View Full Version : Prewar torpedo is ever a good choice?

I found the prewar torpedo gas/steam powered to be the best option. It is fast and have a great range over the electric powered one at least on the begining of 1942 for now.
I found the TIV useless, because altough you aim them to the hull, when near the target they follow the noice of the ship propeller and bounce several times, alerting its crew that something is around.
However I didnt got yet the TIII wich should be the best standard torpedo.

I use the electric ones ,TIII I believe they are called.
They leave no bubble trail at the surface so you can even suprise those pesky DD's. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif
I don't use the steam/gas torpedo anymore, only if I run out of electric torpedoes.

I leave the type IV loadout in the stern when they become available for one reason; they help me kill DDs. They work awsome when I pass through the convoy screen. While I'm setting up a run on the merchant ships I also wait for the DD running along the parimeter to get close. Then when I have good range on the DD and she hasn't suspected me I let the stern torp ride and it hunts the DD down. Works 99% of the time.Even if it doesn't sink her its sure to blow her prop off and leave her useless. Then the side I'm attacking is wide open and I can set up a good run on the big ships. By the time the escorts on the other side respond, if the respond, all my fish are already running and I can begin evasion. So don't count out those homers yet they have their good uses. Also, I had a t-IV running on a C2 once and I was watching it on the tactical map because the time can get messed up if it has to turn after its initial run. Anyway I'm watching my torp bounce around the side of the C2 and I'm thinking it came in at a bad angle and I just wasted a torp and the-Torpedo Impact!-.Odd but it brought the ship down, I'll take it.

My last patrol (patrol 5) was early 1940. I selected a full load out of the electric torpedos. I had at least 3 prematures and the last one (with my last torpedo) cost me a C3 tanker that I had already hit twice. That premature was my last torpedo so I hae to come home without it. It was very frustrating. I had had a long stern chase and had had to evade a Swordfish plane. I had slowed it down with two lucky hits. I finaly got to a good position to finish her off and fired at about 900 meters. I couldn't believe it when the torpedo exploded early!
It was too stormy to use the deck gun.

I am going back to the steam powered torpedos for patrol 6.

switch the electric torps to impact only if you are firing in stormy weather. They explode less frequently on impact. I have yet to have one explode on me when set like that.

T-1 is all I ever use for hunting. When the T-IV s come out I'll load the stern with them but for general hunting the T-1 is best. DDs are so fast and unpredictable I never shoot at them unless point blank so the steam trail isnt a concern.

the way the game AI is right now I am happy with the old torpedo. I like the destroyers to notice me, then we go head to head, I fire a fast underkeel magnetic at between 600 - 700 meters, takes awhile for the AI to react but the collision speed there with the DD at full speed and my torp at full speed there simply isn't and DD with performance enough to get out of the way.

I don't mean to hunt destroyers with this torpedo, but they are in the tube and I can use them if I have to. The only critical part is ID that DD so I know if I have to change the depth from 4 to 4.5 or 5m or they glance off, there is I think two DD types that I have to rule out if I am going to maintain 4m depth on the torpedo and then I think one DD where I have to go to 3m. If for some reason the setting is wrong at least that old torpedo gives the DD a scare so most of the time it takes evasive action and it does not have time to steer back and attack me .... there I have the time to observe and ID the destroyer.

I then continue at full speed 10 degree rudder with focus on having my tail pointed toward the destroyer which is now turning, but mostly the focus is on creating enough separation for another shot. Full rudder will just keep us running in a circle. I adjust the depth and then he comes booring down and he gets the even more deadly tail shot ...

On tiny targets it feels better to use fast, it is easier to hit, and you use impact, cause you dont need that elegant hit on the small ships.

On the big ones a well aimed slow magnetic can do it.

Shooting from AOB180 a fast underkeel magnetic could be something if you want to try it ... I am not saying the ship will sink ...

anyways, that extra speed is good to have if you are not firing under ideal conditions.

but I shoot the electrics too when they by mistake are onboard. All I note is, ****, one of those slow torpedoes ..... other than that a torpedo is a torpedo is a torpedo ... don't affect me much but limits my options if it can not go fast ...

I also put TI at the stern to hunt destroyers. I had got DD even at long distance (inside a radious of 5000m) 44kt are too much for them to dodge when they discover it. Just a tip: since destroyers move fast the programing of the torpedo will need each second to perform ok. So press Q to have the torpedo tube open and dont loss some seconds, magnetic work fine but if you use contact put the T-deep as up as posible.

BTW, when the TIII are available?
