View Full Version : White Strips on F-4U1 noses? What were they there for?

What are the white marks on the F-4U-1A and -D in-game?

...the ones placed right in front of the canopy glass, on the nose. What were they there for?

They couldn't have been for carrier landings, could they? Like the dive angle indicators in the Ju-87 Stuka?

I have a creepy feeling this is going to reveal my noobness http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Those white markings are actually pieces of tape. The Corsairs oil tank was located in that area, and it had a tendency to leak. Therefore, mechanics would seal up the seams outside the tank with tape, to keep the windscreen from getting oil on it.

Hehe, I was thinking it was something highly technical...

Simple solution, but definitely the LAST thing I would have thought about.

Thanks for the answer.

It was the fuselage main fuel Tank. thats what the tape was for.

I see the connection as to why Baldie would post something here...

'cause he sticks out like a striped dog...

but that's what we love him for!

So, what is it now?

Leaky oil or fuel tank?

I read about that somewhere and for the life of me I can't remember which it is, but I;m leaning towards oil.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Russian ducktape to make them able to achieve higher then 700kmh dive speeds.

#22 is the oil tank.

#33 is fuel cap.

#34 is the fuel tank.

This was scanned From F4U book with schemeatic

In "The Jolly Rogers", Tom Blackburn said it was to keep gasoline vapor from blowing back into the cockpit from the leaky fuel tank in front of the windscreen during takeoff & landing when the canopy was open.

They got oil from the motor and hydraulic fluid from the cowl flap actuators on the windscreen in flight, but the tape didn't help that. Their solution for that was to fly through rain clouds to get a quick wash. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

They were a very inventive group. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Beebop did a great job on the "Worn" skins for my Filthy Few campaign. On the mosy beat-up version, he doubled up the tape on the nose and it looked really good....

That would be the late, great Joe Strummer... member of the Clash. Understandable avatar seeing as how Chuck_Older is a Clashaholic.

Death or Glory... one of my all time favorite songs.
