I think chuckie older got a ride on them. The collings foundation confuses everyone by repainting the B24 sometimes. it was dragon and its tail, now its witchcraft. ive seen them several times now, at airshows and coming thru here.

Yes, that B-17 & 24 have been "barnstorming" for over 15 years now. They come here to Toledo just about every year.

About 7 or 8 years ago they had a He-111 touring with them. I was lucky enough to get a tour of the plane with a WWII vet. The pilot who was to fly it out of there was late, so it was just me and a couple of the guys who look after the plane still there. I spent over an hour going over every inch of that plane. They must have drafted guys under 5'5" to man the belly gunner position. I couldn't get in all the way when I tried to man the gun. :-)

Sadly that last flyable He-111 is now gone. If I remember correctly it was destroyed on landing in Kansas City 3 or 4 years ago, killing the 2 pilots aboard.

Cheers,
MM

I found a story on that He-111 crash and pasted it below.

It crashed in Wyoming after having engine trouble.

Two killed in crash of vintage bomber

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A World War II-era German bomber en route to an air show crashed into a building under construction Thursday, killing the pilot and his passenger, police said.

Witnesses said they heard a sputtering sound shortly before the twin-engine HE-111 plowed through a chain link fence and slammed into the brick structure, igniting a fire that lasted an hour, police Lt. Robert Korber said.

A construction worker who was inside the building - an unfinished school bus washing facility - fled and escaped injury, said Tom Rooney of the Laramie County school district.

The bomber was the last of its kind known to be flying in the world, said Tina Corbett, spokeswoman for the Commemorative Air Force.

The plane belonged to the Arizona wing of the organization, which flies and restores World War II aircraft. The plane was en route from Midland, Texas, to an air show in Montana when the pilot reported engine failure, Corbett said.

The identities of the pilot and passenger were being withheld until their families could be notified.

"The plane came down in a field," Korber said. "We're just grateful (the pilot) probably made the decision that he saw a residential area in front of him and decided to put it down where there were not a lot of houses, or this could have been much, much worse."

Any confirmations of PF players heading that way this weekend, Bearcat?

I'm actually thinking of taking a ride with my oldest son this weekend and checking it out. I actually haven't been to an air show since I was about 10 and he used to fly Jane's WWII Fighters when I was at work during the day. He's a Senior in college at the moment, but he eyeballs me playing Pacific Fighters whenever he's home. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'm upgrading the family PC with some hand-me-downs soon that will give me two Pacific Fighter-capable PCs. He says he wants to fly again, so I'm going to hook up my refurbished X-45 and install the game on the 2nd PC.

Manassas Airport is only about 4 3/4 hours from here by Google Map. I'm thinking we might stay over Saturday night at a hotel and go Sunday, too. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
