MGs hitting the way they should sounds good.
Are the stalls a little nastier now?

I even got into some slow scissors with the AI. I was throwing it all over the place at very low speeds. It never shuddered once. The same thing in a Yak will stall.

I'm sure I can make her stall when I need her to. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
Too bad though, I was hoping she'd recapture some of her old glory.
Oh well you wont hear any complaining from me, this game is great!

The "main gun" is a 37mm cannon, carguy. A direct hit even at .4k can be devastating.

That's cool. That's the way she should be with her MGs. Before, on average you could tear into a 190 while flying an N1 and all your doing is slowing him down. Now '39 fliers will have more options and taking the extra ammo will be that much more beneficial. In the original IL-2 the MGs were more potent than in FB v1.0, which was about the only down grade from the IL-2 '39.

No she is not of the quallity of Il2 but she is a whole lot better than we had suffered with FB.

I have not tested everything except the P47 and P39 but from what I have seen. FB has taken on a new lease of life for me and the added FPS at pre patch settings indicates the patch is a good one.

More testing though. Cant wait till later/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I'm really pleased w/ the new MG, I prefer the Q-10 and it's about time those guns were good for more than sighting the cannon. I bet the Jug is a real beast now!

The wing mounted M2's are supposed to fire at almost twice the rate as the nose mounted ones. Is this modeled?

Funny. at 1K, 100% throttle, and stick full back; P-39 will turn endlessly like Hurri before. No danger of stalls whatsoever. -And Cobra was (also) known of its vicious stalls. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Sorry P-39 fans, but IMHO Cobra is quite boring plane to fly nowadays. I was hoping that P-39 would need some handling again after the patch but no.

Concerning the stalls, I agree.
However, you can't tell me that the Yaks, Las, Hurris, 109s, 262s, and so on weren't easier to get kills with in FB v1.0.
Would you have me believe that the patch made the P-39 more "uber-noobish" than the Yaks?

The P39 is nice, I like it. I was also not seeing flutter in hard manuvering, and had zero trouble getting the plane where I needed it to be. Sure fun making holes with those guns. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

In the P40, violent snap rolls toward the stall side are quite surprising the first time. I'll have to see if I can get the P30 to that point.

Gem,

The truth is. The P-39 stalls less than any other plane in the game now. The Yak3 has a quicker stall. I know you don't want to hear that, but it's true.

So it seems. I noticed that the engine RPM's are slow to drop after cutting the throttle (I was in MP mode). At first I thought it was a sound glitch, but the dial showed the same thing.

Yeah I don't like the sound of that. This is an "open beta" though, so maybe soon. I'm curious to see if my stall still work on command.

The Yaks is still more noobish though, regardless of stalls.

No, I'm not saying any of that. I'm just saying that I liked it much better when you had to be careful with it (just as any other plane too). I Dont care that noobie-crap at all.

P-39 was my choice in IL-2 when I had to demonstrate excellent (and hard) flight models of this game. Now maybe P-40 is comparable, but I havent tried it yet in 1.1b. VVS planes are out of the question because practically every one of them gets out of spin instantly when you release the stick.

I haven't tried the patch yet so this is subject to change.

General tips:

*Accept all head on challenges. With the exception of a few aircraft you have the advantage. In the cases where you don't have the advantage it's good practice.

*Set cannon convergence to 100-150m to decrease the lobbing effect of your 37mm shells.

*In a Dog Fight arena (where fuel is decided more by you than the mission) know that less fuel will help your speed and maneuverability and more fuel will increase your gunnery accuracy. I like 50%.

*Make the deadly stalls your friend. Learn to use them.

*Know which aircraft you can turn fight and which ones you can't.

*When turn fighting some Nancy with trim-on-a-heymo tap your combat flaps on/off for a split second at the apex of your turn. This also works fighting against an opponent who has a slight turn advantage.

*Turning absolute horizontal or absolute vertical doesn't generate as quick of a turn as in between the two.

*Looping up increases altitude if you need it. Looping down increases speed when you need it. Remember you're not just fighting an opponent your fighting your resources. Keep them fresh.

