How long will UBI/1C: Maddox & Oleg continue to support Forgotten Battles?

I have been giving this question and others considerable thought over the past Week or so. I have also been evaluating my involvement in this Sim and its community.
I can remember buying IL-2 and having a patch come out within the 1st week I bought the game. Over the following weeks/months there were many patches. I thought the support for IL-2 was terrific. (Even though it IMO crippled the IL-2 aircraft in the game.)
Any way on to my main point. Oleg has said there would for now be two add-ons for Forgotten Battles. One free and one Pay add-on. (In addition to the Patch to correct any bugs.) So we're looking at one patch plus two add-ons some time in the near future.
I have been reading some of the interviews that Oleg has given to different magazines recently and it appears that the 1c: Dev team are already beginning work on their next project. I think that is fantastic, they always turn out a good quality product and I applaud them for their efforts. However, my concern is that one day support for FB will stop all together much in the way that it has with IL-2.
So with that in mind I whole heartedly support Pay add-ons for FB. I personally don't have time to devote to any other online game. As it stands now I already devote 10 to 20 hours a week or more to this game and my friends in the 310th VF/BS. So I feel I don't have time to get involved with any other game. I plan to stick with FB for quite some time. The only way I would ever leave FB is if something 10 times better comes along .but I don't see that happening in the next 2 years or so.
So my question to Oleg would be- Are the going to be more pay add-ons for FB in the future? If 1c: Maddox continues to support Forgotten Battles..I am all for purchasing any add on aircraft, maps, or additions to the current product provided that we get a freebie every now and again. I really love this sim.and I will continue my support of it buy purchasing add-ons when they become available.Provided that the Developer continues their support for their product as they have always done in the past.
I see great thing in the future of this product as a stand alone product. I personally believe that pay for expansion packs are the way to go and are better for all parties involved. It benefits not only the developer, but the publisher as well by providing extended revenue for a product that they already have on the market. And the Fans/Consumers benefit by having continued support for a product that they already own. Quite simply pay for expansion packs are the best way to go. These are my thoughts on the subject. I'm not trying to open a discussion on the matter; I am simply making my feelings know on the subject. Some of you may agree, and I'm sure a great deal more will disagree. But the fact is I get a great deal of enjoyment for this sim and I would hat to see it go the way of the dinosaur. I am planning a major upgrade on my system so that I can have the maximum enjoyment for this game.
But I will never again purchase a product that I will have to spend extra money that I cannot afford for a product that will not work on my machine as advertised. Fb was a good investment, and the upgrades for this computer would have been needed eventually anyway. From the beginning, I was under the impression that FB would work on my computer as it was. Sadly this has not been the case. Also, I was under the impression that certain things would be included in the sim that were not present at the date of purchase. Here is a list of those things:
Flyable Aircraft:

P-51 Mustang
IL-10
Flying Mistel
German V-1 Rocket
TB-3 with detachable I-16's

There a few more things that I had expected but, at the moment they have slipped my mind.

This was a big disappointment for me, as a consumer. But as I have stated before I will continue my support for this product as long as the product is supported by the Developer & Publisher. Again these are just my own personal feelings & opinions on the matter. And I hope that some one in charge is listening.

Best Regards,

Some pretty good points brought up and it gave me some things to think about. Makes me have a few questions too.

Has there been any confirmation on what addons would be released and how they would be done. I don't mind paying a bit of money for an expansion pack if thats what it is but expansion packs are traditionally not huge sellers and you have to be careful with that. On the other hand, adding lots of extra content to the game for free isn't what I had in mind either.

You're list is pretty comprehensive (missed some things like the Hawker Tempest that we've seen stuff about for some time) but I think it was fairly clear that most of that stuff was going to be released after FB was released.

What what? I don't see anything thats hard to understand in there.

He's questioning how long people think FB will be supported and added to until Oleg and team really start pumping away at the next big flight sim game.

I'm saying that there's only so much you can do in addons and that they don't usually sell very well.

Thats the synopsis of the thread so far http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It's most likely that no IL2FB Pay ware add-on will never happen. Like any company 1C: Maddox needs to generate revenue to stay in business. The return on investment is very slight for add-on type of products. In any case Oleg has stated that development of the IL2 series will come to an end this summer with some of the modeling projects listed at IL2 Center possibly being be "rolled over" into a future sim. The IL2 game engine is several years old now and no-doubt Oleg and Co. are looking forward to "Bigger & Better Things" in the days ahead. After all IL2 has propelled 1C: Maddox Games from an obscure regional software company to the forefront of Flight Simulation development world wide. In any case IL2FB is pretty good as it stands! Personally I'd like to see Oleg develop a new Flight Sim covering the Korean War. Features to include would be a much stronger single player mode with aircraft models of 3 to 4 times the poly count of the ones in IL2. Six to ten flyable aircraft would cover the main Russian and US types quite nicely.

