I note on the Avsim web site that they are selling "COMBAT OVER EUROPE" by GMX Media, as an add on to IL2 FB. I have "BATTLE OVER EUROPE" by Just Flight, which I like, with some reservation.

Does anyone have any experience with Combat Over Europe? They are advertising a Battle of Britain campaign "with a non UK map", whatever that means.

Is it worth the cost?

Thank you.

Yes, I saw box in the store. It is a 3. party product. It includes only things that ordinary user like you and me can make, so new skins, missions etc...

For BOB I think they used the Finnish gulf map (the most appropriate one), but I also wonder how did they make Battle of Britain campaign without early Spitfire and Bf110, so they probably used only Stuka, He111, Bf109 and Hurri http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

This interview explains how these maps and Western Front objects were created and why campaigns are supported only in a separate product, called Battle over Europe.

http://www.simhq.com/_air/air_110a.html

Since that time, there have been two updates. I've enjoyed BoE and the Normandy maps.

I would also like to say not everyone has been pleased with BoE. To them, and those who are considering buying, if you order from Just Flight, they have an excellent return policy. I am leaving part of it here. The rest can be found on the Fair Deal page of thier homesite at: http://www.justflight.com/

"We provide a satisfaction guarantee on all our own published products (no matter where purchased) and a money back guarantee on all products bought directly from us whether faulty or otherwise. If you are unhappy in any way with a product you have purchased directly from us (or a product published by Just Flight purchased elsewhere) then please write or e-mail us and tell us why within 28 days of receipt. We will then provide details of how you may return the product (at your cost) for a refund or exchange."

Steve_V's link underlines the basic controversy between the two products:

The Normandy and Ardennes maps were originally built for BOE and should have been 'exclusive' to BOE. BOE is a package of more of Starshoy's DGen missions, but this time for the Western Europe maps and offering USAAF/RAF careers (not otherwise in FB or AEP). However, in order to get the maps into the game without violating either certain legalities or the overall online compatibility, Luthier (Ilya), the creator of those maps, had to allow these maps to be released for free in FB_upgrade_121. A competitor who had been working on a series of scripted missions jumped on the opportunity to use the free Normandy and Ardennes maps for his product, which he released very shortly after as COE.

Whatever your opinion is regarding the suspiciously similar subject matter, title and release date of the two products, it is best to look at them as alternative means to the same end: USAAF and RAF careers over Western Europe. BOE is 'dynamic' (aka DGen) in the same way as FB's stock campaigns are; COE is scripted/branched, much like most free download campaigns are. Both come with a library of skins. The real question is which kind of campaign structure do you prefer?

BOE has some update patches to utilize the planes in Ace Expansion Pack; more info and the patches are at the home site at Justflight.com.

I don't know if COE has any similar update patches; the product website (http://www.combatplanes.ca/prod2.htm) still advertises that it has substituted the LaGG fighter for a Spitfire, as AEP hadn't been released at that time. A follow-up product (http://www.combatplanes.ca/prod2a.htm) is advertised for the Ace Expansion Pack. If nothing else, go to the Samples Page (http://www.combatplanes.ca/m_c.htm) and download the free version of the RAF mini campaign, which does use the Spitfire Mk.V in AEP (and the Gulf of Finland map) -- it is actually pretty enjoyable.

I'm assuming that you are looking for Western Front combat scenarios. If so there are some great ones that you can dowload for free. I have several of the third party addons and although they are all decent, I don't think anyone of them was really worth the money. You can find fantastic campaigns for download. I just started playing Extreme_Ones' Two DUCS campaign and I'm having a great time with. A lot of attention to detail and very well done missions. Although I'd bet its shorter than the campaigns that I have in BOE or that are in COE, its a lot more fun and it was FREE. Its available on the dowload section of this website and there is tons of great free third party content over at netwings.org, il2missions and airwarfare.
