Thanks,
Junior

Hi JuniorUK
You could try First Eagles, but its not really a sim... good fun though!

I don't know what you already know (or when you first knew it), but here are some possibilities:

1. Over Flanders Field (http://off.oldbrowndog.net/), a mod for Combat Flight Simulator 3. It's still a work in progress, but Stage 2 is about to be released. Look for the demo movie at the site.

2. First Eagles (http://www.simhq.com/_air8/air_266a.html) by Third Wire, the developers of Strike Eagles, Wings Over Vietnam, and Wings Over Europe. Incidently, I happen to know the guy who modelled several of the planes and vehicles for First Eagles, and he told me the other night that his employer has already has him working on material for a possible upgrade or expansion. FWIW. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

3. Not here yet, but coming soon ... Knights of the Skies (http://www.gennadich.com/). This one looks like it will be absolutely amazing -- if they ever finish it.

4. There is an large WWI mod project for the old Fighter Squadron: Screaming Demons Over Europe game (1998). Look here for information (http://www.fsww1.com/). I don't know if the links still work, and you'll need a copy of FS:SDOE.
* Edit: GoGamer.com carries FS:SDOE for $5 (http://www.gogamer.com/searchresults.htm;jsessionid=B68F295445378F6BC561D 05E40A3D452?keywords=Fighter+Squadron&brandId=&price=&653Search=true&categoryId=444710&x=35&y=13).<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

IMHO OFF is one of the best freeware add ons to any program, ever. Its the only reason why i reinstalled CFS3. Its very nicely detailed and its also great fun to play. Plus the price cant be beat.. (assuming you already own CFS3).<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

SimHQ did a review for Over Flanders Field Phase 1 (http://www.simhq.com/_air5/air_172a.html).

And speaking of freeware mods for CFS3, Mediterranean Air War (http://www.medairwar.com/) is progressing along nicely.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Best one i have played has been Red Baron II/3D.

I still play it sometimes, if you don't mind graphics from stone age and some compatibility problems with XP, that's your game.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thank you very much to everyone. As I can see there isn't anything close to IL2.

Thanks again,
Junior

Congratulations, you drew the correct conclusion. I have FIRST EAGLES and OVER FLANDERS FIELDS, and the latter beats the former. Unfortunately, I do not think either are palatable to anyone who has used IL-2 46. KNIGHTS OF THE SKY will be the maximum solution for which we all await.

..... provided that the AI and Dynamic Campaign are suitably handled.

I consider the term "combat flight simulation" to encompass more than just good graphics and FM fidelity. It also implies an obligation to model the nature and uncertainties of the tactical environment(s) in which the modelled a/c historically would have taken part.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Another prospective vote here for Knights of the Skies. Really looking forward to this one as well.

I will be resoundingly happy to just fly those beauties. Right now I have ditched FE and OFF for a couple beautiful, labor of love models for FS9/X which have the aerodynamic characteristics of the Bleriot monoplane and the Fokker D.VII nailed down to a degree not even close in FE and OFF. When we can see the amount of detail being lavished on KOS, even on incidental objects, I am certain those lovable maniacs are going to present something which may redefine "immersive."

OFF is still CFS3. You can't polish a turd. (when I first got CFS3, before Oleg released the 229, I took it up in CFS3 and proceeded to see what kind of trouble I could get it, I got it into a high speed 720 degree tumble (not a spin, a tumble), and it never lost altitude, OR speed. Plane modeling or no, the physics engine should NEVER allow something like that)

FE is expensive **** for 4 planes.

The best out there (and yes, a good one does exist) is FS-WWI. Go to http://www.openplanesim.com and head down to the FS-WWI section.

It is NOT the best eye candy. But a real simmer is more interested in physics and damage modeling than in visuals (that's for the arcade kids). However, that said, it's really not bad, visually. You just need to crank up the res and FSAA a bit.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

FE is ridiculous for 4 planes, and the patch just released did not fix the problems with 3 of them---the user is supposed to root around in the files himself. FE is for modders---everybody else is not recognized. Compare this with the lightning fast patching we get from Oleg! This is why Oleg is world class and Third Wire isn't.
