Yes - I have a book called 'Cockpit' that features photographs and labeled cockpit diagrams of many of the better-known WWII aircraft and there were indeed lights.

in-game, the default key to toggle cocpit lights, is "Ctrl-L"

I've wondered if the "L" shaped strip in the mustang cockpit really illuminated w/ the rest of the instruments or was just expedient to make it that way in-game.

There were two flourescent lights (sometimes one on the floor) in F-51Ds (essentially the same as P-51D in most resepcts)

I use the F-51D example because I have the pilot manual in front of me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The two lights were on each side of the cockpit. Colored filters could be used in them

The light 'bar' in the Mustang in FB...may be actually a reflective effect from the lights. Or, it could actually have illuminated in P-51s but in F-51s this was superceded. I so far haven't gotten may hands on a P-51 manual

Tip:: I you have not tried it, fly the Fiat CR.42 at sunset or after dark and turn on the cockpit lights. CR.42 has the most Sexy cockpit lighting in the game. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

P-39 and 63 look like they just have an incandescent 40 watt bulb hanging behind the pilot when you turn on cockpit lights.

I wonder if the map light works in the P-38? Have to check that out...

I tried the CTRL + L thingy but it look a bit odd. A little too modern. I assumed is was an added aid to help novice pilots like myself.

Oh, make no mistake- that line that is angled and bisects the instrument panel in the FB P-51 cockpit does really exist. It's clearly shown in my manual and I have seen the cockpit of the one in the Smithsonian in the book "At the controls". That line is really there, have no doubt. Actually, the FB cockpit is very very, very close to what the real thing looks like.
