View Full Version : Nipping at the convoy

I have spent the past two days shadowing a convoy. I came upon them at dusk and spent the entire night sneaking up under the cover of darkness and sinking one or damaging a ship. One was left still afloat smoking and making some knots so it was easy to pick them back up after diving from the escort. This game of tag went on all night into the next day. Currently I'm still on the heels of the convoy grabbing a sheep or two when I can silently get in range. Currently I'm coming up on 24 hours on this cat and mouse game. This is he first time I have been able to track a convoy with a full complement of torpedos. I would have to say the escort in the game are good. The smoking lagger was paced by a corvette for protection. I have still yet to sink the darn thing. I just leave it alone for now because it is my beacon when I far off shadowing. Since GW this game has taken on a new life. Currently I have 3 fish left but have sunk only 4 ships. OK, I'm not the best shot but sinking 4-5 is about the best most U-boats managed in the real world. Also, many times a ship could still make headway after a torpedo or two so I do not feel bad about that at all! I had to surface to the real world after 5 hours of play just to see what day it was and reintroduce myself to the wife and kids again. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Sounds very familiar. This game has serious immersion and should carry a warning about the damage it can do to your social/family life! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yah I hate it when you get a torp into a nice fat tanker and then have to play tag with the escorts and by the time you loose them the tanker is gone.

In frustration the other day I used a 4 torp spread on a destroyer and hit it, but of course it just ran away and I did not get the kill.

No doubt not getting the kill sucks. The smoker did make a nice beacon though!

In GW you can hit a destroyer and it survives?!
Was it a contact or magnetic hit?
Sounds like a very challenging damage model.

I have to say any warship I hit went down. Plus they explode into some nice fireworks as the magazine ignite. But like any other ship I guess they could take a hit and still steam ahead. It was possible in the real world and it would seem to be the same in the GW mod. I do not use the magnetic, always contact on the torpedos. If I'm risking my neck along with crew and an expensive U-boat...I want to make sure I get the job done!

A thing that works for me is to set the torpedo depth fairly deep, (no more then 10 meteres) set the pistol to impact and fire away. This tends to flood it a bit faster, hit a C2 right and she'll go down in one.

Yah I was at periscope depth, stationary or moving at 1 or 2 knots, and it was doing a slow sig zag right at me at about 11 knots.

I was so peeved that I had lost a nice fat juicy tanker that I waited for it to get to me.

I did a 4 shot spread with magnetic as the pistol at only about 3 meters deep, I know it should have been deeper for a mag pistol but I wanted to double my chances that I may actually hit the side and get the impact pistol as well.

I waited until a zig and I shot at it, and one contacted right in the bow. It was smoking and on fire midships and it just turned tail and ran.