*Learn to fly with little or no energy against an opponent with a major E advantage. (See vulching allowed server) With the P-39 you're more likely than in most fighters to end up in this type of situation. Even the best Energy saving strategies will eventually exhaust in this plane.

*Fly online. The AI is usually worse than most online pilots. Also the AI can't simulate the differences between the different human pilots you'll face. Experience of different types becomes available online.

*Learn to land fast, very fast (See vulching allowed server). Come in at 400km/h if you like. A few hundred meters from the runway begin a corkscrew and hit the flaps full. As you nose up and around keep an eye on your speed, when you hit around 270km/h hit the gear and flatten out. You'll gracefully glide onto the runway and will have negated the long landing approach.

*When you drop on an enemy's 6 use the MG's to wear him down. Use short bursts no longer than a half second. When he's worn down or if you have a clean shot initially use the kill shot (37mm).

*If you're ever vulched don't hit refly instead look around and get a fix on the vulcher. Wait till the right moment to spawn. It should be a moment when you can face him. Once you spawn point in his direction and gain speed. Learn to time it so you reach a speed of 100-120km/h when he nears. When he closes down on you, to fire/strafe/vulch, nose up and drill him with a 37mm shot. Remember I said don't pass up any head-on shots.

It'd have to be the A-10 in LOMAC for me, but I prefer my WWII planes.

I'm looking forward to the P-63.
Other than that, there's not much that will remove me from my '39 seat.

Gem,

I joined up with the VFA25 squad. They will switch to Lock-On when it's released. I wanted to fly the Warthog too, but they all like the fighters, and there is no way for me to keep up with the A-10. So, I settled on the F-15.

Finally got a nice stall out of the P39 on HL a minute ago. Pulling like heck at 50 meters... rolled into left turn while pulling... boom! Sudden snap like the P40 used to, I missed my chance to recover, went directly to flat spin, game over.

The spins are not as easy to get into but there still just as hard to get out of. Remember: throttle to idle - neutralize the controls - hard rudder w/ the spin until the spin slows ( the p-39's flat spin has two phases: slow turn and fast turn, you have to achieve slow turn before you can recover.) as soon as the slow spin develops hard rudder opposite the direction of spin and stick forward. Throttle up when dive is achieved. And don't pull up until you're @ corner speed.(around 280/kmh) Rule of thumb: if you're lower than 1000m (higher for n00bs, lower for aces) just bail. Some spins are just unrecoverable and I've spun in from 3000m before.

That remembers me of the good times when FB wasn't out, and I was still a noob in Il2, and I was flying against bombers. Well I've cutt the wing of a He111 from 900m(!) in a Yak9K.

Maybe I downloaded a different patch but the P-39 stalls a lot easier than it did in FBv1.0 IMO. That or my joystick is acting up again. The MGs are better now.

Buzz did you try the N1?
The Q10 and Q1 don't stall as easily as the N1, which is historically correct.

I got this baby into a couple of spins. I sure like the p39 - been a fav since the begining - remember too the late p39s are much better than the ones that are so famous for spins and stalls.

Now it's a tossup for me - 190s/p39 - both great fun - also the p40 and p47

I killed 4 F4 Aces in it. No1 had his wing ripped off at the root. No2 lost in a turning fight and bailed. No3 got cought low and slow. A trio of 37mm shell was more than he could take. No4 explodes as his wing shatters then his aircraft. I fly through the debris and his engine spins burning on the ground. Best track I got. I never use the 37mm unless Im close enough to spit on 'em. I like this plane.

I also found that I had no trouble stalling the N1. I kept it more or less out of spins. Just two quickies against an average 190 A4 in the QMB, once with MGs only and once with cannon only. Didn't have much time to test.

I haven't flown the 39s much in FB1.0 because of squadron activities and online wars. From what I noticed they're too easy to recover, and compared to IL-2 they are "hard" to stall but I can't say much about historical accuracy, just as I suspect most of us cannot. I am glad that we get seem to be getting some of the touchiness back, and I will have to have a look at spin recovery. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif
