I remember months before the original IL-2 was released and even before the official il2sturmovik.com website was put up, there was an IL-2 forum where we eagerly awaited for Oleg's weekly dev. update and where we asked him questions about this awesome game. I think the forum was purple and black or something. Anyway, who else remembers this?

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.

I remember the day the first demo came out. Played horribly.

Yes, it was still the old BlueByte forums, was it not? I remember looking forward to updates all the time and my excitement for someone doing a Eastern Front flight sim at last. I always had a great interest in Soviet WWII aircraft and I even had the winter scenery and other Soviet add-ons for EAW installed - a dedicated East Front sim seemed like a dream before then. I also remember how Oleg had to fend off all the criticisms of people believing that nothing will come from his sim since no-one outside Russia would ever buy a flightsim without P-51s and Spitfires...

I've been here since the Canadian release of IL2. The GD and Tech forums were the only two in existence and since there were no Mods, Stormin' made regular appearances to keep everyone in check.

I used to really enjoy the place. It was a great place to share your enthusiasm for the game, but it was also fun too.

O tempora, o mores

Nope not me. First I saw it was in the shop.
I thought, "What the heck is Sturmovik?" and ignored it. How foolish I was. It took 6 months before someone on the net advised me to get it!

Right now I'm on the 'American Civil War: Total War' forums.

Oleg was publically working on Il-2 nearly a year(?) before even Bluebyte agreed to distribute it (which was a year? before Ubi squeaked Bluebyte).

Oh the days of Bombsaway.net, and the Dogfighter.com forums (thanks again Phaetn and Ham, I still miss that place!), when Oleg made outrageous promises like 'random trees alongside rivers' or posted lists of hundreds of ground units to be included, or said things like 'yes, break padlock in clouds, this is good idea, we already implemented it', or 'we don't plan on FW190 with release, but we will work hard to try'. The man was a machine, and posted daily, plus responded to 100's (if not 1000's) of emails. I suppose even machines can be worn down by the boundless energy of the young.

How few remain.
