Greetings good Player,
Thank you for your interest in my latest Luftwaffe Pilot: Afrika! Campaign. It gladdens the heart to see so many people snap it up so quickly.

Following are some screenshots of a new campaign which is already underway. Please note that my life is about to change drastically in the next week or so so this campaign will not be released very soon.
Read on...

Nice, it's a hurricane campain i presume? Should be nice since then all we need is a bomber camain and will have most of BOB covered. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif Because then we wont need SOW http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Nice, Hurris in the Battle of France. I'm just reading 'Fighter Pilot' (Paul Richey) so this is particularly appealing at the moment.

How DARE you make such an unbalanced campaign.

You should at least give the Germans a chance and not use the 'Vastly Superior' Hurricane!!

FlatSpinMan

It's going to be quite tough alright - the Hurri Mk1 doesn't have a lot of advantages over the 109 and 110, except of course, the famous RAF pluck, dash and verve! Huzzah!

Xiolablu3
06-15-2007, 11:49 PM
Ahhh, FSM, you obviously dont know about the 'Vastly superior Hurricane'.

Those Bf109's will have no chance.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Flatspin,

Thank you soooo much for the Afrika Campaign. This was the first campaign I tried after getting my new TrackIR 4 with Trackclip. I have just finished the campaign and it has kept me on the edge of my seat. I really liked the variety (visiting old ruins nearly did my head in)

I now have a new found respect for the early 109. It can really dish it out to the P40 and hurricane.

Looking forward to your next masterpiece

Goz

P.S I don't know if it was the trackir or the interest level in the campaign but I scored my highest kills every - 78 airtargets and 13 ground.

Xiolablu3 - "vastly superior to the Me-109F". Hmmm. Yeah. I'm gonna have to think about that one.
Loved the old BBC accent and clipped speech, like Mr. Cholmondely-Warner on harry Enfield.

I believe its Flatspinman Jnr time.

About that Hurricane footage, it must be true because the Western Allies didnt use propaganda.

Teh Hurricnae in IL2 is vastly undermodelled!

Hi Madsarmy - luckily it is for the better. As Xiolablu3 said, FlatSpinBaby MkI's arrival is imminent.

MarkGos - I'm really pleased to hear you enjoyed it so much. Your score is a good one - I've never actually played all the way through keeping score so I don't know how many kills I got. The 109E has a pretty fearsome bite and I find the cannon really good to shoot with - good rate of fire, power plus quite a lot of ammo.
I'm also pleased to see someone mention the ruins. I was getting sick of building the usual combat missions so felt like doingsomething different. It's a good test of flying, too.

An early war/Battle of France scenario makes one hope that the current game's campaigns and missions will be transferable to the SoW series the same way the original Il-2 Sturmovik's campaigns & missions were to Forgotten Battles et al...

Well, despite the lovely little distraction that arrived a couple of months ago, I have still managed to chip away at this one. It is really hard making missions surprising, challenging and yet survivable for the player flying a MkI. I base my campaign's difficulty level at slighty higher than my own (as I don't actually fly for fun that much, mainly just while making misions) and I am having to ditch or bail fairly frequently. This does reasonate with the accounts of pilots at the time though I suppose.
Anyway, there's still a long way to go but here arer some screenshots from various missions I have already made.

Thanks for your great work FlatSpinMan http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Always tip-top and I'm looking forward to this RAF one.

I lways find it frustrating that the Mk 1a Hurricane that we have available is the 1938 version that was exported to Finland. It has an engine of 900 hp whereas the 1940 RAF version was 1,000 hp. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

I think that there were other refinements also.

But, it will be great to fly and I'm impressed with your screenshots!

BTW..long ago, in a far off universe I too was the father of a baby...and how my life changed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

looking good mate.....nice scenery there

I just hate those planes with early carburettors though which are always cutting out...
my poor flying....not your fault

I am pretty handy at making good railyards by tweaking things in notepad...and the newer maps have some good stations with nice railyards...it is just a time consuming task to populate them with trains and getting them to move on all the rails...not just the 'live' one... so if you need any help let me know

Well, a day off by myself and I've got a fair bit of work done on the campaign (and had a few beers in peace) so it's been good.
Here we see part of "A"Flight beating up the French aerodrome at Velaine.

And shortly afterwards, Sqn Ldr Patrick Wilson flying low with the charming ville of Reims in the background.

Gradually things begin to intensify in the air war as the Phoney War begins increasingly misnamed.

