Last weekend I had my first real flight in a glider!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif It was just amazing, we where in the air for about 40 minutes. The instructor allowed me to control the plane most of the time, except during take off an landing of course http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif. He even allowed me to take control when we were being towed with now I think it was a mistake from him.
It was almost impossible for me to follow the aircraft that was towing us (At that time i was thinking, I need a gunsight! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) so the instructor had to re-take the commands. That part was a little frightening but when we released the hook everything changed. The flight was very smooth, the instructor guide me to take the hot air thermals and we manage to get to 700 meters. I€m quite sure mi experience with this simulator help a lot, but I think it is a little more difficult to control a glider in real life than any plane from any simulator. What I can tell you for sure is that more weather and atmospheric variables as air thermals need to be incorporated to this sim.

Now you can progress to a real mans airplane! One with an engine :P Just kidding man! Flying gliders is a good way to learn to use rudders if you plan to progress to powered aircraft!

Powered aeroplanes run on avgas.
Gliders run on intellect.

It's a pretty old saying, but in my experience it's true. Gliding is all about actually flying the aeroplane, powered flying is all about talking on the radio.

I quit flying powered aircraft a few years ago after earning my glider rating and realizing that I not only saved a bunch of money but had MUCH more fun with my leisure flying! I hope you continue with training and earn your license - if you are interested in a sim that will truly help learning to soar (especially those sometimes hairy aerotows) check out Condor - http://www.condorsoaring.com/ Powered flight is fun but nothing beats the reward of making a low "save" and avoiding a landout or of flying for hours using only your knowledge of the sky and your ability to work its hidden geography. Glad you enjoyed it! Having flown both gliders and small engined planes quite a lot I must say that gliders are actually harder to fly correctly than planes with an engine. Nothing that "pulls you straight" when applying to little rudder while turning and that accentuated aileron brake effect... Besides it's no big deal in a Piper if you don't fly clean but in a glider you want to squeeze every 0.1 m/s out of that thermal, especially when you're getting close to the ground and the nearest airfield is miles away http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif In gliders you regularly get an adrenaline kick like in those situations (and they happen often while flying cross country!). Many times have I stared at the altimeter while scanning the terrain below for a clearing or field big enough for a safe landing... You hear the audio variometer go beeeeoooooop and the flight computer says you are at -600 meters to the closest airfield. Then you feel a slight shudder in the wings and the variometer starts to show some signs of life - will you make it?

In my old glidng club we had a few airforce pilots that flew Viggens and JAS-39 Gripens (Swedish airforce). One of them always said that he flew the AJ-37 as it was his work but he would never quit flying gliders as that was his favorite hobby and often more thrilling and challenging than the airforce excercises. He never flew Cessnas or Pipers as he considered it booring as hell and you can train anyone to be a good Cessna pilot in a month or two but as a glider pilot you've got to make those crucial desiscions every minute to get around a cross country flight in a decent time. Every year you get a little better at making them and use the envelope of your plane a little better (recognize that from somewhere?). The feeling of a bleeding edge glider is a heck of a lot more like a fighter plane too. The controls are delicate and you feel in complete control of a precision piece of machinery. Well - and which planes do you fly (and consider real)? The only challenge I see in civilian powered aircraft is really aerobatics and even though I have a lot of fun flying areobatics in gliders the need for an engine mostly occurs when doing this...

I use to compare gliders vs. powered planes to sailing boats vs. powered boats. Boats with an engine are great for getting from A to B but there is almost no challenge in it. If you have a really fast boat it's fun for a couple of weeks but then it just gets annoying with the noice. Sailing boats at the other hand required brains to be used all the time to be fast. They are elegant and even though I have been sailing for many years I still feel like a rookie compared to most sailors. There is nothing more satisfying than passing a boat that is far better than yours in a narrow straight http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It's the same thing with gliders. Almost anyone can learn to fly them but without skill you are back on the ground after 15 minutes. After 20 years as a glider pilot I still fell like a rookie compared to the good ones, and I guess that will continue until I die. When it comes to taking the Cessna for a spin around the field I don't really feel that there is much left to learn and the "really good ones" are just old farts that can tell good stories from the past. You don't try to "milk them" for hint's about how to handle the Grob or shadow them in the air to learn things.

A last note - if you fly with someone in a glider trainer I have to say that there is a very big difference in handling compared to the good single seaters. It's like night and day so you are in for a treat if you continue flying until you get that opportunity! Even the good trainers feel like busses in comparison...

we used to winch launch and cable breaks were more than a bit scarey

Took my first intro ride on Jan 1, 1976, and first flight lesson the same day, been at it ever since.

i have also tried flying glider but we were thrown in the air if u can say that
we were towed by a stationary towing machine
and becouse of the wind the glider got up in the blue sky its a shame there wasnt much thermin(upwinds from the earth) but it was fun and i also were allowed to control it but as im a chicken http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/touche.gif i cant stand much G effekt and we didnt maneuver very much(must be hard to be a real pilot)

Gliding is really for learning to fly. You learn the seam of the pants feeling with the aircraft. I never got interested in instructing but my mates who did, often described how PPL guys coming to gliding lessions (even with quite some experience) had a Godawful "handwriting" on the stick they were tossing the plane all around the place correcting and over-correcting themselves. And it gets worse with more experienced ones - they are hard to re-learn. I started when I was 15 and I felt that it helped me to get even better basis for driving the car smoothly once I had learnt my "handwriting" on a glider.

The most evil experience one of my mates had, was teaching a helicopter pilot, with some 1000+ hours on H/C, to fly a glider. It was almost mission impossible - barely moving and his hand started drawing eight with the stick and he was pedalling like on tour de france. Short jerky controls that caused no meaningful reaction on the aircraft. My pal grabbed the stick with violence, clambed it between his knees and yelled at the guy:"SEE IT IS STILL GOING STRAIGHT YOU GRAZY SOB!"

BTW thanks to the gliders and the "handwriting" I don't shed the wings on P-51. Unfortunately, I can't get myself to do the most g@y DF stunts either in the game - too deep in the spine.

-1- Push your craft to the limit like a real fighter

-2- Turn as tight as needed and as close to stall without loosing control or wasting energy.

-3- You take off and there are good chances you won't come back (landing in a field) Happened to me 26 times and each time was a real trip.

-4- Compete against other good pilots!

-5- fly with many other in tight thermals! (better keep an eye on them all)

-6- Just like a fighter, You will be totally alone inside your single seat craft.

-7- No matter what you fly it probably was the best glider of the world when it came off the assembly line
