Why did so many of the earlier 109s (E series/F series) have yellow noses? Im assuming its so the Germans could more easily tell their ACs apart from the enemy's, but Im not sure. Im not an expert on German aircraft...its just that when i look at the the historical skins made for the later 109s like the G10/14 amd K4 i dont see the yellow noses. I dont know why they stopped with the yellow.... except that the yellow doesnt exactly help in the interests of camoflage.....Any imput would be appreciated.

Yeah Im really bored.... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'm pretty sure it was for plane ID. I never use them.

No, the yellow nose was not universal. The "Yellow Nose Bastards" were the members of JG26, the Abbeville Boys. They were the most renound squadron with yellow noses.

Yellow noses did help with I.D.s, and was also seen on some FW190's. Some squads used some sort of yellow upfront, but some also used checkered noses, spiral spinners and such.

not the question you asked - but i think some of the yellow - maybe round the tail end of the fuselage denoted the fact they were fighters assigned to the eastern front
