View Full Version : When is Lorient a valid 'home' base?

09-13-2008, 09:36 AM
It's 23rd July, 1940, and I'm in grid square BF74. Fuel is almost down to 50%, 4 bow torps left, five weeks at sea after leaving Wilhelmshaven (2nd Flotilla).

Lorient has turned 'blue' in the last few days but after my recent experience at Calais I don't trust that at all. A radio message came in that Lorient was available as a base but I don't trust that either as Doenitz doesn't like me (broken too many u-boats).

Currently sailing around in circles off NW Spain waiting for the 'Base has been changed to Lorient' message. As I'd rather not be 3/4 of the way back to Germany through the English Channel when I get that message, does anybody know when it's likely to happen?

It's a 'green' thing, I don't want to waste fuel! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Historically it should be the 25. June 1940 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thats when the german troops occupied the city and with it the port.

In the 2nd it is available as a uboat base from 1st September 1940. Just docked so will meet you for a beer at the Admiral Ben Bow. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ahh, that's the date is it? Handy to know for the future. I say 'future' as my skipper raced back through the Channel to Wilhelmshaven between July 27 - 30, reading every radio message that came in (normally he doesn't bother) and waiting for 'The Base was changed to..' before doing a hand-brake turn.

But of course it never came and BdU had the cheek to retire him after only six patrols! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

The Admiral Benbow you say? Sounds good but will have to get the train now! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I've got sort of a 'reverse' situation. In July or August '44 (grid ED91) I was informed that Lorient was no longer available as my home base. Being badly damaged and out of torpedoes I sailed generally northeast hoping to get the 'new base' message. Nothing happened. It seemed unreasonable to me that BDU would not notify me of a new home base. Finally, not wanting to risk sailing to just any 'blue' port I used the 'return to base' shorcut. I felt a little guilty about this 'cheat' but also felt somewhat justified in using it. The 'return to base' placed my new home base at Penang and I was assigned S.Aust. as a grid. A few days into this patrol Penang was removed as my home base, with Jakarta being assigned as my new one. The seas and sky look suspiciously empty down here and I am determined to bring my crew and my boat safely home...just a few more months....

I take it you are driving a IX/C40 or D2? When you return to Europe, my advice would be to go straight up the middle of the Atlantic, staying as far from land as you can, and head for Norway via the West & North coasts of Iceland (The Denmark Strait). That way you have a reasonable chance of getting back in one piece. Good luck!

KH, assuming you're playing GWX, here's the dates for every flotilla, base and U-boat class as listed in the GWX2.1 manual:

@KH and all,
Yes, I'm driving a 1XD2. Last time I made it this far into the game I was on the surface at night, got the dreaded 'Aircraft spotted', crash-dived and...career ended. Rather dis-heartening. This time I am being very careful. I'm finding this 'end game' aspect very interesting. Do I take risks and go for tonnage even while getting all the reports of other boats lost or do I admit the war is over and try to bring my young men home to their families?

By the way, did BDU really send all those 'boat lost' messages? Certainly it would have been vital knowledge knowing that the allies were sinking boats in large numbers but it also would have been deeply demoralizing.

Thanks for that VG! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif I've read through most of the GWX manual but didn't spot that bit.

@ Dinish,

With you driving a boat the size of warehouse, I would suggest that just getting home in one piece is going to be a big enough challenge in itself. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Go after any single merchants you come across, but only under the right circumstances (like a good probability of a submerged torpedo attack). You're a very big target even for their lousy shooting, so avoid gun actions. Avoid escorted convoys at all costs. Remember the Atlantic is crawling with escort carrier task forces from mid-44 onwards. Maybe try running with decks awash if you can afford the fuel penalty. It will speed-up your dive time.

Try reversing your tactics: stay surfaced during the day to give your watch crew better vision and submerge at night. As for the radio messages I think they were received directly from the boats that were under attack, such as 'U-444, Aircraft, Bombs, Sinking..' Read Herbert Werner's 'Iron Coffins'. The last few patrols he made at the end of the war were full of these messages.

The war is lost, Herr Kaleun. Your men want to live! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif As you are returning from the Far East, you are probably carrying vital cargo. Good luck, and let us know if you make it back!

@ KH

thanks for the tips. I'll post progress reports.
