You don't really have time to get out of the way, and even if you do get countermeasures off quickly enough the only hope is that the torpedo is aimed at a countermeasure rather than you - since at the speed SHKVAL travels, you'd get nailed with the torp before it decided that the countermeasure was a better target. At least at short ranges, but that's always the golden rule: Get close and kill them.