PLAYING NOTES
The missions are being designed around the premise that the player is not using Icons (or as I do, using the Toggle Icons option so that I can use them if need to, say in a swirling dogfight). I always used Icons in the past but in this campaign even I am able to find targets fairly easily without them and it really does add so much immersion to the action so I recommend players try it this way. Some of the missions will be much less surprising if Icons are always on. I was inspired to do this by playing the excellent first mission of Compan's similarly themed campaign. I wanted to play the rest but was afraid I'd end up copying all his great work so will wait until my one is finished before resuming. I'd recommend it to anyone though.
Here's the link to COMPAN'S campaign "With No.32 Sqn in France" at Mission4Today (http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=2883)

Finally, I leave you with my other piloting trademark - not the Flat Spin part, but..

@ FSM,

I have completed the first two missions and made a kill!

Very engrossing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Flown with full switch settings.

But can you advise me about the new GB speech folder?

Should I drop the new GB folder into the the existing GB folder? I have done this but in the mission I only hear the 'old' GB voice pack and the French voice pack.I have also removed and backed up the 'old' GB voice pack.

Best Regards,
MB_Avro.

@Avro - Compan's campaign is well done, isn't it? His speech pack is also lots of fun, especially the first time you hear it. What you did sounds right but I can't remember exactly. maybe you have to take the files out put I don't think so. You'll definitely know if it works or not.

@Magic - hate to disappoint but this is actually an RAF campaign (although I may do the LW side one day)

@Divine_Wind - I was reading Paul Richey's book and he mentioned being able to see the name of an aerodrome, Esch in Luxembourg I think, and it makes sense for a pre-war/early-war setting.

@VonGrantoven - domo. Stamp down mercilessly on those scum for the sake of European civilisation!

Haven't been able to make many more missions recently but got lots of sorting out and continuity work with the briefings done. Also made a fun low-level bomber chase mission.

First up, a very roughly made map of the area of operations. This is based on the map in Paul Richey's "Fighter Pilot" book but with LOOOOOTS of artistic licence. it'll be included in the campaign download so you can print it out.

Thank 'ee, thank 'ee. Guitarman - if you have any other comments can you let me know.
DivineWind - steal away - it's quite fun but can be very frustrating when the AI gunners nail your engine. still, it makes you jink about while flying so it's good training I suppose. I mainly built it so players would notice the work I'd done on the town underneath.

By the way, the "Dornier" was done by HH-Beebop. Adds some nice variety.

Oops. hadn't noticed these replies, sorry. Thanks for your continued interest guys.
It's coming along slowly but surely. If you have read anything about teh actual campaign, as you are FF, then I hope this IL2 campaign will recreate some of the atmosphere and events of the Battle. I have tried to follow the timeline of events quite closely so the campaign will build more slowly than say, my Afrika one. However, the final missions are anything but dull (actually I don't think the other ones are either -there should be combat in every mission. Here are a few of the latest shots from the Dunkirk sequence. This one is FUN.

No need, dear na85, or can I call you sodium85?
My PC is only 1Gig of Ram, a P4 3.2 GHZ processor and a positively archaic nVidia fx5900GT card and it runs fine, especially on Excellent which is where I should probably set graphics all the time. Another guy - fly_zo who has a slightly better system than mine reported no probs on Perfect settings. It looks intense on your PC but i fact it's not even that many objects. In my Afrika campaign I probably had more objects around the base than are at "Dunkirk".

Haig - I'll send it asap.

Just one more pic - this from a short mission wherein you have to hunt an escaping Fifth Columnist. Quite good fun, I think.

Hi Jude, long time no communicate! I see you are still at it, and doing a bang up job as usual!

I bailed from IL2 in April 2006 as you might remember, and uninstalled the whole lot, not even checking the forums. It was a combination of burnout, frustration with AI bombers/torp planes, but mostly the family troubles you and I discussed back then.

Two weeks ago I got the bug back--big time, but not certain why--bought/dld 1946, reinstalled all the old (and new) must-have utilities, bought the TrackIR Clip, and started in like crazy with building and converting missions, and learning to fly all over again.

Congratulaions on FSM Junior (boy? girl? pilot?). Can't wait to try out this latest campaign.

I'm very glad to see the respect the community has for you and your work, Jude. You certainly deserve it!

er....that would be "testing."

Btw, Jude, check out my Groupcloner question on the Mission Builders Forum, maybe you can help. It's taken me a full two weeks to download and tweak all my old utilities, and some new ones, plus I had bee-atch of a time getting CH Manager programmed right---I forgot everything I learned about all these gadgets. But I had never tried GC out, and I just can't get it to perform right.

