View Full Version : Blue and red icons showing German and Soviet planes?

Hi,

As you can tell by my questions, I am a "newbie" when it comes to IL-2 (the original). My question comes from being in "Career" (Campaign) mode.

I signed up as a Soviet fighter pilot, and on my first mission, my teammates showed as red icons in the map view, whereas the Germans showed up as blue icons. Thus it was easy to find both friend and foe. In addition, the distance to each friend and foe showed in the sky or on the ground. After that first mission, however, the red and blue icons disappeared, and both friend and foe became black dots on the screen - no more blue or red icons on the map view.

My questions: Are those blue and red icons always supposed to be on the map view? If so, should I re-install IL-2? I have rebooted to no avail. The red and blue icons are no longer on the map, nor do I see the distance for friend and foe from the cockpit. I only see the black dots in the sky!

Thanks for any help!

Bob Riley

Make sure the "No Icons" difficulty setting is turned off.

Sounds like you are using the origanal version of IL2. Download 200mb's worth of patches/free upgrades and then you have the an outdated flight sim. Enjoy.

As we all know, the Soviet Union had too many fighter pilots during WW2. So Stalin's scientists came up with a brillient way to solve this problem. They would make some of their pilots fly British made Hurricanes. The Hurricane was an uber flying coffin. It was designed to maximize pilot kills by providing nothing but fabric and a few wooden spars around the cockpit. This setup prevented the pilot from escaping easily while at the same time not interfering with enemy bullets and shrapnel trying to pass through it. The rest of the Hurricanes structure was designed to ricochet bullets and shrapnel into the cockpit. And thanks to the cockpits superb design, all of them would pass through the cockpit and the pilot inside with little difficulty. Of course the Hurricane's designers didn't stop there. In order for the Hurricane to become a flying coffin, they had to make it easy to shoot. They did this by making the Hurricane the slowest monoplane fighter in use at the time and even gave it a very bulky shape so that it would be easy to spot and hit. The final feature of the Hurricane was its ability to bury or cremate itself. And because it was made of biodegradable materials, the Hurricane was environmentally friendly after it buried itself. Because of these brillient features, the Hurricane was a perfect flying coffin and helped the Soviets solve the pilot surplus they were suffering.

Just over 100MB actually. Go to http://www.3dgamers.com/games/il2sturmovik/ and get:

1.1a (73.4MB)
1.2 (28.4 MB).

Optional extra: 1.2ov (38.4MB) allows the use of edited or replacement recordings for the AI pilot voices. This patch is not required for anything else and only works correctly if installed after the other two patches.

Thank you to Tully, Killjoy and Major Death!

I did change my difficulty setting (and started a new career) by allowing icons (switched off "no icons"). That did it! Thus I was able to shoot down a Heinkel bomber after allowing the crew to parachute to safety in a nice prison camp.

And about the patches 1.1a and 1.2 - I have already ordered them from a game site, burned onto a CD.

Thanks again for your help.
