Hey All,
After a five year hiatus from flight sims, I have been bitten by the bug again. So I went and purchased a new HOTAS (My old Thrusmaster HOTAS) was analog. My new gear is CH and it is coming with a copy of IL2 and I purchased Pacific Fighters seperately.
Now my problem. I convinced an old flying buddy to do the same. However he is not much interested in IL2 as he is PF. Therefore he is installing PF standalone. Reading these boards, I gather that I have to install mine standalone as well in order to go head to head with him. Is it possible for me to install PF and IL2 each standalone or does it force a merged install? I would like to play around in both myself.

Thanks in advance for your input.

PS Can someone clue me into the best place to start obtaining and managing skins for both programs?

Thanks a bunch

you can have them both. Apart from private games with friends you won't find much online for PF. It's the merged installation that has over 95% of the online population (judging by hyperlobby). But as i said, you can have them both (merged and stand alone) installed.

Thanks for the info. Not sure yet if I am going to get back into the online Head to Head community yet. Did that for many years and it requires some dedication and work to stay competative enough with the folks that frequent those arenas. Guess I will see how quickly the rust comes off after a few good hours of practice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thanks Again,

The current online installation of choice is:

IL2 Forgotten Battles +
Ace Expansion Pack +
Pacific Fighters.

The IL2 Sturmovik game that comes with the CH Gear is not mergable with the other games in the series.

If you do decide to go all out, you can run as many different versions as you like, see this article (http://www.airwarfare.com/guides/multivers.htm)

For patches see: http://www.3dgamers.com/games/pacificfighters/downloads/ for Pacific Fighters (pf_patch303.exe and pf_patch401.exe for the standalone install, pf_patch303m.exe & pf_patch401m.exe for the full merged installation), http://www.3dgamers.com/games/il2sturmovik2/downloads/ for Forgotten Battles / Ace Expansion Pack patches (1.22 for FB standalone, or patchil2_aep_201.exe & aep_patch204.exe for FB/AEP merged version) and for the IL2 Sturmovik game see http://www.3dgamers.com/games/il2sturmovik/downloads/ (you'll want 1.1a and 1.2 (1.2ov is optional but requires the other two patches)).

Thanks Tully!
LOL I guess I will be buying more software then http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Got my install working yesterday (PF standalone) and worked through graphic issues (white squares instead of clouds on perfect) and some other weird issues. Now trying to get used to my new HOTAS setup. I like them ok, but I sure do miss my Thrustmaster F22 Pro and TQS set up. Pity they have analog connectors even though I did upgrade them to the digital chip. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif The CH rudders however are very nice. Better than the Thrustmaster.

Thanks for your help!

If you've been out of the loop so long that you need to buy new equipment; then you really should consider Track IR.

The games haven't changed much in five years (they've evolved a whole lot tho'); and the same goes for joysticks; but Track IR is something very new we didn't have five years ago; and in my mind is as revolutionary as the first joysticks were in their time.

Regarding Track IR, I have looked at it and it does have some appeal, however that is one of those things I would love to try before I buy. Not sure I could get used to it. Just curious, what happens to your field of view when you turn your head to look at the dog/child but are trying to keep one eye on the screen? My guess is that's not possible anymore and your view would shift with your head correct?

Thanks

i only have freelook at the time but you can bind a key to shut off the tracking ability if you want to lock the view , center yourself then keystroke it back on! Not much trouble at all.

Yes, Track-IR does have a toggle to turn tracking on/off. I tend to turn it off when landing, on final approach, to reduce the possibility of any head movements causing me to align the aircraft incorrectly.

Track-IR does make flying much more immersive, although it did take me quite some time to get used to it.
