I've had just about enough of being cheated or lied to on an almost daily basis. China is getting on my nerves.

Anyone with experience in Taiwan?

I spent a couple months there 19 (wow, now I'm depressed http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif ) years ago on a college exchange program. The people were very nice, and very industrius. The cities are packed with crowds but, the rural areas are beautiful!

So, I vote, YES!

A bloke I know was working there (IIRC) for a telco a while back. I'll ask his opinion if you want...

Pirschjaeger,

If what we read in the west is true, just be careful what you write about China online. I don't want to see you end up in Jail/Gaol!

My dad went there about a decade ago on a buisness trip....apparently its his favourite country out of all the ones hes been to. The foods beutiful, as is the scenery and the people are incredibly friendly and hospitable. I say yes.

I'm gonna be in China this winter - archaeological dig south of Shanghai - so this topic kinda puts a damper on my enthusiasm.

It's not all bad though right?

If I could only give one bit of advice to anyone under 30, it would be to take any and every opportunity to travel no matter how far to experience new places and people.......You'll have enough time midlife on to stay in the same place.

I've spent a total of 6 years here now. I've seen Beijing develop beyond belief in this short time. As for dishonesty, nothing has changed. It is still braggable when you cheat someone out of money or anything valuable. These people are proud of doing what we in the west dispise. This society has no moral fibre.

I did a quick net search on Taiwan and was impressed. I had spoken to a Taiwanese woman about two weeks ago and asked her the differences between Beijing and Taiwan. If what she said was true then Taiwan is morally much like the western nations.

I'm 40 now and each year it seems the quality of life becomes more important while money becomes less. Coming here for a short time to Beijing is ok but long term will take years from your health.

They still paint crosswalks here but you must use them with extreme caution. There is no respect for a fellow human here. I am so lucky to have been born and raised in the west.

I think the Chinese men's football team accurately sums up the nation.

Texas is the place to Go. Real Football, where you get spit at in the highschool level (Trust me I know). Its just as big as Taiwan (If you picked Texas up and placed Houston where ElPaso is, ElPaso would be sitting in the Pacific), Alot of culture, and You have the Dallas Cowboys (Gods Team, so the saying goes).

By all means go. I visited Kaoshiung in the south & Keelung & Taipei in the North some 30 years ago. I found the people friendly & hospitable. I know in the intervening years they are much more prosperous and afflent now. I have met many Taiwanese overseas and in the US as well and have never had any bad experiences with them. Kaoshiung is very warm and Keelung was foggy and cold as I remember.

A mate of mine went there for a month and plans to go back to work for a year or so, so it can't be too bad. He has heaps of experience travelling around Asia so I guess he knows the good from the bad.

And the food should be a delight. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

I'm sick of Texas. Too many car thieves here! Second time they have tried to nick my truck. I'd go to Taiwan If I could. I've seriously been thinking of leaving the US. I was thinking more along the lines of the UK though.

Several months ago, i heard a lengthy story on NPR about the rising Chinese merchant/capatalist class. The report noted that many businessmen in China were suffering from extreme burnout. Many of the businessmen interviewed expressed a desire to see a more "moral" business climate rather than the dog-eat-dog model being employed

Recommend to go to the Philippines for a couple of months.
Then go back to China, you will feel like being in heaven...

Hmmm, let me get volumes 6 and 7 of my third list.

In short, contracts mean nothing here and stealing money or cheating people is admirable and braggable.

I'm pretty tough-skinned but 6 years of this is adding up.

Been researching about Taiwan. It's looking great. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Indeed. It's OK if you visit for a while being on a holiday trip; once do visit regularly or even life and work there it's just a pain in the b*tt.

I got fed up with the Philippines for that reason - just too much of a hazzle.
Was back for a holiday recently and wanted to hire a moto-taxi. Driver and his buddy did not know that I understand some Tagalog. They started way to high as a price, told me that it was 20 or 25 clicks to destination. I walked out of the little store and pointed out the marker right in front of it where 11km was written on.
They laughed and one fellow said to the other "hey, he's clever". Being caught he lowered the fare to an acceptable price, but then his buddy jumped in and suddenly price was going up again... I just laughed (as they did) and walked back.

Just a little sample, and there are just too many, one after another...

Spending more time in Thailand nowadays, not that they are angels over there, but they sure do look like schoolkids compared to the Pinoys.
And every time I come back to Bangkok after a visit from Manila I appreciate it...

Dunno about Taiwan, not much about China either (but their toilets are an experience itself... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif )

Good news!!

Once they realized I had one foot out the door, they not only gave what they had previously promised but also increased it. TBH, I'm shocked. I never would have expected this but then again, the owner of my company, Chinese, lived in Japan for 20 years.

I guess Taiwan can wait. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
