Things that MAW does that are in this wish list thread "What three pieces of Graphical Eye Candy would you love to see in BoB"

Your pilot slides the canopy/pops the canopy and then you see him climb out/fall out.

the possibility to pull the cord manually.

Id like to see a little flame from the exhaust.

Flares you can fire

Night-fighter missions would be interesting too with missions requiring you to look out for exhaust flames

Flocks of birds...(very dangerous, and beautiful)

Smoke/bomb explosions that responds to the weather/environment/target. (explosions on a fuel dump look different then an
open field or building or concrete.

I want to see smoke bilowing from the exhaust stacks, when a pilot pushes the throttle to the stops.

Ground crew chatting, spanners and tool kits clanging, tractors and lorries moving away.

The ability to lean, especially when looking behind.

aircraft that reflect light, and so easy to see as rl

Those who have 1.10,do you have a cockpit in the maryland? The Bleinhem doesn´t have any textures on the sides and rear.
Can you alter the fov so it stick to it when you restat a game.I´d like to have it two zoom clicks in.I guess you can set it in config but don´t know where.

Thanks

Word is the Maryland is an AI that slipped through & will get a cockpit in the 30/45 day patch. Don't really know about changing eyepoints etc.

EDIT: Just saw a netwings post that the Bleinhem cockpit is 99% done & will be in the patch.

James, I disagree : a torrent makes much more sense, otherwise I would still not be playing MAW. In the torrent programme you used, there must be a directory where all your torrents download go; to find it, go to the "preferences" or "config settings" of this programme to know what is the default directory that was used.
Once there read the readme (VERY important), there are a few things to know, but installation is very straightforward. I also encourage you to read the MAW forums at http://forums.netwings.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=26
they'll be able to answer your questions there as it the dev's forums.

Lets see now. I DL'd it clicked on two install files then played the sim.

Other guys will have a DVD delivered to their door, they will put it into their CD/DVD drive click on two install files which will install it in the correct sequence automatically & play the sim.

Right now I have Il-2 through Pacific Fighters including all the patches. I had to either go to the store to buy or download what was required, then I had to install them in the correct sequence on my system.

Give me a break & pity me with the IL-2 install not MAW.

Like CFS3/MAW or not, hate M$ or not, love Oleg as the Sun God or not, MAW is a free sim that is about as hard to install as turning on your PC, Be Sure.

Look, I am 54, been using computers for the sum total of three years, and I was able to bang through the download on RapidShare, and do the install almost like the proverbial falling off a log---far easier than the huge task of multiple disks and many patches we had to do with IL-2 before PESHKA and 46. If I can do it handily, a three-yr-old can!

Let's not jump on MAW over the download.

Maybe breaking it up helps if a connection drops & you want a clean/safe restart from a known point.

Maybe it helps if some files get corrupted in transmission so you only have to redo a 100mb section instead of the whole 1,500mb all over again.

Stuff like that.

DL speeds are all over the place but the BitTorrent is getting faster as more guys get MAW & start to upload files. Some squadrons with private FTP sites for their members are getting 2-3 minutes a section & most are under 4.

As for being sensitive it was pretty clear, subsequently support by your last post, that you were just taking a shot even though you did not know what you were talking about since the install is nothing like OFF & breaking up a large file for transmission is plain common sense.

whats with the 15 different 100Mb files I see in the download section of the Rapidshare link? How long will this take to download on my cable/broadband connection?

They broke it up to ease the download because you may have broadband but some people don't. If you save all these files in the same folder (what's so difficult about that???), the installer will compile everything. You just have to read the readme for some basic instructions, double-click on the installer exe, "install", "I accept", "next", "finish" (all the basic instructions of every installer out there) and voil, MAW is ready to be started.

You may have to make some tweaking to get MAW to run as smooth as you like it, but every sim requires some tweaking.

James, maybe you have some hotmail account or things like that, and maybe the forum software at Netwings doesn't allow this type of account to block spammers (just guessing there).
It took me 4h9mn to download the torrent file.

You'll need to open the torrent file in a torrent manager such as uTorrent.
http://www.medairwar.com/maw/main.htm
All of the instructions are on the Download page of the MAW Website:

uTorrent will look after the download for you, but it may take a long while.

Hope this helps.

