View Full Version : German planes crosshairs...

Hum, I once tried to play a German campaign in a fighter and... couldn't. I mean, all Russuan fighters have the crosshair in the middle of the screen, so you point, aim and shoot. However, German ones have a piece of glass on the side, and no crosshair. How am I supposed to aim? I fire a cannon shot to see where the shell goes (following the smoke trail) and then adjust accordingly. That wastes ammo and warns the other guy.
I mean, they HAD to be able to aim, right? Is it a bug, or am I not doing something right? Tell me if I don't make myself clear

Press Shift + F1 and enjoy.

hit Cntrl+E to center the crosshair.... or is it shift F1??? dont remember try them out
i think probably that Shift+F1 is bailout.

anyway its because the german planes had the crosshair off center so the pilot had to move to the side to aim.

Foehammer, i thought you were a long time Il2 player and that you knew this?

If you're looking at post count, it's mostly from SH3 and SH4 forums.

As for Il-2, I had it since the original one came out, but played sporadically, due to school, work and now uni.
Maybe I was blind, but I was unable to find that Shift-F1 combo in the options, and hence only played the Russian campaign. And hence couldn't play the German one cause I couldn't aim :P

The reason for the position is not that the Germans moved their heads for shooting. It is because you've got two eyes, one left, one right, none center. Most people are right eyed, so the Germans put the gunsight in line with the right eye, allowing for shooting without head movement.

Other nations constructors apparently were big fans of a miniature cyclops as a pilot.

JtD, do you have any evidence of your claim about a predominance of right eyed people? My experience has been that it is about evenly split b/w left and right eye.

I was a firearms instructor for quite a few years. My experience was that the majority of right handed people were right eye dominant and the majority of left handed people were left eye dominant. There were some exceptions of course, but generally that held true.

I write with my left hand. I throw with my right. I use the fork and knife like everyone else. I can play paddington equally badly with right and left hand. I use left handed stick in floorball. It is natural for me to use joystick with right hand, and mouse with left!

My right eye is dominant.

What am I? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Thanks guys! Speakin of eyes, my right hand is dominant, yet my master eye is left. Been doing shooting for some years now, i KNOW that i should technically shoot with my left eye, but i cant hold a rifle left-handed http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Interesting, because it's in the same setting (I instruct/RSO for the UC Merced Sport Shooting Club) that I've found that there isn't a predominance. I've found that about a third of right handed people are left eye (including myself, which sucks), and that most lefties are also left eye.

If I was a bio major or something, this might be an interesting topic to do a research paper on, but I think as a history major I'll stick with something easier.

I've seen several research papers on this subject with claimed results ranging from 67% right eye dominant to 80% right eye dominant. Probably depends upon who is doing the research and for what purpose!

No. I take this information at face value and will not go to research it. But wikipedia says two thirds right eyed, good enough for me.
