Well, the Golodnikov interviews should be known in the forum by now, since they also provide firsthand info about several planes (I-16, hurricane, P40, P39 and so on).

Golodikovs and Kozhemyakos intervievs should really be stickied with other valuable ones from all sides IMO.

Kozhemyakov interview is also posted here in orr.

Thank you for the link!

I had lost that and not remembered enough to find it in a search.

Also very good stuff.

I have an older AC book that describes the Russian Aces who went around demonstrating and
teaching how to fly the I-16 right. They would tie colored lines between the wings of the
planes and fly maneuvers in formation. The lines were still unbroken when they landed.
That was a plane well known for being stubborn difficult to fly and spin easily by so many
the nickname was Mule. Those Aces changed the reputation to the proper name Hawk. But if
I was a digger of short quotes, I might find someone wrote how bad it was and then make
that a sig quote to influence people wrongly. I-16 was really very good for the times it
was made. Only problem for I-16 is the war did not come right then.

Golodnikov makes some interesting comments.
Also pointing out how much pilotskill means.

One example:

"A. S. Did anyone compare the Cobra with our own aircraft?

N. G. Yes, even I did that. I flew a training engagement in the Cobra against a Yak-1. Three flew against me and in all three cases I got behind the Yak.

A. S. So the Yak was not as good an airplane?

N. G. I was a better pilot. I had great experience and a feeling for my fighter. My opponents were young. Had I been flying the Yak and they been in the Cobra, I would have done the same. Later the division commander said to me, €œWhat are you doing? Give the guys a chance to believe that their airplane is also good! They won€t understand why you beat them!""

I remember reading the interview some years back and I thought: wow, everything about the strenghts and shortcomings of planes he flew right to situations in combat and what he had to do to fight the Luftwaffe fighters, all that stuff I had experienced myself in IOW/VOW with il2/il2fb !
Then I really thought much higher of this game , because it really brings you in simmilar situations (with proper missiondesign of course)

I can only say every pilot here should read the interviews, this is especially true for those who fly for RED side!

A very enlightening read, thank you for posting, F19_0b http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

After reading both, one can only think...
'how could they stand the questioning style of the interviewer?' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I find this bit humorous, it's Golodnikov being questioned for the nth time if they did training in double-seaters:

A. S. When did you begin with the Cobra? On what types of Cobras were you trained? Did you have two-seaters?

N. G. You and the two-seater! No, we did not have a two-seater!

Golodnikov's particularly, even more than Kozhemyako's, is a treasure of brilliant quotes to be sprinkled around the forums http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Now seriously, it's excellent read, both aces are speaking their minds, IMO. And their minds learned and know(knew?) a lot, that shows.

I did look for the dates of the interviews but may have skipped them... When were the interviews done, and how old were they at the time? not mentioned in the homepage.
Someone can say?

loved the interview... made me look at the I-16 and the P-40 differently... I'm going to certainly try to implement what I learned from those to my way of fying online... maybe I'll even score more kills http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

PS: I was very surprised to read about how easily the Germans abandoned their bombers in favor of getting kills and moola... ****.