Thanx!

Cripes! Just noticed the date of the first post - June16! Got to finish this sucker off soon. Things got in the way somewhat, notably real life, helping out on some other projects plus the new maps and objects.
I would say I'm almost ready but then you and I both know that's not to be trusted, don't we?

Like these first two shots. Rather unorthodox but you have to grab your fighter-to-fighter kils when you can get 'em in the dear old Hurri.

Hey again guys, yep, this is a campaign written by a busy dad for other busy dads (and anybody else of course). making it I didn't have much time so a lot of the missions are quite short so you can get one or two in in a sitting.
Skarphol - when those kids go to sleep have a beer and try it out. feel for yourself the uber hitting power of those mighty .303s and the powerful surge as you race through the skies at speeds approaching 300km/h.

A nice plane, the Hurri. Not a good one, but a nice one.
Make sure you tip the parachute folder genereously as you'll definitely be needing his servies. Some beers for the ground crew will also be a good idea to help them relax after all that overtime they'll be doing patching your kite up.

Well, I had a go at it last night!
Managed to down a He-111 and then shoot off the elevators of another Heinkel. Then an odd thing happened; the bomber made a forward flip over on its back and fell vertical to the ground inverted from about 4000m end straight into the ground. All the way, my fellow squadmates and a few ecstatic frenchmen followed it down, making several passes at the falling plane.
Anyway, my plane was quite beaten up, and I had to glide my way back towards my airfield. Wich was very difficult to find but, I allmost managed to glide all the way back after a few slow turns.
I guess the mechanics will have a lot to do with my crate in the near future, as I have to get really close to the bombers to achieve results. Those brownings may be numerous, but they sure don't do much damage!

Well, I'm looking forward to tonights mission!

As with all of your campaigns, I'm really enjoying this one. I was a little apprehensive at first, as I don't usually fly the Hurri MkI, but I'm having a lot of fun, and learning how to fly the Hurri. I really like the layout of that first "airfield" was awesome. You can bet I buzzed that house at the end of the runway/road. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

FlatSpinMan

Good work Skarphol. You'll probably get a bit of practice at deadstick landings in this campaign. I got shot down all the time by the bombers. And if I wasnt actually shot down I invariably had bullet holes through the cockpit. Watch the "Dorniers" - their guns pack a real punch and the gunners are harder to take out than that poor sod in the He-111's upper gun position - I get him all the time.

Crucislancer - thank you. You were right to be apprehensive about flying the Hurri in combat. Against fighters it's really hard going I found, especially the way the AI can climb vertically at any time.

By the way, I missed some skins in a few missions - either didn't include them in the pack, or misassigned them in the mission. If anybody wants the corrected version it's at M4T. Hopefully it's just in two missions but could be in more.

FSM, I am about 4 missions in and loving it! Have downed 2 HE111s and an ME109! The airfield you have created with the house at the end of the runway is fantastic. So immersive. Really feels like you are flying out of a quickly set up aerodrome in France. Will fly more tonight after I finish up homework with my three kids.

Thanks so much for making this great campaign. Best regards to you and your new daughter (she is beautiful).

Yeah, they are tough indeed. That mission coming back all alone when two 109s show up was a tough one. I got both, the first I was able to nail his engine on a head-on pass (he crashed much later), the second took quite a bit more time and all my ammo. After my guns went dry, I made a funny mistake. I stuck with the 109 has he slowly lost altitude, trying to make him maneuver into the ground. Just after he skips off the ground and slides in, I did the same thing since I was too low! My hurri came to a stop about 300 meters away, then I waited for him to bail out and get my credit before I ended the mission.

Hey guys,
Thanks very much for your comments. I'm glad you are enjoying it and the briefings - those take a long time. Yep, one late night I was bored of making the usual briefings so I popped in a (hopefully) humourous pastiche from a scene in The Holy Grail.

I think people are finding this campaign's start too slow paced, especially compared to Afrika. I have usually recieved far more feedback on campaigns by this point. It's being downloaded pretty steadily which always gladdens my heart. I think the plane selection also puts people off - the Hurri is quite hard work to do well in whereas the 109 is able to do anything you ask of it and has those most gratifying cannons in the wings. I'm looking forward to juming back in the cockpit of the Emil or maybe the Friedrich for some Steppe action.

Cheers one and all. I leave you with a few clips from my recent efforts at the campaign. How many of you have suffered the same fate while buzzing the trigger-happy French troops on manouevres?
