Well, I was sittin here thinking, while I was flying on a carrier recon mission to find Jap carriers, that the carrier gunner AI wasn't working at all in PF since I had flown over enemy carriers before and had no flak/mg fire coming from them. Well, I decided that when I reached the final waypoint before turning back for the carrier that I would fly out a little more and see if I could shoot down some zero's while they were in the landing pattern. My wingman and I engaged 4 zero's that were landing and after blowing all of them out of the sky I tell him to rejoin when suddenly what do I see? I see tracer fire flying up from all over the place as I a climbing out. HOLY ****! Those Nips are accurate! My wingman got blasted within 15 seconds of the start of AAA fire and they took out my aileron controls so I had to fly back with just rudder and elevator controls. Dang, and I thought I'd have to wait for the patch for that kind of reaction from the carriers. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

If you get close to the carriers, and I mean close, I guarentee you will be shot to pieces. Theres just too many smaller caliber guns waiting to blow you away.

One thing that amazes me everytime is heading towards the carriers and they put up a literal wall of lead.....very intimidating...

Dang, and I thought I'd have to wait for the patch for that kind of reaction from the carriers. Well the carrier have to shoot you before not after you shoot down is how side planes.Sleepy all the way.In my sbd3 campaing i get chase down by nearly 26 zero over my how fleet and nothing came from it even is i was over my hown carrier how real is that. That why the next patch is a hope to solve that i will put it to 0 minute sleepy mode.

Something I've found during my first campaign is that DGen puts the ship AAA to sleep for various times (I'm guessing to simulate crews of different experience levels getting to battle stations.) The effect is pretty cool. An inbound raid was met first with no fire, then ragged AAA as each ship started firing back. Flying a recon mission looking for a carrier, I found it, then buzzed and strafed it, then ran. About a kilometer away, the gunners opened up, and almost got both of us. This is about what I'd expect if I'd suprised the carrier, and the overall effect was very believable.

Another thing this taught me is to stay away from capitol ships unless I've got a LOT of friends with me. 2 x F4F-3's don't give the AAA gunners many targets to divide their fire amongst.

well i hate to be the one to ruin all the fun, but could you please not use words which some would consider offensive, for example "Those N***s are accurate!" many people are bothered by them, thank you.

sorry for my offensive language, just picked it up from my grandfather I guess cause he still hates the japanese to this day. For the other guys, you are right about the sleepy AI. I was flying a strike mission against a japanese carrier force and flew over them for almost 10 minutes and no AAA from 4 carriers and a couple support ships. Have no idea, but that one mission was pretty fun when I saw that tracer fire comin. I was like http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

"offensive language"

Lighten up Francis, if things like that bother you so much you have to post about it, you are going to have a tough time when you have to deal with people in real life.

i have had this problem to in campaigns NO ship aaa. sometimes very very rarely does at least one of my carriers or escorts open up AAA even then its only one of them out of 5 or 6. i have yet to have a enemy ship other than sub's shoot at me. in one mission i found two enemy carrirs with 5 or 6 zeros flying around them waiting to land.i shot all of them down then LMAO i landed on there carrier. thats all kinds of messed up hu? olge told me in an E-mail that in the upcomeing patch there will be a new dgen .ini file that will give you options to ajust the amount of ship AAA. at least thats how i read it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. so here is to hopeing

This sort of thing could be advantagious for setting historically accurate missions. For example, in the opening day of the Battle of Midway I read, that the Commander of the Japanese Carrier fleet ordered all escorts to withhold AA and AAA when the TB's were spotted approaching. He had the utmost confidence in his Zero CAP and felt that they could handle any attacks. At the time He thought he was only dealing with one carrier. He didn't know that airgroups from 3 US Fast Fleet carriers were baring down on him. From the after action reports from VB8 pilots, I don't recall them mentioning enountering any flak when they arrived, although they did have the Zeros trying to climb up to meet them as they dove on the carriers and they did experience some lite AA as they egressed through the escorts.

I expect that the Commander receded his order after loosing 2 carriers that afternoon.

Now, as for a Pearl Harbor re-enactment. I'm wondering how it can be set up so that the AA fires on friendlies? AA and AAA gunners were firing anything that was airvborne, once they realized what was happening, including their own planes. CV6 lost a few SBD's that were arriving during the attack to friendly fire as well as IJ planes.

OK, I have some d/l intensive screenshots so bear with me cause I took em in OpenGL with perfect terrain detail so the water looks real. Also, as to the Pearl Harbor gunners and shooting down friendlies, they also shot down a few Wildcats that came off the carriers to land at the base and check to see if they could help that night after the attack. I saw some stories about that stuff in one of the many Pearl Harbor history shows. Here's some screenshots from an attack by japanese bombers on one of the carriers in OpenGL. If you notice, the carrier is listing and there are bomb craters and burn marks on the deck and hull. WOW! *NOTICE* I haven't seen the damage modeling when bombed in DirectX mode so if you are looking for it, try OpenGL mode in your video settings! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/Bigpilot4u/carrier-3.bmp http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/Bigpilot4u/carrier-2.bmp http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/Bigpilot4u/carrier-1.bmp

Your right Bigpilot, the F4F's from CV6 also came under fire from US gunners. As well as any other US planes that may have went up to meet the IJ assault. Even as US planes took off to go looking for the enemy fleet in the next couple of days they still experienced some sparatic friendly fire.

This lack of aircraft ID skill was noted and addressed immediately with more extensive training of AA gunners and spotters. But, due to similarities in profiles between IJ and US planes, there would always be the occassional mis-indentification. On June 4, 1942, at Midway, when Yorktown sent up an intersept of incomeing enemy planes the pilots were ordered NOT to follow the attackers back into the landing circle. This was to insure that the gunnery crews didn't shoot at them by mistake as they defended against the attack.

Why would one fly in DirectX mode, ever? This game runs best in OpenGL.

I have always been using DirectX due to the fact that almost all games these days require it to be installed and this is the first game I have ever used OpenGL on. It looks much better in OpenGL though. I LOVE IT! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif BTW, what is a good sight to host screenshots in large format, because the shots I put on Photobucket got resized and you can barely see what I am talking about. Also, how do you make the screenshot file smaller? I can't figure it out.
