View Full Version : level bombing enquiry

Hope this has not been discussed before, but would anyone out there give a few pointers to whether I am doing anything wrong because I find using the bombsights very difficult. I recall enjoying Mighty 8th which, lamentably, does want to run on my system. Within 1946 I find you seem to have to use the sight and control the flight independently. I know the Norden sight on American bombers worked, effectably, as an auto-pilot, the pilot switching control to the bombadier. In Sturmovik:1946 and previous versions, even if you set waypoints for the PC auto pilot to follow, it still goes off course and trying to fly the plane while looking through the sight is virtually impossible. I put my hands up hear..I KNOW I'm doing something wrong!, but I woulld welcome some advice on what I am missing...I have read the notes by the way, and run the bombing/sight controls through a nostromo gamepad so the set up is very user friendly. By the way 1946 is awesome, I have been critical of some of the patches since the PF/AEP/FB merger but 1946 is fantastic.

It's old and dated but still fairly accurate.

Thor made an excellent guide for the battle-fields community. It covers everything from tactics to sight use.

Just to say many thanks for the help and avice received. I am more of a fighter boy than a bomber driver, but bomb aiming from altitude has opened up a whole new vista for me! Still a few glitches, bombs going when auto-bomb off (you are busy setting the height, velocity, etc only to find that the bombs left the plane some time ago! Maybe it is still me doing something wrong, give me a single seater anytime!

That's why its best to set your desired speed and altitude before you even take off. Also, if you have a bomb button mapped hitting it at any time will drop the bombs as well.

Many thanks for all the help. I have a button for bombdrop on stick (realised this will override the bombsight). The bombsite auto-drop releases all the bombs in the bay, is there a way of limiting this or altering the way bombs are dropped? Being a bit picky here but historically bombers could release all in one go or have a timed release between bombs to cover a wider area, this applies, equally, to planes that carried their loads internally in vertical racks, thinking B17 but reckon B25 carried its internal load in a similar war. Would be an interesting (and I imagine a simple piece of game code) development to give the player the choice of bomb pattern?
