View Full Version : Like to start flying

Hi, I'm currently flying on AcesHigh2 which has undergone changes I really don't care for. I wanted to try something else and this looks cool. How should I go about starting? Do I need 1946? I really would just like to download the program needed, the games are not available where I live. Don't like the wait If I ordered by mail. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif Anyway, I would like to get in a squad when I get the basics down. Being in one on Aces made the game twice as fun. Any help is appriciated. Thanks, otter

In a way I'm envious. You can get everything in one easy package, 1946, right off the bat. You won't regret it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The 1946 complete game is just out, and can be ordered. Of you don't like the wait, I think earlier versions of the game can be bought and downloaded via internet. The older version will give you a hint of how the game handles.

Flying in a squadron is a lot of fun. When you have the game, check the squadron???s forum.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Both server and clients must have same version of the game. Great majority of ppl and consequently nearly all the servers will soon have 4.07, so with any older version you will not have much choice (if any) online.

Ah, and btw, wellcome aboard! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Your best bet is to grab '46 because it literally comes with everything ever released for this series. If you do decide to go online (I strongly recommend that you stay offline and practice for a little while) you'll want to get this version otherwise you will not be compatible. I expect most servers will make the switch over the next couple of months from 4.04/4.05 to 4.07.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Find my missions at Flying Legends (http://www.flying-legends.net/php/downloads/downloads.php?cat_id=19) and Mission4Today.com (http://www.mission4today.com).

It's dead easy to make a '46 installation "backward compatible" with older versions, so definitely get that one. It opens up all options for you.

It's impossible to "forward compatible" older versions without buying the new one!

It's great seeing new faces here, welcome.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Bummer, I'm in the States and 1946 won't be released here. Also any IL2 product not specifically made for release in the US is not compatible with any other release. Ug. Can't find a download anywhere so far...they do have forgotten battles and pacific fighters I can get, but if the online community doesn't fly those, it wouldnt be worth it for me. otter

As has been stated, GoGamer offers the 1946 version for mail order in the US. If you get any other version and you will be locked out of the vast majority of online servers very soon.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Many thanks! I am going over to the site now, and getting a copy. When it gets here and loaded, I will most likely keep my reputation for crashing into trees. (Many plane eating trees in AcesHigh) :P Otter

wait till you see the dreaded "oleg" trees http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

I'm curious, what were some of the changes you didn't like at Aces High? I was thinking about trying it out...

Olag trees? Been flying a year and never met a tree that didn't want to hug me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

AcesHigh is not bad at all, don't get me wrong. But they had a main arena, training, special ops and head to head, but they changed that. They kept all the ones except the main, which is now broken into four arenas. Late war, middle, early, start something like that. Everyone hangs out in the late war till it fills up, then spills over to the level behind - It would be cool but you see 250 people in the late and you can't get in. If your squad is in there your flying solo till some people log out. Say you like the early war arena but you go to it and 6 people are in there, but 6 planes does not make a very big furball. It's hard to find someone, unless you prearrange the meeting. (If you move around that is). The game itself is really pretty sweet and most of the people there are fun flying with, but I just lost something for it after the change. Really can't explain that very well. Soooooo now it's TREES IN THE STORMOVIK! Yay!! Otter >>>> Thanks for the welcome! <SALUTE>

Save your dough, Get 46. No need to purchase anything else since it is now available and sooner rather than later everyone will be on 46.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

<span class="ev_code_white">Oleg: I think players should upgrade their PC after the release of Storm of War: The Battle of Britain, but not now. Minimum system would be probably like last year good system for IL-2 series. The simulation has gone from what was to be a study sim involving one aircraft to a real monster anthology of WWII aviation. The engine has been stretched to fit multi-engined bombers, aircraft that are linked (such as the Mistel and the TB-3/I-16 combinations), aircraft carriers, runway cratering, working searchlights, etc.

Thanks for the info Otter. I was wondering if it was because of the FM or DM, but from your answer above I gather it is more an organizational thing. As you become more experienced with IL2 it would be interesting to hear your perspective on both, kind of a pros and cons thing.
