Does anyone know if there's any current thinking at Ubisoft/Maddox Games about creating an Eastern Front tank simulator? Given the amazing aircraft and submarine sims, I can't think of anyone better suited and I really hope they're considering it- I'm seriously itching to take a Tiger out for a spin http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Haha! I can already imagine the flame wars about overmodelled-JS2 vs overmodelled-JadgPanthers on the boards.

The load times for the ISU-152 is too fast!

The penetration for the KwK43 is overmodelled!

The Tiger's turret turns too slow!

Now that we got the Maus, I would like a flying turtle!

Probably- but the problem with that is? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'd actually expect it to be a whole lot easier to get such details correct given the specific data that exists on them. The 8,8cm KwK43 L/71 Pzgr.39/43 will penetrate 165mm of homogenous, rolled steel armor plate with a hardness of 80-90 kg/mm2 (Brinell 235-265) set at an angle of 30-degrees from horizontal; the Tiger's turret rotated 360-degrees in 60 seconds, the Königstiger's, when the hydraulic traverse was set on high, in 19 seconds at an engine speed 2000rpm, 25 seconds at 1500rpm and 36 seconds at 1000rpm. The Tiger's 8,8cm KwK36 L/56 using Pzgr.39/1 ammunition and shooting from a side angle of 30-degrees could penetrate a Sherman's gun mantlet at 200m, a Cromwell's at 2700m, a Churchill's at 1400m, a T34-85's at 400m and an IS-2's at 100m; A Tiger's mantlet, at 30-degrees, could not be penetrated by the 75mm M3 with M61 ammunition at any range, nor the 6-pdr APCBC, or 85mm S43 APBC/HE; the 76mm M1A1 with M62 ammuntion can penetrate only at <100m, and the 122mm A19 APBC/HE at <500m- and so on, and so on...

Not so easy to argue with formal test data actually unless the reference gets the numbers wrong or something http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Damn, now I REALLY want to go punch holes in some T34s http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Have you tried the panzers in Red Orchestra yet? Well neither have I for that matter - I have the game but I've only done some offline infantry practice so far. But anyway, they tell me the tank thing is excellent as well...

It's coming and it's an hard core tank sim (russian developers off course) based on the East Front. It looks fantastic!

I'll just have to make sure I don't let you come within 500m of me- maybe knock you out at 3000m just to be safe? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif There's a wartime report of an Elefant of sPzJägKp 614 knocking out a T34 at 4500m so... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Thanks for the recommendations all- I'm definitely interested to see the Russian offering- those screenshots are pretty impressive

Sweet- a bit of a shame they chose Kharkov 1942 since so many of the cooler vehicles are rather later than that (and that RAL7021 Dunkelgrau is ugly), but it looks like a cool game.

I have admit the T-34 vs. Tiger look's like it's going to be a Winner in the Tank Vs Tank games.

But with the Steel Fury Demo... watch out for the trenches. You can keep going for you work your tank a bit sideways.
But the Panzer is generally on your Tail and waiting... if you sit to long! LoL

Another thank game is Iron "Warriors T72 Tank Command". Its a modern tank game, plus its realistic.

There are many other things of vital importance.

The optics for instance. The T-34 lacked of bad quality in optics, and the Zeiss optics of the Pz 3,4,5 was excellent.
The sight of the tiger is a bit complex
http://thrillingwonder.blogspot.com/2007/02/wwii-nazis-...ls-unexpectedly.html (http://thrillingwonder.blogspot.com/2007/02/wwii-nazis-tank-manuals-unexpectedly.html)

is it historically correct?

Panzerknacker02

Indeed that's the suggestion that I've always read of- that German optics were premier in the world and that Soviet sights were poor by comparison. I have two examples of the SlfZF1a sight used by the various Sturmgeschütze, Jagdpanther, Ferdinand/Elefant and Jagdpanzer IV and can say that they're of very high quality- the sight image is clear and sharp and they're not nearly so advanced as the telescopic TZF9 and 12 series sights of the Tiger and Panther, respectively. It's a small wonder that these vehicles consistently scored knockout hits at ranges exceeding 1000m.

The Steel Fury demo is indeed fun- I'm not so crazy about some of the controls and some of the graphics and animations are a little dated in appearance, but then again it is just a demo version. With any luck the final release version will be rather better and address the realism mistakes (such as HE shells having tracers).

Hmmm... the SF demo doesn't work at all for me. Stops dead in the water just before the mission starts after loading everything http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

Are you having problems? Only thing I'm getting is atmospheric sounds - tanks rumble in the distance, birds sing etc. - and a black screen!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif Well if I run over a mine and it blows off a track and my crew has to get out and fix it, the .50cal would be a threat... if you can get close enough to use it before the 8,8cm 'present' I'd send your way arrived http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

It's a bit twitchy- it's crashed and jammed on me, but usually works. I've not had just a blank screen. The controls Word file does state that the game doesn't work with nVidia GefForce FX video adapters- could that be the problem?

msalama

Could that be the problem?

