View Full Version : Scripts are banned.

Ubi technical administration have decided that scripting will no longer be permitted in posts. Users are asked not to attempt to circumvent the scripting ban.

Reasons include the following:
- Scripts can apparently be a source of security problems.
- Poor scripting often results in forum pages or threads not displaying properly.

I apologise for the delay in making an official announcement.

Ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear,
Ye Jacobites by name,
Your fautes I will proclaim,
Your doctrines I maun blame, you shall hear!

What is Right, and what is Wrang, by the law?
What is Right, and what is Wrang?

What makes heroic strife famed afar?
What makes heroic strife ?

scripts are when posters used to hack the website to make themselves stand out

How bout ubi provides some new avtars for us instead of the my first coloring books ones they currently offer. Would be nice if the community could create about 100 or so send them to ubi and have ubi add them in so we can choose nicer aviation related ones. BTW why do the german and french forums allow scripts and not us tully? Kinda messed up and ever since the script junk has been blocked the forums have seemed to been running terrible

What??? Scripts are bad? I think scripts are a LOT less EVIL and DISGUSTING than posting self images and scaring people with that eyebrow Greg.

Seriously. What kind of vain maniac would do that?

Look at some nice work out there..Michapapa for example. I would MUCH rather see that than your MUG!

Like it or not, scripts were never intended for the public to use. I warned posters that someday UBI would crack down on hacking but they didn't listen. They scoffed at me instead. Look who's laughing now.

RBJ you are such a stupid moron. A script is a piece of code written on client side , which means that they exist and can be seen in the page itself if we reffer to scripts banned now. Other scripting languages are as we know , php , asp , jsp etc. These require a server technology , usually included in the http service connector such as iis , apache (with php) , tomcat (with jsp) and for those you , as a client you don't have access. The banned scripts , Javascript I believe , they cannot write on a machine , to be more precise a browser cannot write onto a speciffied machine , the browsers were designed like that. There are security holes , that's true , but this is highly dependant on technology used and the programming done by the web developers , so far UBI proved that they suck in both. I think that the scripts were banned because it took long for this page to load , fine by me , but I hope that this board will work better. Just my 0.02 euros

How come mine's started working again then?

Scripts still work reliably here though:

This would also make a good location for an Off Topic forum.

Okay, so I'm gonna comment.

We want the scripts to make the forum more colorful. There are a number of things you're not allowed to do on these forums, most of which make sense. You should not be allowed to hack the site (in the real sense of the word: locking threads or whatever, I dunno) by use of scripts. That ought to simply lead to punishment for whomever is caught, not a ban on scripts preventing those who want to add a color scheme and be able to use FB graphics in their header. Old hat: the irresponsible actions of a few should not restrict the freedom of the rest.

If the scripts are causing the forum pages to get completely messed up (I don't mean that sometimes another poster's color scheme is accidentally changed in one post due to another's script), and they are seriously slowing the forum access down, then I can understand why they shouldn't be used. I am tempted to write this in a +2 size font: If banning the scripts speeds up the forum considerably, then I am reluctantly for it. If the forum access is not considerably improved due to removal of scripts, then I will be seriously put out.

Was that a rant?

Regards,
Mike

This ruling applies not just to the IL2 forums, it is completely across all the English language forums. I believe that the French and German forums are under the auspices of a different crew of technical administrators, how they handle the issue on their forums is up to them.

I'm not entirely pleased about it either, I quite liked my custom colour scheme, but it makes my modding job easier. I often had to edit posts that had quoted other posts (including a couple by Ubi staff /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) because the quoted script was broken by the hyphens and line breaks, shutting down the rest of the thread. I won't have to worry about that any longer /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

IAFS_Painter, commie1 used a script. Look at the source code for the page.

carguy, I'm sure commie1 would like to have a few words with you, mate. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-wink.gif Your quitting might be a good personal solution, but it certainly won't help anyone who stays.

I wish I could think of a way to get around this, but it's the kind of executive decision that I'm afraid will stick, no matter how much I disagree with it.

I guess the best I can do is put some background color in my sig.

Yeah, it's funny. I had a basic script for a few months, then on Monday I spent a couple hours reworking it and I thought it looked okay. I guess I'm mainly sore that I have to look at that stupid icon instead of my P-39 cockpit.

If they made a P-39 icon available I'd be happier. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Forum is still slow to load and thats on a T1. The page often timesout so goodness knows what is going on with the server.

