I am going to be visiting the UK this summer and will be staying with my niece in Northampton. Are there any WW2 museums near Northampton, say within an hours drive?

Many thanks

Hi blairgowrie.

You may like the shuttleworth collection. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

If you have lots more travel time the best ones
in UK my humble opinion are
Duxford
http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/
and RAF Hendon

Have good trip over.

Northampton to Cosford about the same and most of it on major roads

Cosford is the northern section of the RAF museum

That's great news VV_Holdenb and TaylorT. I didn't realise Duxford was that close to Northampton. My niece is on holiday the week we will be down south then it's off to Blairgowrie and Edinburgh.

Many thanks again.

A bit further afield, and up North is the Newark air museum on the way to Lincoln. And why not jump on a train an go to the RAF museum in Hendon, North London, or come into central London and go to the Imperial War Museum in Southwark, and take in HMS Belfast, that "straight shootin' ship" as the Americans called it in Korea, a WWII cruiser moored on the Thames. Both Hendon and of course central London are easily do-able in a day by public transport.

If you like AEP/PF you will drool helplessly in Hendon.

Do a web search for info/virtual tours.

I live reasonably close to Northampton and I should be visiting Duxford soon. If I don't fly in I'll let you know how long it takes.
Shuttleworth should be worth a look and is closer (turn off at milton keynes).
There's some other stuff around here at local air fields.
There's the de-havilland aircraft centre and mosquito museum, off the m25 - about 45 mins from you, depending on traffic - the M1 can be awful.

Now that I think of it, we will be coming into Heathrow first thing in the morning so could visit the RAF Museum at Hendon and then go up to Northampton. Next day we could visit Duxford. Any more than that I would think I am pushing it with the wife. Ill have to get another card for my camera with all those great photo opportunitys.

Oh boy, I really messed up. I have a niece who lives in Northampton and another niece in Newbury, Berks. We are staying with the Newbury one. Is that further away from Duxford and the Mossie museum?

blairgowrie

when in Edinburgh if possible check out Scotlands museum of flight at East Fortune- not that far away- its not very big but worth a visit

http://www.nms.ac.uk/flight/index.asp

and National war museum in Edinburgh castle

http://www.nms.ac.uk/war/index.asp

In the castle there is also a room of remembrance containing books with the names of all Scots who have fallen in the wars- it is very moving

Hope you will enjoy your visit.

hi blairgowrie

Duxford would be over 2 hours away from Newbury about 110 miles, if you are staying Newbury in Berks.

Also another museum that may be of interest
is the Tanmere aircraft museum. http://www.tangmere-museum.org.uk/
Chichester, West Sussex (44miles from Newbury(Berks) about an hour and half drive)

As Tony suggested multimap.com is useful for this. Also AA route finder to get an idea of distances between locations and travel time.

I'm 10 miles from Northampton....perhaps you should visit the other niece! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I changed my email address, so I will PT you the new one.

As the guys above said, Shuttleworth and Duxford are within an hours drive of Northampton, Newbury is 1.5 - 2 hours from Cambridge (a route I have driven on several occasions for work).

Newbury is only a 20 minute drive from me in Sunny (chav ridden) Aldershot, hampshire. It took me 45 minutes to drive to RAF Hendon last month so if you want to see some planes within an hours drive, go there.

All is not lost!

Just got an email from my Northampton niece inviting us to stay with her too so we might get to Duxford after all. Got to keep the family happy right.

Thanks for your links in Edinburgh dieg777. I did all my schooling in Edinburgh and met my first love there (but not the last). I will certainly visit both places.

And thanks for your new email address B16Enk. I think we should get together for that pint.

And thanks all for your great suggestions. I worked in London for a couple of years and had no idea there was such a wealth of interesting places to visit.
