I've just flown a few enjoyable missions from the 'Blue Max' sets available here:

And thanks to Brando for collecting WWI skins in one download at M4T http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Anyway, like a right old plonker I left radio chatter enabled...this set me to thinking. How are you going to communicate with your flight with no radio? I presume the graphic and control capabilities of KotS won't enable hand gestures.

I'm thinking online here - no probs pressing a command button offline (unless you want acknowledgements from your flight) will we be reduced to wing wobbles, or has anyone got any bright ideas? What would Boelke or Mannock have done? What do you guys doing the WWI thang do online?

Wouldn't work fairly - some bozo would tell his squadron that A = cover me, B = rejoin, C = return to base, D = break, etc, while I was still typing l-o-o-k-o-u-t-t-h-e-r-e-s-a-h-u-n-o-n-y-o-u-r-a-r-s-e.

Indeed ... however what about a com. menu similar to IL2's one (but with less choice obviously) which translate into having a little windows showing a hand signal showing up in a screen corner rather than a string been displayed ...?

That might work - how about for 'realism' this box graphic is only visible if your viewpoint is towards the pilot sending the message?

I like that m8 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif The best however will be to have the menu command to be binded to the pilot's 3D model so that it just raise its arm and move it (and his hand) accordingly ...

That would be ideal. But would the game engine be able to accomodate it? I presume it wouldn't eat up much processor power, it would just be a matter of animation.

You have raised some good points, sadly TS/Ventrilo remains so it will be hard to fully immerse.
Hardcore simmers however...

I seem to recall reading that the Verey pistol was used quite frequently to signal turning manoeuvres and regrouping for flights of aircraft, as well as identifying oneself to one's own Archie batteries. That doesn't however cover dogfight situations.

It's worth noting that many of the 'aces' didn't fly in company, or sometimes in pairs. Pilots like Nungesser, Guynemer, Ball, Mannock and Rickenbacker were all noted for flying off alone on patrol - and Billy Bishop's famous solo attack on a German airfield on June the 2nd, 1917 is legendary.

As stated, TS & Ventrillo will only subtract from realism - but when it's a matter of on-line fun between mates then I guess there's not much harm in it. Outside views will be the killer as far as realism is concerned I think. Oh, and icons. Bearing in mind that many kills were gained by switching the engine off and gliding down onto an unsuspecting enemy's six, it's obvious that views and icons will negate that tactic.

I can't hardly wait for this to come out - but I only expect to fly with and against good mates, or just off-line. The idea of flying in IL2 arcade-type DF arenas is not at all my cup of Rosie Lee.

Wing-waggling, hand or whole-arm signals (like the infantry's) and aerobatics were the only real means of communication available. Flares, as above, had their place but would obviously be likely to attract unwelcome attention from any enemy nearby.

Thanks for the skins mention - I hope to get around to releasing a couple more WW1-style missions quite soon

Some here who scream the loudest about supposed Il-2 cheats, will have no hesitation in using comm cheats in KotS.

well that was pre-emptive...eh?

pilots in the great war used hand signals - they also would blip the motor..depending on how far away the E/A was....or they would wing waggle...they might also fire a short burst to let an oblivious wingmate know he was being bounced....

You don't necessarily need to model the hand gestures - they could be simulated using the chat window, both online and offline - but getting the AI to understand a motor blip or two or a wing waggle and making that noise or motion a que to a specific action might be tough - I dunno.

I look forward to seeing how Gt solves it though

I'm sure it will be like most previous WWI sims where you press a key for Attacking, Rejoining, 2nd Wing drop below or above, heading home, etc.. Red Baron had commands that would give out instantaneously when you pressed the correct key, no drop down menu like in IL2, which was nice because you could give commands out very quickly.

Grand Prix Legends, if you hit the spacebar in the sim it raise your drivers arm, the AI do this to warn if their car has a problem and to look out but almost everyone online used it to put their fist in the air at other drivers bad driving or when they crossed the finish line in first place http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif . So if you can give commands to your AI squad mates by keypress, I'm pretty sure in this day in age we will get acurate hand signals showing up on the pilot models that will bode well for the online engagements besides the offline, and then maybe that message can be displayed at the top of the screen such as *Low_Flyer tells his squad to attack or some such thing. Maybe it only gets displayed to allied planes that are in a certian vacinity of your own plane.

Either way, as long as these are clickable options it will be good, as I suspect most people when flying online will want a chatbox like in IL2s even if its not that real, because flying online is a very social affair and to organize attacks youd need to have a briefing room before you start your flight, and we all know nothing this organized will ever happen on pick-up servers. Plus nothing stopping people from using teamspeak, as stated.

Dear All,
I have said this before,but I don't see the problem about using comms in KOTS. My main reason for this is that at the moment the visual window that we have (TIR) comes nowhere near what the human eye can see - virtually all round vision with combined head and eye movements. The screen also does not have the visual acuity of the human eye. Further, you youngsters out there will have far better eyesight than us oldies, so having an unfair advantage. So I think that online comms will go far to regress this situation (considering that pilots of WWI were too old at 30). Thus us oldies will have a better chance of surviving a combat and if we enjoy it, will be far more likely to spend our mulah on a copy of KOTS.

I'll use comms...period.

How many people that played MOH or COD online used comms? It's a known fact that there were very few radioman and the ones that were there didn't communicate with other squads. But you used them online, didn't you.

Use comms and have more fun.