Wellington humps Benghazi

I played the Wellington mission against Benghazi in the North African missions. I set the Axis AA capability way too low so that at the altitude my Wimpey was flying it was safe. I decided to dive down to the deck and attack the docks at low altitude where each bomb would count. There I discovered the flak was potent.

My initial approach to the city:

In the midst of the searchlights:

Diving:

Heading across the docks; flak hammering:

Two images from a distance of what my pattern did to the target:

After several false starts I got everything to work late last night & judging from several missions this is quite a nice sim...really so much more than came from the original box.I can't say I've played it enough to really be knowledgable , but in all ways saveone it is very pretty even played on a 5 year old rig...my one criticism? Some of the cockpits are a bit ....ummm...crude.The Hurricane & P-40 aren't bad, but the 109e I flew was not up to either IL-2 or BoBII standard & the bf-110 was absolutely bare bones. As I said this may be due to my computer or just a faulty load , its too early to tell...maybe after my PC has cooled down after a day & a half of trying to load this thing everything will have improved..we'll see.
It does seem as if I can say this: This new MAW ,like BoBII,isn't Il-2 FB/PF ...it seems to be in lots of ways very different , but it really is alot better than CFS3...thats for sure!

bzhyoyo
07-03-2007, 09:36 AM
The Hurricane & P-40 aren't bad, but the 109e I flew was not up to either IL-2 or BoBII standard & the bf-110 was absolutely bare bones.

Err, I don't agree with the bf109 ! It's one of the finest VCs I've ever flown in ! Here is a pic of it for everyone to judge.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n179/Cacciatore_di_stelle/Emil7.jpg

Some cockpits are not finished that's why they're crude currently but seeing the modeler's work at Netwings for the bf110, I can assure you it's going to be one of the best VCs in MAW once they're completed.

http://home.arcor.de/m.pommerien/img/Bf110E_20.jpg

As to some VCs, they're only functional ones as the planes are mainly meant to be AI only (many French planes are in that case).

On the whole I agree though, it's a mixed bag, but you can find some pearls in it.

jamesdietz
07-03-2007, 10:12 AM
I may have chosen the wrong 109!!! Like I said I only played a short time & it may be my pc...the 110 panel to come looks FAB...the one I flew only had an instrument panel & nothing else...
Are there differences model to model?

leitmotiv
07-03-2007, 10:47 AM
Hm, I haven't tried the 109s yet, but that one in the screenshot was spectactular. Some aircraft have fantastic cockpits: Wellington (it is the masterpiece, I think), Hurricanes, MS 406, Potez 63.11, SM 79, to name some. The Breguet 693 is very good but it doesn't have its gunsight yet. The Bf 110E's is not finished but what is there looks good, ditto for the Blenheim I, and the Maryland. The LeO 451 is flyable but has no cockpit at all yet. The poor Ju 88A-4 is still stuck with the terrible CFS3 Ju 88A-4 cockpit. I was not impressed by the Do 17Z cockpit. The He 111H cockpit is OK. The Battle's is passable, as is the Swordfish's. The Fulmar's is horrible. The CR 32's is good, as I recall. It is a mixed bag. A quibble: I really miss my rear-view mirrors in the Hurricanes!

bzhyoyo

Posts & pictures at Netwings by the developers say that the Lystander, Bf-110, Blenheim & a few other cockpits are being done. As was said its a mixed bag since different producers have different skill levels.

I have the AvHistory 1% Korea era Meteor & the cockpit is equal to or greater then the one in the MAW 109.

I am encouraged by the fact that the 109, Meteor & a some other cockpits are outstanding.

This says to me there is no a limitation in the CFS3 software to re-produce really great 3D cockpits that work with 6DOF devices like Track Ir3/4. Leaning over & turning your head to the side to see behind you is very cool.

The question is how important is a pristine cockpit in a plane you will never get to fly in any sim if you have to wait for one before you can have the plane.

These planes, even the ones with the AI type cockpits, fly so well it would be a crime for them to be held back.

I am running the 93.71 Nivida XP driver in my card, the newest TrackIr driver on a TrackIr-3 & DirectX 9c. Very smooth & very high frame rates on a 22" wide screen except for Malta harbor so far.

The harbor has a lot of detail, moving ships & flak which takes a bite out of the FPS.

I saw some of the players post it as an issue & hope they come up with a fix for it.

Thing that really knocked my socks off is the native 1680X1050X32 support by the sim. A solid non-stretched picture.