Not a very good advert for UBI, if their forum software is rubbish, what are the games going to be like....?

If removing the scripts means that there are no more errors with the forum and trying to access it thats a small thing to loose.

Tully,

thanks for your reply,

As someone who buys in Forum software for my own clients and then configures it to run (always PHP/MySQL) I can understand that UBI doesn't write forums, but any old Joe Public coming along would see a forum that goes down more times a day than a high class Hoe and this reflects badly on UBI.

If there are issues between UBI and the software company then this needs to be sorted out quickly.

If its a case of the Database not handling the requests, upgrade it or add more redundent nodes to the cluster.

If the software can't handle the requests, bin it and use PHP/MySQL

I assume (and this is only based on the errors and the quantity of errors) that this forum is run on a Windows box, probably Windows 2000 Server Pro running IIS/5.0 using ASP to connect to the db.

Cpt-Madcowz,

You're talking to the wrong guy. Not that Tully's not smart, but he's "just a moderator." You could make a professional offer to Ubi, maybe you could fix their problems, though I guess they've got a team and will stick with them.

You're not the first one to note problems with the forum, of course. I guess you'd know better, but I do appreciate that Ubi keeps the forums up and running, even if they're not the most efficient they can be. I don't associate forum software with game software, Ubi doesn't develop either of them as far as I know...

Cheers,
Mike

i agree

i previously was for the removal of scripts partly due to a few sickening colours that were starting to creep into posts but now with them gone i realise that many people had really good, distinctive avatars which added alot more than garish colours to the character of the user/post, so i think that this feature should be included ( - although i have no idea how hard this would be to implement)

I do hope you didn't think I was attacking you. Was just getting a little bored waiting for the pages to refresh, having to re post because of some obscure ASP error and all the other nonsense that goes on with these creaky ASP forums.

Well, RBJ, Although "hacking" is a bit stronger of a word than "script", and probably less accurate, your explaination still gives someone like me an idea of how they work. Not all of us have a B.S. in computer language, so the technical explainations, although appreciated, do little to help an ordinary user like me to understand. I just wanna post my stuff, fly my game, and make friends, not earn a new degree. I'll go back to college if I decide to change my occupation. Thanks RBJ /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Soon we'll be allowed no images... let's have an all text forum.

If someone creates a thread asking what the hell a script is and then it gets locked because it is considered off-topic....

Then shouldn't an actual thread about scripts be locked?

Just Saying.

PS. It would appear by the tenor and tome of the community members posting today that there is some wee-bit of discontent.

Yes Helos you are quite right there is alot dicontent here lately. I have a few theories about this.

1) They want our money, and continually take away from our community, yet they still want our money.
2) I rather doubt that scripts were creating such a problem that they had to be banned here, these forums have always been slow and buggy. But I am no expert, so I could be wrong.
3) The locks are out of control here, I have been posting here less and less because nobody has fun here anymore.
4) False promises in regards to the patch has made all of the above even worse. I remember when they said 4/20, then in couple of weeks, so many times that I hear it in my sleep. Not that waiting for the patch and having it be right from the start bothers me. Just don't promise it and then not deliver, don't give dates or time frames because that is weak. Just say we are wroking on it, we will let you know when it is done.
5) It seems to me they are betting on LOMAC and are trying to sweep us out like rubbish as we are no longer needed.

I couls be really wrong, but that is how I feel and unless having an opinion is now banned here I bet I am not the only one who feels that way.

My 2 legit cents on why scripts were banned.

People were editing information they shouldn't have been, such as there rank and name. This was a dumb idea. I think if it would have just been avatars and colors all would be about 12% right with this forum.

hmm shyt, doesn't work... scripts are so vital for my sig /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif . That's not only the colors, icon and bar... Also had those counters and a popup-on-click link for my system specs...

I want Ubi to upgrade their forum software. There's a much more recent version available of this one. I could swear I read something like "customize the appearance of your posts" on lithium's site... It would be so c00l if we could alter our post colors, backgrounds etc in "my preferences" instead of using scripts...

It's been MONTHS since I received any Search response other than:

"Your search request took too long. This can happen if you search for very common words or the Data Server is very busy. Please try again with different criteria."