Untill they fix all of the issues, i'm not paying for an add-on.

Well, it depends how it all works out.

If they leave Il-2 behind because the time has come to move on to another engine, I hope they'll have the good sense to keep the Eastern Front as their main focus.

With the addition of the Mediterranean Sea, of course!

Well technically at this point there has been no support for FB. If the patch works out the kinks in the game then I would have no problem paying for future add-ons. I think this game has huge potential to be the best WWII flight sim to date but some things have to improve first. The thing a dislike the most is UBI's general lack of communication with their gaming community. The second thing is that they produced a good but flawed product and it doesn't seem like they are putting in the amount of effort they could be to fix those flaws. I guess I would say UBI is on probation and if things get better with the patch and free add-on then I will gladly pay for an expansion pack. If you make a good product AND take care of me as a customer you would be amazed at how much money I will shell out for your product.

FB will continue to be a viable game until something better comes out. In theory, this upcoming patch- along with the add-ons- will make this game appealing to just about anyone. The FMs and DMs should be really good after the patch, far surpassing anything out there or anything in the works that I have seen. It will have planes from nearly every country that played a significant role in WW2, and will have maps that cover areas besides the Eastern Front as well.

Unlike other games, FB has shown what a dedicated community can do for a game. Ubi does not host any official servers, and they do not organize scrims, etc... IMO, the support for this game comes 99% from the community and as long as we are all flying FB, FB will remain supported.

The reality of partaking in 1C Sims is that, if they release a free add on everybody gets it, and then if they release a pay for Add on and you do not purchase it yourself, then you will be amongst only the few who is not compatible Online with most others.

You will go and buy it then I can assure you ( chuckle)
Dont make the mistake of associating Pay for Add ons popularity with other Sims.

This Sim is the bench mark in the world today.

Doesn't have to be the case, actually.

If they dont change the code itself, but only add maps and planes in the addon, then you should still be able to play on the old maps with the old planes just fine.

As for FB reciving less support than IL-2 - remember, IL-2 had 4 patches to make it perfect, and I'm sure the last one was 6 months or later after the release. This time we get one, and that should fix quite everthing at once, so technically we are getting the exact same support in the exact same time.

Details about what will be payware and what will be free are still worked on, to my understanding.

Above all, remember that FB even in the unpatched version, is quite useable and playable. For the majority of people it runs okay from a technical/performance standpoint, and the gameplay elments are there as well.

Compare that to other sims that won't even run proberly on 50% of the systems...

I think IL2FB is THE BEST SIM on the market hands down. I'm a pretty avid simmer (I've got almost all and noone compete). All in all, there really aren't many real bugs if you think about it.

What I would like to see is the IL2 sim expanded to encompass the whole battle of europe (ala' CFS3 which failed). I mean, I've played a few US/UK v Germany missions and they're awesome! Imagine flying (esp in late '44) your Yak or Mig escorting IL2's and coming across a formation of B-17s escorted by P47's and P51's!! I know that did happen in real life (read the biography of John E. Johnson, highest scoring ace of the RAF in WW2).

Plus, I'm more into bombers than fighters and I'd love to do B-17 missions or B24/25/26 missions. The Med can wait! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I ,for one, prefer to see Oleg expand his whole flight sim development into one game. By that I mean, I was disappointed when I heard that "forgotten Battles" would be a stand alone game but then felt better when I realized it kept most of iL2 , the missions, planes, , skins, maps etc., were transferable. So I wonder if it's possible for any future game, "Fortress Europe" , "Mediteranean", "North Africa" or whatever he has on his table, to be linked to "forgotton Battles", so that we can go seamlessly from one map or theatre to another , without exiting one game and firing up another. Also, that we would be able to use our skins, etc., from FB in the "new" game. I don't want to spend another 2 months collecting skins.

FB is an extended IL2, but Oleg said the new sim will something different (less planes more detail)

With the other projects Maddox is working on, I think the "support" for FB will end relative soon (maybe one or two more patches if the addon has a major bug)

Maddox gives good support, but there is a (money) limit.
