Bearcat and I both did this in no-icon coops last night, ie, lit up a friendly instead of the enemy. I did in a Corsair to another Corsair, Bossman lit up a Mustang while flying a Pony himself. Okay, lets see a show of hands, who's shot off the wing surfaces of a comrade online???

Oops mis read your post

Yup been there done that, still strikes me as an inevtable side effect of several dozen lone gun men on points quest.

Lesson here, I guess, is its a good reason to have and stick with your squad/team mates.

Guilty!

I was tooling along in my trusty SBD "Clarabell" (don't sneak up behind her...she has a mean kick) when I spotted a bogie coming in from 8 o'clock so's I hopped in the back seat fer a surprise party.

Closer...closer...closer...Ha! Now I got ya you son of a...doh!

Luckily, I ascared him more than anything. Only got one of those Friend or Foe charts they was handin' out in flight school so I gave it to my gunner. Now I let him make a positive ID before I hop in back...

Hmm, if the co-op featured historical planesets, then the first order of business seems to be more training in aircraft identification during battle.

Were Externals ON? If so, F6 and SHIFT+F6 would have shown you who was an enemy and who wasn't, even if padlock was OFF.

If the co-op had the same planes on both sides with no-icons, well, then that's just insane as you have to wait to see their skin markings before shooting. That takes waaaaaaay too long.

People still fly with icons on??? Where's the funn in that?
In my early days I shot one or two down but you learn quickly. Keep focust.

I had my fair share of stupid incidents earlier, but recently I haven't shot any friendlies on purpose. I rather make some moves under or to the side of the aircraft, to see the markings, before firing a shot. I must resist the temptation http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nevertheless, I scored a -300 point reward some days ago, when a friendly crossed in-between my Rata and the Bf-109 running away. I was trying to shoot the Bf while in range, and although I stopped firing when the other aircraft (a La-5) passed behind the Bf-109, one of the 20mm shells destroyed his rudder control. Later he shot the Bf, returned to base, but crashed on landing... and I got my minus penalty.... No one was angry, combat zone is full of dangers, and accidents happen occasionally. Get over it and try to be very careful.

I blew a SBD out of the sky on Zekes v.s. Wildcats server once...
Granted, he was flying with gear down and he was using the Void for paint scheme (trying to be sneaky I assume). Even though he was cheating he was still P.O.'ed and verbally abusive.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
I have been known to fire rounds at friendlies (and have them fired at me) in head on attacks while in a furball, but none have resulted in a "kill".

lol...which reminds me...Couple of us were flying SBDs (again...yes...you gotta problem wit that?) and I decided I would sidle up next to my teammate and fly in formation. Well, he starts zigging and zagging and pulling this way and that and, ya know, I tried to keep up, ya know, for fun. Well, he gets on the comms, "Help! I gotta bogie chasin' me!" so I'm like, "Dude! It's me...we're the only two shmucks on the server!". Like, totally.

He was so embarrased. Fer sure.

A reference sheet like this would help any virtual pilot, when playing with no icons. This is how i see the planes when doing so. Or i try to, if i am not running into bloody kamikazi AI stealing my killz http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

Early on made my goofs (close in kills)....Learned to look for little cues, sometimes even having to wait for a plane to bank enough to flash a marking......Of late though it's only been 2 things....Stray bullets striking a plane in front of two I'm trying to clear......Or someone popping up between you and your prey trying to get the final stoke.

We've all done it at one point or another. I must say I have done it quite a bit in no icon servers on a bounce and run to realize after my volley that I was firing at a friendly D'OH! Needless to say I need glasses and less beer.

This is more of an embarrasing story:

When I flew the Fw-190 for the first time on CrazyIvan Eastern Front server a long time ago, I've tried to save a Ju-87 from a La-5 but I missed and shot down the Ju-87. Almsot got banned for life for that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif

I have the opposite issue, I wait too long to open up. One thing about pack hunting is that one of them lures you in. While you are fooling around trying to read the markings, the buddy is already on your six. I've died too many times by waiting too long as well.

It never ceases to amaze me, that it'll take a whole load of ammo to bring down an enemy, but 1 shell, fired off when your finger brushed the trigger, will turn a friendly into worthless scrap metal.

figure that one out. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

Humm, well when there are alot of aircraft in the area, it does tend to get difficult to make sure your rounds don't hit a friendly, especialy when your trying to clear a friendly's tail!

First friendly *kill* was me in a P-47 running in to Skychimp when we were both closing in on the same target! Sorry 'bout that Chimp.

fly without icons long enough you get a feel for who is who even without seeing the markings

eventually the icons actually get annoying and stuff up your aim

Try flying Macchis on a no-icon map. Capt. Morgan blew my 202 into two pieces, then told me to use the right icons...which I was doing! (He apologized--a good fellow when all is said and done, just not used to Eyeties in the air.)

I've had numerous folks flying German a/c take pot shots at the Macchi 200 I was using on I forget-what-server. No amount of warning messages could get 'em to stop, so it came time to leave.

Remember: Three Fasci on the wing = Axis a/c!

And, yes, I am guilty of friendly fire too, on an icon map no less. I switched teams and plumb forgot. Ended up lighting up some hapless Spit.

That's an easy one to figure out. Since it was a friendly, he did not view you as a threat, so he did not engage shields and warp drive to make 1/2 or more of your landed shots ineffective. He was probably just as shocked as you were to shoot at him.

Aaages ago, I was chasing this plane, and a friendly got in the way before I had a chance to dodge. We collided, and we both came out bad. But he died before me, so of course I got the blame. And then the second time within 5 minutes, and I somehow survived. So there I am, -400 points and some d!ckwad comes in saying 'Omg HotelBushranger is a tker kick him!' And I was calm and rational, explaining what had happened. But the idiot wouldn't listen! 'Look at his score!' he just kept repeating it 'Look at his score' So in the end I just told him to bugger off n stop acting like a little kid! Soon everyone else also was just saying 'Shuttup dude'!

Thought I ws shooting a I153 in a BF110. It turns out it was a J8A. Poor little plane exploded from just a few 20mm's and the pilot wasn't happy!

I have only played this game online for several months now, but although I havent killed any friendlies, I have have shot some by accident, others I have missed (thank goodness)...

Usually I try to get as close as possible (thank you, before firing, its when I realize that the person i was so eager to kill was on my side...

BUUTUTUTUT

i have been known to drop more than my fair share of ordinances on friendly targets...just the other day I was flying with my friend on bf109 vs spits...and we took stukas..we were told to head a certain heading a and bomb tanks on the EAST side of the river..

turns out I hit tanks on the WEST side of the river http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif...our tanks...
