Im having a difficult choice here. Im doing yet another repaint of the P-80, and I cant tell what one would be better suited!!! I got a book recently called "P-80 in action" and it had a profile of the glossy light grey P-80 I am making. I did a re-paint to match the profile, but I dont know if it looks correct or not. Here are renders of the two P-80's and a photo I took of a real P-80. Tell me what one looks the best. Please remember the skins are not done. God I hate skinning.

Hi Gib,

Here is a pic of a P-80 used in the Korean conflict, now sitting in Wright-Patterson AFB. Of course it isn't WWII, but unfortunately the P-80 didn't serve. Since it can only be used in "what-if" combat scenarios (although we could obviously fly transfer missions in it /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif ), it can be argued that we ought to give more of a weathered, combat look than the pristine edge we see in your photo.

I left the photo in full resolution for better detail. Hope it gives you some ideas anyway. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks for the pic, but thats of a bare aluminum aircraft. The early P-80's used an extreamly glossy light grey paint. They did this for aerodynamics. It smoothed the lines over the rivits and panel lines. The problem is, what it gained in aerodynamics, it lost in weight!!! Also, it was a pain in the rear to maintain. This paint job had to be WELL maintained, and they would have kept it in near "museum" quality. Later they ditched the paint for the aluminum job shortly after the war. What I am trying to represent is a P-80 during the war. Also, I have not painted the dirt layer yet. The P-80 is still missing a lot of details.

Right, they would have quickly learned to ditch the paint if the P-80 had actually been used in the war, so my argument is that it could have an aluminum skin as well, since we're dealing with what-if scenarios.

By the way, I liked the first one too. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Another vote for the first one.

I think Michapma's point is a good one. Since we're looking at a hypothetical war situation it's reasonable to think that the choice might have been made to simply leave them bare-metal-

nice work- I'm kind of hoping you never find a job /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif but that's kind of selfish, eh?

As it appears to me, the 1st has more working time on it.
Also, it has a warmer grey color which looks more appealing.
If you want a fair opinion, make the 2nd one the same color and detail.

The hue of the second one is closer, but the gloss of the first is better. The first looks almost like bare metal. I'd suggest seeing if you can get it whiter - like the photo, but retain the shine. Nice work on the skin.

If you blend the two main colours. Say, 80% from the topmost and 20% from the one below. I think you will get the colour you'er looking for. And sticking with the same attributes for the rest of the skin. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

The second one more closely matches the aircraft at the USAF Museum, IMHO.

Gib, have you tried to contact the USAF Museum for assistance?

I believe that they have all the paint colors on file in the restoration shop.

I am going by the color of the P80R record plane, which has the gray paint. I won't be going to the museum for a while, but if it is still an issue I might be persuaded to go down there and match the color with a Pantone book. If I still have one floating around.
