welcome hdjuey. I personally try not to attack ships enroute to my patrol grid, unless it is something big and tasty. I usually do my patrol (sometimes sinking something, sometimes not) then head off to a real high traffic area for some hunting. Those areas can be found on the map included with the game.

As for sailing back to base, I highly recommend doing so. You don't have to, but you get more renown for doing so. Hope you enjoy.

hi hdjuey,

yes, all mission are grid patrols, you can attack ships enroute, but id avise you only attack large ships enroute (ie. cargo and tankers) to conserve torpedoes. you can head back to base (within 30km) and end mission to gain extra renown.

i hope that answers your question. a bit of extra advise is to head to your assigned grid and complete mission ASAP. then you are free to do what you like, heading to an area with alot of merchant traffic is best, if not head back to base sinking anything you want enroute.

Hello hdjuey, Welcome to the Hotel California! I personally sink ships when they are available. Be it on my way to patrol grid, in patrol grid or on my way home. I have had too many instances where I passed up a ship to save torpedoes only to find the weather suddenly turns horrible and I can't see 50 feet. Returning to base with torpedoes in the tubes when I passed up a ship earlier is MADDENING!!

Welcome aboard hdjuey!

It is perfectly up to you what to do. There is no rule.

I always attack merchants that come across my path.

Even if you run out of torpedoes before you get to your patrol zone you can still go to your patrol zone and patrol it for the 24 hours to get renown and THEN head home.
So if you come across a huge convoy on your way to your patrol zone, attack it to your hearts content, use up all of your torps and then go to your PZ.

What sage advice!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Personally, I don't let the watch crew set up the BBQ on deck in windspeeds greater than 7 m/s

But seriously, attack if they are within distance (<100 Km), the weather is good (you don't want to be hunting ghosts in the dark) and you have the torps and fuel. You don't want to burn up too much fuel chasing single ships around when you can be hitting convoys and small convoys.
