View Full Version : Random Game Freezes

I searched all current 16 pages of threads, but yet have been able to find a resolution to this issue, and it's really frustrating since I'm really enjoying this game so far. What happens is that the game freezes. Sometimes there is an audio looping and sometimes there isn't. I don't know how much info I should put here since sometime's there's a response and sometimes there isn't. The only way to get out of the freeze is to hard boot the pc. I'll start with my specs:
ASUS M3A79-T MB
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz Processor
GeForce GTX 260 PCIx Video Card
4 GB Corsair Dominator RAM
Muchkin 650W Power Supply

At first I had my Riva Tuner enabled for my graphics card, then saw a post that said the game didn't like an overclocked graphics card, so I disabled the overclocking, which appeared to help a little, but I would still get a freeze every now and then, and if I didn't save often, I would lose all my progress from the last save, and we all know how frustrating that can be.

Then I read something about audio causing some crashes and the fix was going into the control panel, then Hardware and Sounds and adjusting some setting to 16 bit compatibility. I'm thinking that's a Vista resolution and I have XP and there isn't an icon in the the control panel that says Hardware and Sounds, but Sounds and Audio Devices. But I couldn't find anything in there that allowed me to set something to 16 bit compatibility. First I tried lessening the Audio Accleration to the Standard setting, but then I got a blue screen. I tried another setting I found that disabled digital sound output. That may have helped, I don't know, but I'm still freezing randomly, if not quite as often. And like I said it's frustrating as hell as I'm really enjoying this game. In the beginning I also tried a few settings within the Nvidia control panel that I picked up from this forum to 1, let the application decide with the 3D perfomance or quality, then to let the application decide about anisotropic filtering. None of the resolutions have thus far totally resolved the issue. Has anyone got any other ideas??

Well, just as an update, for anyone who might have a similar problem, I might have found my resolution, and of course it's an easy one. For XP. In the control panel, in Sound and Audio Devices Properties, then Speaker settings click the Advanced button, the Performance tab. There are two sliders, the default setting is Full for Hardware acceleration, and Best for Sample rate conversion quality. First I tried lowering the Hardware acceleration, that didn't resolve my issue. But the other day I lowered the Sample rate conversion quality to Good, and I've been playing crash free ever since. Hope this helps some others.

Edit:
Well, I just may have jinxed myself. Two freezes in the last 5 or 10 minutes. I'm beginning to believe it's my onboard sound. I have the latest and greatest driver, and I doubt they will come out with an update for it since the board is over a year old, and it seems to be stable for most other applications. Might be time to invest in a sound card.

I don't think it's your onboard sound. Since I got this game back in july, I've had random freezes and crashes, just like those you've described.
Turning the sound completely off (in the AUDIO.SCR config files with the NOSOUND parameter) didn't help. When freezing, the game would sometimes display yellow/red artifacts on the upper side of the screen... So I think it's definitely a problem related to our (nvidia) graphic cards.

It will happen anytime, and the only (partial) solution I found to play without having to reboot every 5 minutes was to run it in windowed mode. This didn't fix the problem though, as the freezing still happens.

My specs:
C2D E6750 @ 3Ghz
8800 GT 1gb (x2, though SLI is turned off)
2gb DDR2
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
Win XP SP3
latest drivers and all

Can't say that I've noticed any yellow or red artifacts during any of my freezes. I had the exact same problem with Call Of Duty Modern Warfare. The solution that helped the most but not totally, was to use Riva Tuner to lower the memory clock setting used on the memory of the graphics card. That did nothing for this game, and I'm really not sure it did any good in CODMW. I just might have gotten by a segment of the game where the conflict was the worst. I ordered a sound card the other day and I'll post here if it helps or not. I've never heard of problems with NVidia cards, that appears to be what most developers test the games on. The ATI cards are the ones that appear to have most of the conflicts with games, at least for the games I play.

Major, have you tried running the game with the NOSOUND switch (which you can add by editing the audio.scr config file) ? Does the game still crash then ?

I'm pretty sure this freezing problem is due to the game engine, as I don't experience these kind of problems with any other games, except for some rare heat related artifacts, which a quick alt-tabbing usually resolves...

I wanted to give everyone a quick update, as I finally managed to finish the game and did not experience a single freeze or crash in the last five levels, which was definitely a great improvement http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What did the trick ? As I suspected, it was most probably a heat issue with my 8800 GTs. I used Rivatuner (www.guru3d.com) to set the fan speed of my graphic card to 100% and that did it !

I also changed the sampling quality from optimal to good (Control panel>sound>speaker advanced settings>performance) but I'm not sure it had an impact.

All in all, COJ2 was a very enjoyable game although it had some flaws due to consolitis (disappearing corpses, pop-in vegetation and annoying hud icons (the floating hats especially) which it would have been nice to see fixed in a patch...

Just wanted to let you know that getting a new sound card did not resolved the issue. Although my freezes seem to be few and far between, I'm going to try your fix of paying with the fan settings.

hey guys. just thought id throw this out. got this game and it was giving me crap didnt even really want to play it because i had to restart so much. but then i messed around in the graphic settings. have everything on the lowest it can possibly be.. but i jacked the refresh rate up to 85. try that and see if it works. i have been playing for about 5 hours and no problems. made my account so i could write this :P
