It's unfortunately more common than we'd like. I heard a report recently of a couple from South Korea neglecting their child because they were playing Starcraft. The baby died.

I wish they'd quit putting blame on factors that should not matter.

These folks neglected their kids because they were simply bad parents. If it weren't video games causing all of society's woes, what would be? Gardening? Gambling? Music? Afterall, if they neglect their children by playing games, are you really sure you WANT that sort of person to be rearing children?

It's a complex question and is getting too far out of hand IMO. Again, the blame lies with the parents - nothing else.

I'm betting these people would not be stellar parents regardless of their obsessions. If video games didn't exist they'd be down at the bingo parlor or getting gussied up for the trailer park social.

OMG, that can't be accurate! There's got to be something more than video game addiction to cause parents to neglect children as bad as those children were. Something is missing here...

I agree with the fact that it may not be the video games entirely. There is definitely something else going on here. That couple was not mature or responsible enough to have children in the first place. They had no sense of what they were even doing to their kids until someone intervened, then they realized and pleaded guilty, which I am glad they did. I hope that everything turns out ok for the youngsters and that the parents will get the help that they need, even if it is behind bars.

You know what. that comment was un called for.
I know some damn good ppl who live in manufactured houseing communites. So that's kinda a Bullsh*t Comment there Crash.
Some of those things are going for over 85,000 each. And some of them are better than most conventioal homes if the same size. (Keep in mind though that in nthe reqion of the country a home you'ld pay 700,000 for up north or out west you could get for 300,000 grand or under.)
So 80, grand for a moble home is the top of the line tripple wide model.
So the Trailer park scocial commentweas kinda f*cking stupid if you ask me.

Probably better than the 400,000$ cardboard boxes and the even more expensive cardboard condos slapped together during the mortgage bubble.

Having grown up in a "manufactured home" community before clawing my way through college and out of that ****-hole I'd say Crash is right on http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif I never see anything near the levels of inhumanity in my cookie cutter suburban neighborhood that I now happily own a beautiful home in compared to what I was surrounded by growing up. Cops in there at all hours of the day, rampant addiction, physical and sexual abuse, crime - far from unwarranted he hit the nail on the head. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

not necessarily. there have been a few cases where people addicted to online role playing games have died because they couldn't, or wouldn't stop. I remember one case where this guys had been playing World of WarCraft for so long that he just withered away and then died from lack of nutrition, etc... he never went out and his friends tried to make him stop but he wouldn't.

so take that, and mix in a couple of children and it's easy to see what will happen. I was disgusted reading that article.

I'm not blaming video games, it's clear that the people involved just didn't know any better or didn't care which makes me really angry and sad at the same time. I was glad to read the kids are doing fine now, gaining weight.

I also think that titling your article with "video games cause neglect" or "music causes..." shows a different kind of irresponsibility from journalists... it's bull****.

+1

It's called sensationalism and it sells. Sometimes I think that our free press forgets that the price of freedom is responsibility.

Just look at the embarassing coverage of jail bound socialites or, heck, the lead stories on the local news.

"Your children are in mortal danger! More at eleven..."

or

"Upscale trailer park sues for defamation!"

It's all designed to provoke an emotional reaction to a non-issue for the purpose of making money. Before long...everybody is up in arms over nothing and when a real issue rears its ugly head its buried in the background noise.

Agreed. It`s not the video game. Any GOOD parent will never allow a game or anything else to get in the way of the first and most important priorities. A good parent will not fail to feed and care their children even if presented with gold bars not to!

Bad parents like that probably use video games as an excuse to help lessen their actual punishment for what is their lack of care to their children.

It`s that simple.

p.s. Waldo pepper`s article makes me happy again. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
