I agree.. it would be nice to see smoke from bigger distances...

perhaps scalable with graphic quality: higher setting, higher distance drawing... so that weaker configs aren't penalized by too big fps hit

it would be nice to be able to spot them from high altitude... for the moment, we only see tracers from 25km away...

yeah question is tho is that even possible there are almost no objects in game that get drawn out as far as smoke or fire whud hafe to be to make it realistic

hopefully someone in the know can tell us if its possible or not?

i toatlly agree it would be great to see smoke as your comming into the target area

Gets my vote - though I suspect the current settings are a trade off between quality and performance.

If the new smoke effects are added to damaged buildings it makes the landscape seem much more dynamic. It helps get rid of that dead world look that flight sims in general tend to have.

I'm flying an A20 Normandy campaign at the moment and the increased smoke from damaged vehicles makes finding targets much easier. It feels quite real bombing by your flight leaders smoke. The smoke disappears after about a minute though which is disappointing

I'd like to see the view distance for smoke increased and the smoke from damaged vehicles lasting much longer like the smoke from crashed aircraft does now.

I second that.. although truth be told I have no experience with the new smoke yet... MOBO still out to ASUS.... Is this something that is in the config file and if it isnt could it be added? Something like smoke 0,1,2,3.. since it is a frames killer mostlikely like the water.. that way people could tailor it to their rigs...if you had a blazing monster yoy could max it all out so thje smoke would show for miles out..... if you had a lesser rig you could set it so that you wouldnt go to stuttersville when over an already hit target.

yeah, each bombed building should burn like that! and in the dark, the burning village should be visible from miles..

I`d like to see the render distances of friendly and enemy assets (leave neutral/inconsequential structures alone for now) made into a separate setting. Smoke and fire would be part of that setting. Something for the future.

Trying to spot certain types of ground targets with the aid of the icon map can be excruciating.

I love the new effects - as far as mission building goes, they are an absolute must....I dunno how the hell we got along without them until now. The flames and smoke are great - the lights too...but I agree - if the draw distance could be doubled or tripled without screwing up anything else, please do it.

I saw the fire-objects as a possibility to make night bomber missions with fire working as drops from pathfinders, but with the short draw distance this idea kind off falls apart. I too love the effects but their usability would be really better if the draw distance was greater...

It would be awesome if they actually did drop wouldn't it.

also every shot plane should do a big fireball followed by a big fire, not like a camping fire we have now

For navigation, Fire/Smoke draw distance should be to the horizon -- 20km

30km horizon in Perfect Mode, but 20km may [or may not] be enough for that case.

This all sounds like a great idea!

Put me down for wanting an increased draw distance for the smoke and other effects.

First

I'm very pleased to have what we have, which is a nice improvement for making missions more interesting.

Yes!

I'd like to see the smoke and fires from greater distances. Maybe distance could be set in the FMB when the stationary object is selected.

I'd also like to see timeouts set in stationary objects for start/stop on smoke and fires. I'm thinking it would just take a few minor changes for timeouts to be selected for each respective fire or smoke object.

I'd also like to have colored smoke so that we could tag target areas like was done in battle. This way you could see the smoke and find the targets. It would add alot to immersion.

Nice. There must be a way to make this work as part of a dynamic campaign. I can imagine destroying a target in one mission , say a large airfield, then in the next mission if you come across the same airfield you`ll see plumes of smoke from the last mission. Fires still burning, etc...

There must be a way to have DGEN say "This target was blasted previously so in next mission on same location place some smoke stacks, etc).

Wonder if I could do it myself?

Hey SeaFireLIV - Starshoy recently released an unofficial patch for BOE - for those of use with the FB+PF installation. As well as adding new planes etc. it is also meant to add the new smoke and fire objects too. I haven't seen them yet but I believe him. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Get two modern-day super carriers. Arrange them so they are facing each other head on. Place a flight simer on each 3000000hp steam catapault and fire. Just prior to collision, each of simmer will arch their neck back and then bring their head forward before smashing together in the ultimate head-butt.

Thats quite a bump.

Sorry this may seem anecdotal but I just remebered something that I think is quite useful for this thread.

I remember the guys working on the Disney movie Dinosaur having a problem with making grass look 'right'. They tried many ways, but still couldn't get the feel of it. One of them came up with a solution that worked fantastically though. Instead of trying to make grass flow in the wind, they used the fur off the creatures that had created, used it on the ground instead, changed the colour and the results were as you may have seen in the film. Tall grass (fur) blowing dynamically in the breeze........and so to my point.

WUAF_Black-Rose has posted a picture showing a bombed area with smoke moving across it, which realistically could be low-level clouds. Seeing that the clouds make hardly any hit on the performance of the game, wouldn't it be possible to make the smoke from clouds? Change a few variables so that the colour is dark grey or black (or varies during generation) add a different effect to make it drift along low-level and if possible why not have the clouds ascend vertically using the same dark/black cloud structure?

It's just a thought, but we fly through clouds easily enough.....why not make them vertical or low-level and dark grey/ black or even opaque?
