the inboard guns are inset about the same length as a 50 cailber cartridge or about 6 inches to allow space for the ammunition feed chute which fits in just behind the two for the two outboard guns. I wish that I could explain this better. A picture would be best. The inbord guns each had 400 rounds of ammo and the two outboard guns had 275 each. The ammo tray for the inboard guns sit just behind the trays for the 2 outborad guns which sit side by side. The tray for the outboard gun sits closest to it while the tray for the middle gun sits further away and has a feed chute going right over the outboard gun. I hope that I have explained it well enough. If not please send me an e-mail and I will look for a picture. I am always glad to help people better understand my favorite hobby and pastime, WW2 Aircraft.

The inboard gun sits back about 6 inches or so from the rest to allow room for the ammo trays for the outboard guns which sit side by side just in front of the ammo tray for the inboard gun. the outboard guns have 275 rounds each and the inboard guns had 400 rounds each. The larger feed tray sat behind the two smaller ones so the inboard guns are positioned accordingly.

no, it's the leading edge that is slightly "swept", so the two outer barrels point out while the ineer one doesn't reach that far. You can see it on some photos like these:

The inboard guns sit back about 6 inches or so from the outboard ones because of the way the ammo is stored in the wings. The ammo from the the two outbord guns is stored in two ammo trays which are side by side each containing 275 rounds. The ammo tray for the inboard guns sits right behind the trays for the other two and has 400 rounds. That is why the inboard guns sit back because the way that the ammo is stored.

ok that`s what i wanted a good picture thanks

Each P-51 was normally equipped with six .5 inch M-2 machine guns, with three in each wing firing outside the propeller. Each outside gun had 400 rounds of ammunition, while the inner two guns had 270 rounds each. The P-51 could also carry two 1,000-pound (454kg) bombs and up to ten 5-inch rockets

The wing is swept forward but the inner gun still sits back about 6 inches from the rest because of they way the ammo is stored for the inner guns
