Hi all,

I was amazed to discover that the British Gladiator was flown by the German Luftwaffe in WW2 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Some details of the Latvian Glads may be of interest. These come from "Barbarossa victims. Luftwaffe kills in the east" by Tomasz J. Kopaneski. Read this in your lunch hour and your colleagues realise what they had always thought - he is seriously weird. Mr Kopanenski states that the Latvian Gladiators were bought from Britain in 1937 and were numbered 114 to 126 and 163 to 175. Some were indeed taken over by the Soviets when the Baltic republics were invaded in 1940. Some aircraft were destroyed in June 1941 but a number including some Lithuanian examples were shipped to Germany (as per Avro's link) - he says 11 complete and two damaged.

He also says that the Lithuanians purchased 14 machines in 1938. These were taken over by the Russians in 1940 and some surviving machines were amongst those shipped to Germany.

For anybody interested in the 1941 period it is an extraordinary compilation of photographs and shows the pounding the VVS suffered early on. ISBN is 8373000658 if anybody wants to get hold of a copy although I have no idea if it is still available.

I would post a scan of the relevant page except I am both technologically dense and rather tired.

Pip pip

Germans used Harvards too. Ok not quite Harvards but NAA 64's and 57's.

Obtained them from France.

Gladiators and Hurricanes seem to have fought on all fronts and by bout sides. Sturdy machines, considering they where partly built by wood and canvas!

The WWII Wehrmacht was famous for scrounging. They were unable to provide all the weapons needed be they tanks, trucks, anti-tank guns, training planes, engines for aircraft, etc., so they used British trucks, Czech tanks, Soviet PAKs, and whatever they found after the fight. After the 1941-42 Battle of Moscow the army was chronically short of equipment, as was the Luftwaffe.