Nope. ATI Radeon 9250 here - a POS card to be sure, but not unsupported AFAIK. But I'll sniff around and maybe I'll arrive at a solution one of these days http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bummer.

Geez, it's impossible to get any useful information to or from the makers of Steel Fury- no contact info on the Discus Games website (the Forum isn't functional) and while they say they're looking forward to feedback from those who download the alpha version, unless you can read Russian, you're out of luck and my second language (if you can even call a couple of years of highschool and one in university that) is German...

I'd be much happier I think if Ubisoft/Maddox Games would do one

Yeah, it's too bad about the lack of info about STEEL FURY because I prefer the 1941-1943 East Front period to 1944-45. If you like company/battalion-level, 1C's new THEATRE OF WAR is very interesting.

A bit of info...

"Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942"

Game "the steel fury: Kharkov 42"- is a tank simulator in the theme of WWII.

Events in the game are based on the little-known offensive operation, conducted by the Red Army from May 12 to 28, 1942. In the course of German counterattack, begun 17 May 1942, three Soviet Armies were surrounded and forced through fierce fighting to leave from the "meat grinder" Of The "Barvenkovskiy Kotel"¯.
These events seize the player and keep him engaged to the very end of the game. Bitterness from the loss of his combat comrades and happiness of victories, the monstrous roar of tanks and military vehicles and the sounds of war armadas, the torn eardrums from the eternal cannonades of projectiles and roar of bullets, fear and fury - all this will turn any player into rabid excitement. No time to the reflections - only battle! And in this entire devil's sabbath of the war horror the player will have only one human desire - to SURVIVE!!!
The tanks and their crews, represented with the maximum historical authenticity, are the central elements of the game. Entertainment and scale battles with the participation of all possible troops are joined into three campaigns perfectly focused on the events of those days. Each of the campaigns gives the specific tank, which has its special features of control, behavior while under power and in combat.
The player will be introduced to the special features of conducting tank combat. Its rules are simple: do not turn to the enemy with your board, actively maneuver, shoot earlier and be more precise than enemy.
Commanding - reasonably determine tactics, try to save your vehicle and crews. Choose your own way to victory!
Real war = real vehicles. The exterior view of vehicles, its inside environment and tactical symbols are recreated with historical authenticity.
The player is given the possibility to participate in battles with a lot of vehicles, whose large part is represented for the first time. Scale war. One in the battle is not a soldier... to achieve mission's goal interact with all kinds of military troops that participate in the operation. Try to feel how it was. Find your own unique solutions to achieve different combat missions, and take all thoughts to victory.
In the game is used its own "engine"¯ – code as the technological basis.

1. realistic physics. With the simulation of game world the precise calculation of ballistics and visibility is used. In the game the realistic model of the collisions of technology with the surrounding objects, the houses, the trees and another technology is present. All objects are destroyed and are deformed. For the technology, both under control of player and under control of the AI is simulated real physics of motion.

2. simulation of environment. In order to draw nearer virtual world to the real one contemporary graphic technologies, such are used as: the dynamic illumination, which makes it possible to transmit the change of the time of day and to recreate night missions; specials-effect for the recreation of different weather conditions; the systems of particles, which make it possible to simulate realistic smoke effects, aqueous effects or flying lumps of the ground.

3. destroyed objects. Everything, which will be encountered on the way of tank or projectile, can be destroyed, without exceptions. The landscape being deformed makes it possible to create new landscapes and different ground constructions.

4.utilities and editors. Game gives the player the possibility for the creation of his own modifications. Convenient editors will make it possible to add new vehicles and weapons.

5. simplicity of tuning game and control of a tank. In the game player level can adjust the complexity of management of vehicles and military troops, so the gradual complication of game from one mission to another due to the appearance of new types of vehicles and more complex tasks and play ranges.
The player could rapidly be pulled in the play process and obtain the maximum of pleasure that exists based on training missions.

6. historical authenticity. Play missions are based at the events of that time and recreated with the archive and photo documents, just as combat ranges. For the action, to player is accessible to large spaces, unconfined by mountains, by forests or by other obstacles. This makes it possible to select ones own path of motions and tactics of waging of war at its discretion. in the game there will be:
- realistic physics,
- destroyed objects,
- landscape being deformed,
- day and night missions (!), tuned gameplay, changing weather conditions

Have you tried the panzers in Red Orchestra yet?

Didn't like it; played the offline training mission and their armor penetration model is not too my liking...

If you shoot a Tiger I with an IS-2 you ALWAYS need to hits to destroy the Tiger I - never mind if shot from sides, angles or distance...
And after the first hit the Tiger always puffs out black smoke from the engine deck like a toaster with the bread stuck inside...

You will see tanks with their engines on fire drive happily around...

Bye, bye, red orchestra...play your tunes for someone else - but not for me.
