Anyone got it ? Knows more about it ?

Seen it. Must have it ! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Check this video out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts8yKBI-Qcs)

There seems to be so little information on this sim on the net. Even the website doesnt really tell something about its abilities except that it is no game but a serious tank simulation software for military training purposes.

And there is a version for the private market available !

Its called Steel Beats Pro PE (Personal Edition)

Costs $125 though

Much but at least affordable. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

It features lots of modern tanks from several nations (USA , France, Germany, UK etc...)

The maker's website states that there is a Steel Beasts 2 in the making which will have a up-to-date graphics engine. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

AND it will be a sim developed for the game market. Which means for us simmers http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

Release....this year http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Nope, sadly not.

Its also a bit confusing. While googling for Steel Beasts 2, i found several websites with dev interviews from 2003 and screenshots from a even older engine than the one from Pro PE.

The devs stated that the planned release would be in 2004 which obviously never happened.

It seems that they already developed it back then, and for some reason put it on ice for some years and worked on SB Pro PE instead. A highly improved version of the original Steel Beasts from 2000.

Now it seems that they picked development of this successor to Pro PE up again as they state this on their official website. (No release date there but the wikipedia article says the planned release is 2008)

Developers website (http://www.esimgames.com/steel_beasts_2.htm)

Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Beasts)

Sadly both websites dont really give any good informations.

I own a copy of SB Pro PE.
It's a very cool Tank sim and indeed the Personal Edition is the commercial market version of the training tool used in various military forces. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's a real sim, with all the systems of a tank modelled. Armor is how you suppose it would be and shells have a very advanced algorithm that takes type, velocity, thickness, angle etc etc all into account!

The sounds a fabulous. With the whizzing of bullets, the screams of incoming artillery, the hum of the hydraulics inside the tank, its all very good.

The graphics are the only thing that's more or less lacking at the moment, although for all the units in-game there's an active community around making high quality high resolution skins which makes the tanks a beauty to look at. You also get woodland, snow, autumn and desert themed skins and environments. The graphics of the environments are a bit outdated, but certainly functional and a pleasure to look at( Think of much triangular terrain and sprites for trees and grass. Houses are generic as well), but...

eSim is actively developing SB Pro PE and it will receive big updates for -as of now- eternity, adding user requested features, new units, new areas of operation, new graphics, rework of systems. Its constantly evolving, although at a slow pace I should add.

Included as well is a full fledged mission editor. A terrain editor is also included, but its not as user friendly as the mission editor.
The mission editor lets you make huge, complex scenarios with different battleplans which the AI can react to depending on the situation!

It's quite a pack, but as far as I am concerned it's well worth the money.
But hang out at the official forums and see for yourself I'd say! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

P.S. Steel Beasts 2 is still far off as release dates are concerned. At least, if I remember correctly. The focus atm is still on Pro PE to get a big update out somewhere this year, because after that focus will shift to SB2 (correct me if I am wrong, please)

Thanks for infos Yskonyn23 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I watched some videos on youtube and the sound is really good and the graphics are as you already said, indeed outdated and sadly lack detail.

I wonder how detailed the tank's systems are modeled.

For instance the thermal sight display has lots 'o buttons.

Do they all have functions like the real thing or is everything down sized to one or three functions and the rest is just for the eye to keep the look of the original thing like in most sims ?

The player seems to make some adjustments on that thermal sight in this video here

Just love these authentic commands and acknowledgements http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

I might be off here, because I only have experience with the M1A1 and the Leopard 2A5, but I think these two are the only ones with completely finished 3D interiors, although all the systems of all the tanks are accurately modelled. If you see a switch or button somewhere you can bet on it, it actually does something, just like in the real thing. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

These two only having complete 3D environments doesn't mean not all stations on other tanks are there. They are, only you have to skip to the station using the corresponding key on the keyboard, whereas in the M1 and Leo2 you can mouseclick your way over there. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ive tried Steel Beasts Gold Edition. Although the graphics are even older , its complexity already gives me headaches http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Reminds of this Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ94g6nDNo8&feature=related)
