A couple weeks ago I was hosting a game at Hyper Lobby. This was the last game I hosted until recently....

On that occasion, someone accused me of trying to hack into their PC while they were connected to my server. At the time I had no idea what he was talking about. I think, as I remember, it was some members of the 401 and 402 squads that were playing that night. I quickly ended up with an empty room and did not know why.

A few days later my cable company called and said that there were numerous complaints concerning my IP address on the night in question. They said I had the "Nimda" virus and it was attempting to communicate with other peoples PC's while I was online. Apparently this was logged on some peoples firewall programs.

Well, this was immediately taken care of on my end with a complete format and reinstall of Windows, a complete update of Windows, and also an update of our antivirus software.
I am currently looking into getting a really good firewall program up and running also.

I asked the cable company how I got this virus and they claimed that it was communicated through email or possibly, since windows was not fully updated, it was able to get onto my hardrive simply through the internet. Apparently some of the latter updates would have prevented this from occuring.

I felt sick to my stomache over this. This could be compared to having to tell someone you have a communicable disease.

Since the computer in question is my brothers and not mine, I have no way of knowing exactly how we got this virus. I recently sold my PC and will be building a new one worthy of having IL-2 FB on its hard drive.

If anyone has any suggestions for a good firewall program, please let me know. I would need to be able to host online games while it is up and running. I am not a genious when it comes to this stuff.

I hope I have not p***** anyone off. I also hope my server will not be boycotted because of this event if I decide to host more maps at Hyper Lobby.

Sincerely,

Popov

Nice post, Good job getting it cleaned up.

You could try Zone alarm. They have a free version that is very easy to use. Just do a google search for it. I use it and I have never had a problem.

Good luck!

Yes, I seem to recall that night.
I wouldn't worry about it much. There has been no talk of it in the squad that I have heard, no inter squad e-mails or posts on our web site.
If it was a 401 or 402 member that was accusing you he has surely kept it to himself!!!
And if it was one of us, again, don't worry about it. We're a forgiving bunch. We all know the pros and cons that come with using these computers.
I have personally flown in your games on several occations and thought they were quite good and I would certainly fly in one of your servers again.

Salute, Sir.

You could always try kerio personal firewall, another free one, from http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_download.html if you have never used a firewall befor, get ready for lots of pop ups from which ever wall you choose, be sensible what you allow and disallow through the wall, the longer its there, the less it asks you for permission, persevere :-)

I remember reading that the only really secure firewall is a hardware firewall, but I couldn't tell you much more about it. Hardware firewalls are much more expensive, and apparently they are useful especially for multi-operating-system networks.

I use ZoneAlarm, but it's more just to keep out the majority of attacks; I have the feeling that if someone wanted to persevere in attacking my computer they'd just have to find it when it's up and go for it. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-sad.gif However, for the majority of scan attacks—and it sounds to me like that's what you were a victim of—it probably is going to do the job. Just keep it updated!

That reminds me...

Nice post. Well, I use Sygate Personal Firewall. It is free and easy to use. You can get it on: http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf/spf_ov.htm
Also, there is a good site to learn about firewalls and security:

Hope it'll help.

Look up www.sofaware.com (http://www.sofaware.com) - they make small hardware firewalls based on Checkpoint Firewall 1, which is the firewall software many corporates use. They are quite expensive but at least you won't have to install anything on your machine and they are pretty secure. Damn easy to set up as well.

At the moment I'm using Zone Alarm,it's pretty good and free.I've also got Nortons Firewall 2003,it's excellent but it can be an absolute pain in the backside with some programs.

That's my recommendation. And while you are at it, get Norton Utilities.

One click, and you can update all the Norton software on your computer, virus definitions, program updates and patches (oops, I said patch), the whole works.

You get what you pay for. Go with Norton.
