I'm sure someone here used it a few weeks ago in one of the threads. It's been bugging me ever since. Agh! What IS that film???
I know it, but it's eluding me...........

Apologies for being OT again...

Odd. It feels so familiar to me, but I've never seen the film. I guess it must have been quoted AT me loads of times. (for some reason perhaps http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif)

Boxduty, if you haven't seen Kelly's Heros, you MUST rent it or buy it. It's one of the best movies ever made. Not historically accurate, but absolutely hilarious, with moments of tense drama mixed in.

This was the favourite phrase of "Oddball" the hippy tank commander in "Kellys Heroes" played by Donald Sutherland. It was normally aimed at his long suffering mechanic "Moriarty" played by Gavin MacLeod who seemed to be trying to fit into the hippy lifestyle of his C.O. but reality keeps getting in the way:

"Always with the negative waves Moriarty! Why don't you just dig how beautiful it is here!"

Top film. Total escapism but still great fun!

Sutherland played "Hawkeye Pierce" in Robert Altmans "M*A*S*H" released the same year. Two very different but superb performances.

Other "Oddball" quotes:

"Woof! Woof! Thats my dog impression"
"Woof! Woof! Woof! Thats my other dog impression"

Oddball:"Tanks broke man, they're trying to fix it"
Oddball:"Hey, I just ride 'em, I don't know what makes them go!"

A classic scene is where they are looking desperately for an intact bridge to cross a river. They find one and Oddball observes it with his binoculars:
Oddball:"ITS STILL UP!!" the crew cheer,at this point a USAAF fighter bomber swoops in and promptly demolishes it with a well placed bomb!
Oddball: "No it ain't!! You see what all those negative waves did Moriarty!!!"

Great film.

Uh, there is the not inconsiderable chance any of a couple million American '60's people still lurking around could have used that expression---it was common as "don't be a downer" in them thar days. I'll suddenly break into '60's speak at times---it's shocking to realize it is now anachronistic. Sigh.

The whole oddball think in Kellies heroes was hilarious.

The movie is one of the more historically accurate WWII films around, right down to the tank tactics, (well the "Tigers" were modified modern tanks .. Leopard from memory .. but hey where do you get 3 Tigers from these days) and fair in the middle of it is Oddball straight out of 'nam talking about negative waves and firing paint from his Sherman.

One of my favourite movies.

Awe man.

Nobody said nothing bout no Tie-gers! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

The Tiger was a fairly good fake made on a T-34 series chassis. Good, but not big enough to be really intimidating.

06-27-2006, 01:47 AM
T-34 indeed and great job, considering dimensional (turret too much forward) and looks of wheels (one row instead of staggered) limitations. When seen from other angle than side and if one forgets those wheels, it looks quite Tigerish http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif! Btw. IIRC the movie was shot in Yugoslavia, so T-34s were easily available for 'conversion'.

Friends all tried to warn me
But I held my head up high
All the time they warned me
But I only passed them by
They all tried to tell me
But I guess I didn't care
I turned my back and
Left them standing there

All the burning bridges that have fallen after me
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everyone I left behind each time I closed the door
Burning bridges lost forevermore

Joey tried to help me find a job
A while ago
When I finally got it I didn't want to go
The party Mary gave for me
When I just walked away
Now there's nothing left for me to say

All the burning bridges that have fallen after me
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everyone I left behind each time I closed the door
Burning bridges lost forevermore

Years have passed and I keep thinking
What a fool I've been
I look back into the past and
Think of way back then
I know that I lost everything I thought I that could win
I guess I should have listened to my friends

All the burning bridges that have fallen after me
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everyone I left behind each time I closed the door
Burning bridges lost forevermore

Naw, it's the lyrics to a song thats on the soundtrack

06-27-2006, 02:45 PM
It's a 1960's song for a 1960's war movie with a 1960's mentality.

"That is the lousiest, stinking most awful stupid joke, and you're always pulling that stinking awful stupid joke..."

Some quotes from the movie http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oddball: Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
Moriarty: ****!

Crapgame: Hey, Oddball, this is your moment of glory. And you're chickening out!
Oddball: To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three tigers.

Oddball: Hi, man.
Big Joe: What are you doing?
Oddball: I'm drinking wine and eating cheese, and catching some rays, you know.
Big Joe: What's happening?
Oddball: Well, the tank's broke and they're trying to fix it.
Big Joe: Well, then, why the hell aren't you up there helping them?
Oddball: [chuckles] I only ride 'em, I don't know what makes 'em work.

Oddball: We see our role as essentially defensive in nature. While our armies are advancing so fast and everyone's knocking themselves out to be heroes, we are holding ourselves in reserve in case the Krauts mount a counteroffensive which threatens Paris... or maybe even New York. Then we can move in and stop them. But for 1.6 million dollars, we could become heroes for three days.

Big Joe: [shouting in the radio] Look, Mulligan! I don't think I'm getting through to you! You're dropping your damn barrage on our position! The reason you can't hear me is because you're firing your mortars at your end, and they're dropping here, on our end! No, the Krauts are not here! We're here! Mulligan, your bombs are coming down on our head! I don't know where the Krauts are! Just lift your ******* barrage! Over!
Big Joe: [shouting to the captured German Colonel] Look! We're not worried about the German army, we've got enough troubles of our own. To the right General Patton, to the left the British Army, to the rear our own ******* artillery, and besides all that it's raining. And the only good thing to say about the weather: it keeps our air corps from blowing us all to Hell because its too lousy to fly, versteh?

Big Joe: [disgustedly] It's Mulligan. What the hell does he want?
Pvt. Little Joe: He says he's sorry.
Big Joe: [muttering] Sorry son of a *****.
Big Joe: [a mortar round lands close, covering everyone in dust]
Big Joe: Mulligan, you son of a *****...
