Just curious as to how many others are out there waiting patiently for the dedicated server... We at TX are anticipating the release and look forward to running 2, 3, or 4 stable servers for you all....

(note: this is not a flame topic...leave them outside please)

Waiting too... it might have a great impact on online servers, hopefully positive.

Yeah,TX is awesome. I have a very "noobie" sounding question though: Can someone explain to me just what a "dedicated server" is? I'm not exactly computer saavy,I'm afraid..../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

A dedicated server is one that runs the game in server mode. This means that there is no GUI for it, no graphics, no sounds, controls and that no specific player is needed to host the server.

They typically run as a DOS window only, you run the exe to launch it and then watch server events scroll by in the window. There is no 'game' per se.

The advantage of a dedicated server is that the host computer does not need a powerful graphics card since all it does is calculate game effects (in this case person A fired at person B from such and such plane at this location on the map), it does not have to calculate and render the corresponding graphics to show those effects...all that is handled by your machine.

While launching an FB server and walking away from it certainly does create a 'server', the session is still running the game and has to process all the graphics because it assumes that you are still sitting there about to take off and fight.

Additionaly most dedicated servers have a wide range of functionality that can be remotely executed, meaning that you can sit on one PC and tell another machine where the server is to do things like kick or ban.
