It makes me wonder if the Illustrious was actually in an anti-submarine mode at the time - it's not so easy when there are lots of frigates in the group, all with helicopters up and dunking all over the place, and possibly a couple of frigates using towed-array sonar.

Of course, even then, it's often the norm to launch a couple of grenades just to advise the skimmers, "We're over here!" When I was in RN boats we once did an "attack" in the middle of a task group - an attack is simulated by firing a grenade for each 'torpedo launch'. One grenade landed on the focsle of the destroyer and the second grenade very nearly knocked its AS helo out of the sky just as it was taking off.

The Victoria class boats (ex-RN Upholder class) really are very quiet, though. Or at least as quiet as the old O and P Class boats in the RN.

Periscope photos from Royal Netherlands Navy sub 'Tijgerhaai' (Tigershark) on exercise in the Mediterranian in 1993. (Might me mistaking, correct me in im wrong http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

Sweet sweet tonnage indeed.
