I have a question about a Japanese defensive maneuver...It is called the "shachugaeri" (I saw this mentioned in a Microsoft translation of a supposed Japanese fighter tactics manual- The "MSCFS-Pacific game"). I have heard about a defensive maneuver that involved a "sideways loop" but I have not seen many (any) other sources that refer to this maneuver by the name "shachugaeri"...My understanding is that this maneuver was considered a bit of a secret weapon (made possible by the A6M2's incredible maneuverability...), but it had a limited application due to the fact that your hanging slow in the air.

Has anyone heard of this maneuver, and does anyone know what it looked like (how it was done)? Does the fighter roll sideways as he is pulling up into the loop (or at the top of the roll)?

Does anyone know of any sources that talk about this maneuver?

I think it´s the maneuver I read in a issue of areoplane monthly, there a Japanse pilot described it.Don´t know wich issue though.I think it was something about kickin the rudder in the top of the loop.

It's on the website... HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs2/articles_tactics_japan.aspx)

you will find it under "counter attack"

<span class="ev_code_YELLOW">"Counter-attack against the belly attack from behind. Though you can counter-attack by means of a slanting loop (shachugaeri), since you are often a good firing target for a long period when in a climbing position, twist away as soon as possible."</span>

Thanks, good memories of that website and the site for CFS1. My first flight sim.

Well, I'm perplexed. Maybe ask at the J-aircraft (http://www.j-aircraft.com/) site?