I would think that with the castration of the Signatures and the "final Solution" for the 'script' colors/avatars, this so-called forum would be "ROCKIN'" in terms of speed and efficiency and service! That is sort of what UBI/Admin/Moderator types Implied, if not Specifically promised.

Why Isn't it?? Why Isn't itROCKIN', after all these Imposed Restrictions/so-called Improvements??
Could it be that neither the Sig Blocks NOR the Script colors/avatars have ANYTHING to do with the poor operation of this forum?? Is ANYone in authority ANALYZING the problem??? Or are the authorities all 'fanning' the six-gun, shooting from the hip, jus' hopin' for Sumpin' to work???

I think the answer to that question is obvious, Empirically so, based on at least a year's worth of data/observation...

I am not b*tchin', whatsoever.... Just would like a well-thought out, statistically supported, response/justification from an UBI admin or moderator type, for the changes which have achieved NOTHING, other than to start driving away MANY folks from this forum.

I've today deleted my "script" sig....reluctantly...JUST so I could make a single post! When scripts are allowed again, it will probably take me a Week or more to get that script re-inserted correctly into my profile Sig... We all know how Touchy 'script' can be!

SO, in summary, the Questions are:

1.Why doesn't Search work with any consistency at all!?

2.Why is this forum So troubled/Slow, even after all these so-Called necessary Improvements/Restrictions!?

3.*****And, most importantly,What Actually has been accomplished(and can be documented with ANY Facts/Statistics) by the virtual elimination of colors and personalized avatars, let alone by the earlier castration a few months ago of the larger personalized signatures?

Someone up there at the top of Administration should stand back and look at the forest, not at the individual trees and ground cover(avatars, colors, script).Perspective and judgement reap Great Rewards.

Then again, plunging ahead(?) has a remote possibility of workinge...perhaps the forum SHOULD be converted back to a black and white (not even the current dull greyscale)Text-only, DOS-ONLY, "BBS" format of yesteryear. Anyone else remember back to Those Early days on the internet hiway???? IF that would improve the forum/Bulletin Board response and performance, then Do it...Please.

DOS:Sort of a Hollywood, "Back-to-the-Future" approach to problem-solving, perhaps...???

Nothing else implemented by UBI in the past 3-4 months has made a single IOTA of difference...Just continuing to Drive away the UBI forum community members, it seems

So, give it a try: C://Dir/ or was it C:\Dir: or D; cd C/ Heck... I can't recall...gonna have to get out the old DOS text book, I Guess... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Humbly submitted for consideration...

I use it all the time, but it never works first time. Usualy takes 5-10 attempts.

- I would think that with the castration of the
- Signatures and the "final Solution" for the 'script'
- colors/avatars, this so-called forum would be
- "ROCKIN'" in terms of speed and efficiency and

-

Neither the scripts nor the sigs have anything to do with the forum SQL error messages, nor were either of them claimed to be. Both have been restricted for other reasons.

This board is going to the dogs

Can we have a more configurable board
Or standard scripts that can be copied and pasted into your sig that you only need to alter the colours in?!!

Can't say I noticed any errors with the scripts, well none that weren't there before everybody started playing with them
Just disable script debugging in your browser and everything will be fine!!!

Looks like we're heading to a text only board...how boring

Bah. I was going to write a long post on this, but why bother? Ubi has repeatedly proven it can't handle this community or this game, so maybe it's time they gave it over to a company who can.

At least 1C:Maddox Games is an independent developer so Ubi can't tank it to much.

Perhapse Ubi is feeling a bit uneasy at the potential prospect of producing a game set in the Mediterranean and North African theater that they'll have no content control over?

Too bad they are totally gone--they added some color and character to the forums. I wish there was a way to ban script abusers, but allow those who tested their non-invasive scripts prior to posting here to continue.

Give us at least color control. It made it a lot easier to scan a thread for my last post so I can pick up reading from there.

That's why I always use a picture.

My script was great!

As I mentioned before, my browser is still registering script errors on this page even with user scrips being banned

Time to think again maybe

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! if a bit of HTML scripting can crash your box, then you know much less about systems than you claim to.

RBJ, you're a full-time dork that knows very little, but feels free to comment on matters way beyond your comprehension.

I wish that I could still run my script, but unfortunately that's not the case.

You're such an ignoramus for someone who claims to have a knowledge of technical issues.

Ever heard of HTML, or tabulation?

I thought not.

Go back to playing with your slider, that's all you're good for these days./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif
