View Full Version : A tribute to an Iwo Jima Marine

As some of you may know, my grandfather fought with the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima. He landed on the first wave on Red Beach One, just beneath Mt. Suribachi. He valiantly fought on that tiny island for nearly 15 days until a mortar round nearly took off his legs. After many months of rehabilitation at Pearl Harbor he finished his time in the Marines occupying Japan before he returned home to his long waiting fiance, with both of his legs still in place. He still carries the pieces of shrapnel in his legs, settings off airport security metal detectors, and he will sometimes show his battle scars. I have very much respect for him having heard him tell the stories of his memories there and I had much to live up to. It was one of the proudest moments of my life to hear him say that he was proud of me and what I had done for this country while wearing the uniform.
As a tribute to he and my grandmother who are both still living, I have almost finished a portrait for them as a surprise gift for Christmas, his birthday and their anniversary as they all fall on the same month. No photo exists of him wearing all of his decorations, or the two of them together with him in uniform that I know of so I hope that this will be a truly special and memorable gift, something that you cannot buy. I have taken the time to draw something that they have never had and will hold hear. As I have said, I am not quite finished with it, the Purple Heart needs some work and other things just aren't quite done and I still need to make the frame and cut the glass but I just wanted to share this with the community. Please bear in mind that these are low quality photographs as the picture itself is too large to scan.

A special thanks goes to Snodrvr, polak5, Divine-Wind, berg417448, Scen, and JarheadEd for the help they gave me in researching the uniform from the photo I had of my grandfather taken in 1944 to make this drawing possible.

I didn't do much, but I'm glad I could help out a small bit with the uniform. I'm sure your grandfather will enjoy the surprise.
