Just started out on my career and have been using the ****'Okane method of manually targeting - found my first lone destroyer and after a few attempts got two torpedoes exactly where I wanted them....Excellent http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So off I went looking for a convoy and boy did I find one! I was smack bang in the middle of it, ships everywhere but quickly realised I was way out of my depth. I havent a clue about how to try and attack multiple targets, by the time I had done any calculations on the first, the first, and all the rest had buggered off!

OK I realise my position was rubbish and I needed to move out abit but if I was in an ideal position how would I go about it ? Realise practise will make perfect but need a good starting point http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I think you have already found out that the best way to attack a convoy is to get into a good position ahead of them and let them come to you.

At first contact plot their course and speed and figure out a good intercept point.
Use the three minute rule for this. Being in a good position is key to a successful attack.
Three minute rule. Pick a ship and mark it's position, wait 3 minutes and mark the new position.
Measure the distance between marks and that gives you speed, 100 yards = 1 Kt. 500 yd. = 5 Kt. etc.
I do this three times and than draw a line through all X,s and that is the course. You already have course and speed the rest is easy (almost).

Pay close attention to where the escorts are and plan an attack that will give you a clear shot.
In clear calm conditions I'll trail a convoy till night to improve my chances for a clean shot.

With O'Kane you can shoot from longer ranges and make a clean escape, often will be a able to go around the convoy and attack from the other side while the DD are looking for you.

I very seldom try for more than two ships in an attack, by than they are maneuvering and hard to hit.
Shoot one on low speed and the second on high speed, time it right and all torpedoes will hit at about the same time.

To be in the middle of a convoy is a lot of fun but you need to be able to come up with firing solutions very quickly to succeed. Takes some experience to pull off.

Good luck and good hunting.

Magic...Good idea on that slow torps first, and fast for second target. Keeps them from scattering before their time....
On working out a solution for additional tagrets, you don't have to set speed or AOB again, as long as they pretty much follow the original course. Keep the TDC open on the range/bearing setting, and move your periscope to the next target, and reset R&B on the TDC (click twice to send), and you're all set to fire on the next target. This'll work for one or two additional targets (mostly) before the convoy really scatters and you have to break off the attack before the tin cans get to you. If you get away relatively unscathed, shadow the convoy and find a new intercept point, and do it all over again.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

When I find those large 20-50 ship convoys, I try to be patient. Obvious do your first attack as mentioned above, then it's one target at a time and because ships are zigging, going in circles, changing speeds..O Kane ain't gonna work. The good thing is if you're in the middle, escorts have a hard time finding you and you have time to attack targets one at a time at fairly close range.

If you get in convoys with lots of loaded merchants that mill and get close, you can hit one ship and it's explosion may damage or sink multiple ships. The failure is you only get credit for the one you torped, but sometimes escorts blow up from nearby explosions and I'll take it.

Sometimes instead of wasting torps at guess shots it's best to wait for a good target to come to you and in a large convoy eventually they will.

Also try shooting at lapping targets, sometimes you can't miss.

You'll learn multiple shooting tactics to deal with each situation.

Sometimes instead of wasting torps at guess shots it's best to wait for a good target to come to you and in a large convoy eventually they will. That's good advice Wolfe. Though I'm just as guilty as the next guy, in taking risky shots at multiple or extra juicy targets, more often than not, I line up my shots on the most probable kills.
Of course, as one's experience becomes more tuned, those once risky shots become more easy. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yea, the worse thing to do is set up a AOB on a turning ship, it will totally change before the torp gets there, at best you have to set it where you think it will be when the torp gets there..

Course in some 50 ship convoys with 30 ships milling, sometimes I'll just let em fly in the direction at 0 speed cuz they usually circle.
