Annoying behavior!
Brief description: I'm on version 4.05m and at last got some time between studying, and found almost impossible to have a pleasing dogfight.
Specially against bf's, the AI (i accept that in a realistic way) doesn't engage at all in dogfighting, just go up like crazy. I normally use weaker planes... so boring chase is the result.
If i use a better plane, it become annoyingly easy to shot it down. =(
In wich version AI start to use this behavior so hardcore? I updated many versions at a time (know that isn't the best way) so i don't know where it started.
I'm sure in 2.01-2.04 i had memorable dogfights.
Thanks in advance

PF 4.01m through 4.03m were pretty decent in respect to the AI problems you're refering to, Armatian.

I felt in 4.04 and higher that the issues became a little to unrealistic.
If you continue to use the higher versions of patches you just need to be more patient.

I'd have a very hard time going back to early patches of IL2/PF because of the marked improvememnts in FM.

Try with rookies and work your way up. Find out which offers the most enjoyable experience.

They have gotten "better" which means largely that they are harder to kill and behave like the better pilots online who are patient and will climb for a while before pouncing. They also I think cheat without any worry for overheat or engine boost settings.

Thanks, i found that hunting spitfires in the bf's remains interesting, unfortunately there will be no more hurricane-barely-shooting down bf vet/ace.
Tempting bf to get in our tail, evade those huge cannons and shooting them down when they pass by is a little too scary to do, and my skill got too low, and my hardware is from year 2000, no kidding =P
I got in the yak9 and teach those climbmaniatic IA-Bf's a lesson.

The AI in 4.04 and 4.05 is totally porked. I think you are noticing the 109 because the AI can run 100% prop pitch indefinitely without overheat or engine damage.

I have found that turning overheat off helps and having your dogfights at lower altitudes helps as well. Like Ice said, try rookie...this goes a little to the other way of being too easy but for me, the game was ruined when 109's began flying circles around Mustangs at 25,000ft and above... no immersion in that.

Best bet is get your hands on 4.08...what little I've flown against the AI, there does not seem to be the violent negative G manuevers, and the vector rolling that increases speed along with the dive and zoom climb of death.

I find in 4.05, Armatian, that chasing them is a waste of time.

Instead try breaking off and reverse direction. The AI will almost always turn back to try and engage. Then you have plenty of time to set up a shot.

They do not shy away from head on passes, so watch out for that.
Get 'em turning and they are yours http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Thanks for the input, nonetheless, i've found that it is a contained problem, around bf109, or powerful planes like Dornier 335.
The sugestion to turn back and tempt AI is good, but normally i use inferior planes for challenge, so is scary =P
I can't get 4.08, you need IL-2 1946, i have also a P3-733 with a geforce 2 GTS (not that bad either, runs better than a FX 5200) so end of road for this pc, i'll save and wait to buy a good pc next year (i'm from argentina so have to pay three times the price =O ) and luckily SOW will be there

And I thought I'm imagining things...
Wanted to perfect my shooting skills on a P-51, so I went to QMB, and no matter which 109 I took as enemy (even b4), they just kept on climbing like crazy. I'm barely holding my A/C level, and they just zoom up and catch up with me from behind with no problems.

Yes, truly unengaging to fly against. Even when you climb against them in pretty good planes (like yak9, even mig3 wich should be a match when reach 6500m) they have energy to climb fast and even do short almost vertical climbs while getting around you.
The only way to have them is to climb right away from start, and in a very good plane, turn fast and gave them a bullet shower =P

You know, I'm hearing a lot of troubles that come
from the later patches for PF.

When I installed PF as a standalone with none of
the patches, I thought it worked pretty well. Now
that I have a merged installation with ALL the
patches, I'm also experiencing some of the troubles
I've seen people discussing in this forum.

So, is it possible to uninstall the patches?
Would add/remove programs erase the updates?

Thanks

BoB 2 "wings of victory" Excellent AI! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif but don't tell anyone here I told you so.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, but the planes dissappear in BoB2. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I like BoB but I've experienced this on a number of occasions.

I shouldn't make it out to be a huge deal. It doesn't happen on every mission, but often enough that it bothers you. When's it gonna happen again?

The easiest: just install over what version you have the patch which suited you the best. Example: I run now 4.08 merged. If I want to go down to say 4.03 merged I just run 4.03 merged patch file.

Not in Bob 2 2.5 that I have ever seen or ever heard of from others in the whole entire shockwave forum. Sounds like the old BOB version. More the trouble is when someone is on your tail THEY WON'T DISAPPEAR AND THEY BRING BRING BUDDIES TO HELP OUT! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Maybe you downloaded the Il-2 "ufo patch" that everyone talks about where zeros can outdive P-47's and P-38 and ai planes can always follow you no matter what they could actually do in real life..

Sorry but the AI in IL-2 is sooo predictable and dumb. Give me Bob2 anyday over it. Bob 2 is always unpredictable and totally emmersive and that's what makes it so good..

Now if Shockwave could come up with a Europe air war version I would be in pig heaven.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Thanks lowfighter! The "wobbles" are largely gone now. What remains of any wobbliness is probably me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Now if I can only fly this mustang properly. I'm really struggling (read: stalling out) with it a lot. Touchy little beast! hehehe. I'm far more comfortable in a corsair, F6f, or even P-40.

Well cry baby Bob 2.6 will take care of all your troubles. Totally great support at Shockwave unlike here. I have never experianed what you say but a very few people have. Coming out in a week or so. Then you can find something else to diss bob on.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

LOL.

Don't take my posts so personal. It's not like I went and did a dump all over the fine folks who have worked on BoB 2. I certainly didn't disparage you.

In other posts I've said I've liked BoB quite a lot. The Shockwave forums are a testament to a great community, and I WILL download the 2.6 patch. I do AND will continue to enjoy BoB:WoV.

Thanks for the update on the patch. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