Looks like a very very high quality cockpit for an FSX airplane. That is incredible modeling. As far as I am concerned my HD belongs to MAW, BOB, and FSX.

On the cockpits I just saw a late netwings post that they are commiting to 4 Mk.I and Mk.II Westland Lysanders with first class cockpits. 2 RAF 1 RAAF & 1 Greek.

They will also have functional leading edge flaps/slats? for very slow flying ability & cow pasture landings.

As for cow pastures they have cows, goats camels & sea birds in MAW in addition to the infantry.

Tracking the camels by driving a VW bug next to them I clocked them at 4mph. Wonder if that is 1% http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Amazing. Considering the Lysanders were not big players in the campaign, this is a huge gift horse---or camel, or goat, or whatever. By the way, r, happen to know where the Whitley is? Must be stashed in a campaign. Whitleys weren't used in N. Africa---where do they come in?

This is an amazing WIP. One guy is working on coordinated tank battles. Some screen shots & a Utube? movie. Its not a tank sim but you do get a feel of war on the desert floor. You need to look quick as the tanks over run a position just prior to the 2 minute mark & roll past some KIA infantry.

These guys have more energy and inventiveness than Bart Simpson on Ritalin. Now they are extending into tanks! I'll give them credit, they do not have the pristine battlefield of the generic tank sim. That one looked suitably dusty, smoky, and nasty. What next? Battleship gunnery?

LS put it eloquently.

Looks just like a Hurricane IID run---aiming with the two .303s, and firing as fast as you can with 40s. Damned impressive. I like all the dust hiding the tanks, and all the dust kicked up by the guns. These guys want to seriously immerse the user.

Still at work, but I've got to ask - is there a Hs129?

Will_Hunter
07-06-2007, 02:47 AM
There is a Henschel Hs 129 being built for MAW right now.

Somebody earlier on mentioned battle ships...MAW features an enormous number of historically accurate ships, boats and submarines from The Royal Navy, German Navy and Italian Navy and later the USN. Some are drivable. E-boat and MTB fighting is possible. I'm sure the maritime side of MAW will be developed even further as time goes on.

Will.

Great stuff, but for some reason my PoV is somewhere on the cockpit floor http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Likewise with the British campaign and the Lysander.

Single missions give me a CTD every time when I try to access the breifing screen.

Any thoughts?

They responded to this question with

"CTD in QC is caused because the uisel.xml file included in 1.1 is referencing aircraft and missions that no longer exist, due to name changes from 1.0."

We were told a fix is being done but I don't know when it will be released.

Have not done any campaigns so I have no idea. The Storch is OK in free flight.

The Lysander does not show up on the plane list. Did not know it was in the game yet.

The DR guys at netwing are posting that it is getting a cockpit & will be in the patch.

Did you try the Storch in free flight or whatever it is that the call it.

Fi 156 Storchmeisters should be on the shelves in both the German and Italian sections for Quick Combat. If they aren't, something is definitely wrong!

The VW comment made me try something that turned out to be way cool.

Select UK aircraft then the Chevy truck in dogfight mode.

Click on a Tobruk runway & a Storch if you have it or some other lightly to unarmed plane as the enemy.

Start the mission, takes a little while to come up.

Start the engine & head out toward the front lines, rudder steers the truck...I will say no more then watch out for the steep drop-offs.

When I start a Jerry bomber campaign I start off with the Storch. Great stuff, but for some reason my PoV is somewhere on the cockpit floor http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Likewise with the British campaign and the Lysander. It sounds like you're playing the Greece 1940 campaign. That one is designed only to be played as Greece or Italy, however British and German players are included due to a requirement by the CFS3 campaign engine. This is mentioned both in the campaign briefing notes and in the campaign documentation (which you will find tucked away in your campaign directory). A similar issue affects the North Africa 1940 campaign.

Edit: Since neither the Fi-156 nor the Lysander are meant to be flown in the campaign, you end up flying what is known as an AI version, which does not include a virtual cockpit. That's why you're staring through the floorboards.

As for the Fiesler, you will find a flyable version in the German aircraft menu. However, you'll need to scroll down a page or two by clicking near the bottom of the list.

Edit: As for the Lysander, there is not yet a flyable version available. Non-flyable aircraft are generally suppressed from the menu. As will all things, stay tuned to the MAW forum at Netwings for news.
